Isn't the Niigata plant the other plant they lied about and got embroiled in a big scandal? If memory serves, they knowingly put the plant directly above a MAJOR fault line but later claimed they had no idea, despite having the maps to prove it was there, that it was so serious.

Nationalize this company NOW and put its current execs in prison, as well as its former execs. Ah, but this is Japan. Moushiwake nai.

    '“Gorimacho Gundan” (Macho Gorilla Gang)'

With a name like that they deserve a beat down. Morons. Sadly, as they are underage, nothing will happen except a sigh and a 'shouganai'.

You gotta love how these guys get rotated into apologist positions. I'm sure Okada's pretty happy his first major duty in his new appointment is to apologize, yet again, for government mistakes.

Anyway, I'm with samwatters: apology NOT accepted. And thinking a "moushiwake arimasen" is going to make up for lies and corruption is absolute BS.

Sweet lord... are these people all morons? I mean, I suppose you can pay slightly more attention to the road while breastfeeding than if you were using a cell-phone for gaming or emailing, but still.

hoserfella: "all in all, I'd say 53 injuries in a city of 14 million is pretty good."

True, but you have to reckon that a whole lot more accidents than this happened. I mean, who takes the time to go to the police and fill out a statement that you slipped on an icy sidewalk? Unless they were all traffic accidents I don't know how they came by this number.

"Despite some of the macho posturing here (amateurs?), I wonder how many injuries there'd be in less populated Toronto, Montreal, Chicago etc. after a storm. Probably the same."

Maybe, maybe not, but like I said it would go unreported. And anyway, it wouldn't be the same number, in all likelihood, because as I also said people in nations where snow/ice storms occur frequently are usually better equipped to walk in such weather -- be it physically or mentally. That isn't a diss at all to Japan, or praise of people in relatively snowier nations, it's just a fact, same as how a Japanese family might be a whole lot more equipped to deal with an earthquake or typhoon than people in a nation or location where they rarely occur.

" Newt Gingrich called rival Mitt Romney a "terrible historian" but flubbed his own history in Congress on Monday night when he claimed the nation ran four consecutive budget surpluses during his time as House speaker. Romney attacked Gingrich's financial links to Freddie Mac while ignoring his own."

Surprise, surprise! And some clowns in the US want these morons for president!

For Japan to truly experience a 'rebirth' all of these old codgers in politics would have to go, period. Until then it's just a 'rebirth' of the same old crap.

Let me guess... it was 100% about what the opponent canNOT do and 0% about what they themselves could do to improve the nation. The circus goes on.

It's amazing how ill-equipped people here are in dealing with walking on snow and ice. You shift your center of gravity so that you're not putting your entire weight on the next step, simple as that. Of course, wearing high-heels or inappropriate footwear doesn't help, and needless to say riding a motorcycle, bike, and even driving is dangerous in freezing rain.

So more money that could go towards actual reconstruction in Tohoku will be wasted under the guise of representing recovery? Great!! And how many people 'nationwide' were polled? and were they told how much it would cost them?

Wow... countries heavily dependent on Iranian oil banning it for moral reasons while Japan flip-flops on banning based solely on profit with no morals whatsoever!

This is going to have Japan going 180 on it's last 180.

No kidding, eh? Imagine the company bothered to check after the area they took the rubble from was deemed unsafe! But did they? no. Why should they? It's easier and cheaper to cover up -- errr... not predict -- than it would be to take people's health into consideration. It's a shame you do not.

Why do they bother calling it a 'proposal' when the government has already decided it's a done deal? It reminds me of when they decide to build a new expressway and/or public works project, make a presentation, then ask about public approval but build it anyway when 90% are against it.

I don't know that many Japanese would appreciate you claiming that ignorance is a Japanese cultural norm.

j4p4nFTW: "Given what "gaijins" (your word) have done to Europe, I think it's pretty clear the results of that would be disastrous."

The difference is that when Japan falls, and it will within a decade, it will not recover for a long, long time, but Europe will. And there are plenty of nations besides those in Europe.
