Kudos to the guy for speaking out. It's not an easy thing to do, especially in this nation where you CONSTANTLY hear about people being attacked and often murdered for admonishing people that are doing wrong. As for this TEPCO worker, I say send him to the 'stricken' Fukushima plant for cleanup duty.

I agree with those polled that wasteful spending should be cut before any tax increase, but this government has already made it clear that they are unwilling to live up to that promise.

Serrano: "Question: What has Obama done to create jobs other than extend the Bush tax cuts?"

Actually, what you should realize is that any failure of Obama is due to extension of george bush's time in office -- ie. the debt skyrocketed due to bush and Obama could do nothing against it that the GOP would not say 'no' to. What's more, thanks to Obama, last month's jobless rate was the lowest it's been in... wait for it... a long time (including towards the end of bush's second term!

Mittens? He's proven indeed to be a job destroyer, not to mention destroying a lot of his personal records from when he was in office as Governor.

Patrick: "Japan will not get its so-called Northern Territories back for a very long time, if ever."

And for good reason... they are NOT Japanese -- they are Russian. Russia even attempted to throw Japan a 'pity-contract' to resolve the issue and give them two Russian islands but Japan objected the lost all four. A Japanese minister, who of course according to Japanese political policy got sacked two months later, actually suggested they take up the offer is not the ridicule of the ridiculed Japanese 'talento' turned politicians

At the very least, Patrick, they'll continue to object to Chinese boats while importing NK and Russian crab for expensive 'day trips', so as long as your average Japanese remain idiots, let them order what they hope to some day receive (not of their own will, of course!).

There will be no more point and click cameras within a decade, I figure. SLR's will continue, but only to cater to enthusiasts that don't mind shelling out heaps.

GW: "smartphone cameras are fine for small pics on yr computer but the sensors are way too small to compete even with smaller cameras, they wont be able to make decent prints bigger than a post card"

Not true... point-and-click cameras are in the throes of death thanks to improved cell-phone cams, which are VERY high quality these days. They'll never replace SLRs, to be sure, but on a large scale companies are smart to start trying to appeal to cell phone consumers as opposed to SLR specialities.

Next you'll see Azuma trying to go to Dokdo. Anything to try and lessen the embarrassment of reneging on the Iran oil thing.

Not surprised he didn't have the gall to set foot on the Kuriles... given that they are Russian. But hey... Gemba... given your idiocy over the oil issue in Iran, why not try to deflect by appealing to ultra-nationalists who know no better than to get upset over wrongful claims? What a stupid moron.

Good thing GWB decided the "war on terror" deemed all this necessary. Saddam is starting to look like he was mighty stable. Next Karzai is going to start crying again in Afghanistan.

suzukakid: "I hope his son, daughter-in-law, and whole family were and are embarrassed. His actions shouldn't ever be forgotten nor forgiven."

Really? I hope they disown him and rise above any potential embarrassment. If they allow the embarrassment they justify the moron's actions. I hope what they do is vow never to see the man again, and even better would be to legally disown him. I don't see why the son/daughter-in-law should suffer the sins of the father. I hope then in turn that the wife takes second look at the lout and criminal she decided to marry, and perhaps choose the option of taking half his salary and leaving him. It'll be a hard learned lesson, would that he learned, but I have my doubts he will learn anything at all but instead will proclaim himself the victim.

Rotating chairs again: Foreign minister - deputy premier; unknown - defense minister. And wasn't someone just saying earlier today that the new cabinet was designed to get rid of Ozawa? How so if Tanaka was put in as a sop to balance party unity?

"But he remains an unknown quantity for many in defense and national security circles."

And probably has zero qualifications to boot; at least that's usually the way it works. Anyway, if he gets canned within a few months he can seek to be appointed for foreign affairs, then science minister, then education... spin spin spin.

If all that is told in the story is true to a T, then it sounds like tragically bad timing.

I'm glad he was tried and 'punished' over there and not here -- I'm not at all sure he would have gotten the same punishment, let alone even tried. Hope his son and daughter-in-law didn't suffer too much embarrassment due to this old oyaji.

Cleo: "Maybe a bit of heightened awareness will encourage people to be a bit more careful about handwashing, etc., so that fewer people get it?"

True, you could call it an indirect public service announcement, but in that case I think an actual public service announcement might suffice. :)

I can't believe how much the Euro has fallen in such a short time. The outlook is not good at all. Depressing, really.

So until now the choices had not been optimal? What does that say about his decision making, and how do we know this is not just further lip-service? No doubt the next cabinet shuffle will be 'the best' as well.

So do a lot of people. What of it? I wonder if the young lady would appreciate us all knowing about her bodily excretions and what not. Anyway, hope she, like anyone else who is sick, gets well soon.

NetNinja: "This is a country that touts it's longevity. They live longer here than anywhere else in the world."

Don't state this in the present tense as though it's an unchanging fact. Most centenarians have seen their children buried, and some, and they are quite sad stories, have seen their grandchildren die of diseases that did not EVER exist in their family history (namely diabetes and heart/liver disease). The people who make up Japanese long lifespan average now will die out in the next couple of decades, and Japan will drop to a level that is on par with most Western nations, if not lower (given suicides and what not). Diet, stress, dissatisfaction.... things here are not at all the same as they were when the current centenarians were in their prime and critical years.

As for this guy dropping of a heart attack suddenly... again, for those who say it was natural I ask is it natural for four people to die suddenly at a workplace within a year? Worse yet where on earth is it normal to allow all these deaths to pass by so quietly based on the words of a company who CLEARLY has its own best interests at heart in relation to said deaths? Sure, if someone keels over suddenly you might not think much of it... but if four people keel over and die working at an asbestos cleaning site (for example) within a few months you can bet there are going to be questions, and rightly so. And what do you think others would say when the asbestos or construction companies suddenly say: "(s)he died of respiratory complications that preceded the asbestos cleaning"?

smartacus: Yup... heaven forbid anyone question the quality of the police force when they need 400 police in a small area to catch one Chinese guy.

"Nearly 800 officers had been assigned to the hunt for Li,"

Oops! My bad. It wasn't 400, it was 800! What was that you were saying about criticizing the police here? The big question is, did they try to somehow call him in advance to say they were looking for him and hoped for his understanding. :)

"NHK reported that there were many people on the street at the time of Li’s capture and that they all started clapping and cheering."

Were they clapping his capture or the man's mighty thirst for a sip o' beer? Seems if there were so many people that were watching the guy they might have done a little more to assist? How many were PTA with the 'on patrol' signs they forget to take of up to a decade after their kids' graduation?
