It must have been a very brazen crime. The kidnapper couldn't have know the woman would arrive at the supermarket. He or she must have been there, saw the woman park her car, go over to the car and remove the child without her screaming, all within 5 minutes. Then what happened? It's all very mysterious.

Despite what some of you think, the mother is not guilty of any crime in this case, based on what information we have in the story. My sympathy is with her. She had a lapse in judgement and is probably horror-stricken right now , waiting for news.

As an Aussie, I miss Cherry Ripes, lamingtons, vanilla slices, Cadbury Coconut Rough, Snakes Alive, Twisties and corn meat. Oh, and Easter eggs, too.
Everytime I go home for a visit and go into a Coles store, I am agog at all the grocery items which are normal there, but some of which are sold as luxury items in Japan.

I agree. I think convenience stores are one of the best things about Japan. I think having a landline phone ready to use in an emergency is a good idea. I used my own landline at home more than my cell phone in the aftermath of the quake.

The crowd was certainly on Japan's side. I think the French finally figured out to play to the Japanese players (who can't tackle away from the ruck) and not the "foreign" Japanese. I still think that rule is stupid - allowing foreigners to play for a national team if they have lived in the country for 3 years. It should be based on citizenship.
Incidentally, there seem to be some unusual colors for jerseys at this World Cup. Since when does France wear all white?

I don't think the prefecture has enough storage space. There is nowhere to put millions of tons of debris, soil, wrecked cars, etc. This is why nuclear crisis minister Hosono made that controversial suggestion the other day about calling on all prefectures to do their bit and help with waste disposal. I think they will probably end up dumping a lot of waste at deep sea.

Books have been written about this subject. Commercials are a window into a society and its culture. I quite like Japanese ads. Often you don't know what product or service is being advertised until the very end. Another difference I notice is that the price of the item is seldom included.
My friends at advertising agencies tell me that Japanese commercials regularly win awards at international ad events. I can believe it.
My all-time favorite is the Coca-Cola ad from the mid-1990s. Elton John is playing the piano at a party and snippets of old films featuring Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Louis Armstrong are cleverly inserted.

The saddest thing for me is that even his mother couldn't talk him out of it. But we don't know what their relationship was like. Maybe he had been trying to tell her about his bullying problem for months and felt she wasn't listening or didn't care.
I can understand why the board would launch an investigation. Who knows what the "bullying" and "malicious gossip" consisted of? I doubt if any f the kids doing the bullying will admit to anything.
Kids can be so cruel at that age.

My girlfriend does this all the time. Each time a course comes out, she snaps a picture. She also puts updates on our meal on Twitter for her friends. "I'm having roast pork now."

I don't understand what birthday surprise the wife had in mind. Was she just going to take her husband for a walk on the beach at night and then say, "Happy birthday darling. Here's your present. A hole in the beach."

I've never understood the appeal of movie dates. When I go out with a woman for the first time, I want to start getting to know her immediately instead of having to wait until after the movie. I find that the conversation after a movie - exchanging opinions on the movie - tends to be fake, not even a good ice-breaker. I wouldn't go to see a movie with a date until we were well along into our relationship. Then it becomes a pleasant way to spend time together.

It's a difficult choice. While the immediate need is for reconstruction, I think raising taxes now would be devastating for the economy. People need to spend money. If there is a tax hike, we have less disposable income and we don't spend. This leads to a deflationary spiral and everybody loses.
Posted in: Politicians in Japan are divided over whether to hike taxes to finance reconstruction efforts or take steps first to spur economic growth and then use that as an engine for reconstruction. What is your view?

Whatever happened in that hotel room, Strauss-Kahn is still a slimeball, in my opinion. He's a married man, so he has no business even trying to have sex with the hotel maid.

I don't see how any national team can be allowed to have 10 foreign imports. If they all play in any one game, there'll only be five Japanese on the field.
