Wake up Jesper Koll the Japanese bubble came because the West wanted a capitaiist show place in Asia. Western countries bought any rubbish that Japan was producing to show that capitalism worked and communism did not. It was a controlled ecommony both internally and externally with a high level of protectionism. Japanese were encouraged by every form of media to buy only Japanese made goods and Western countries politicaly accepted unbalanced trade to protect their capitalist show case. The bubble did not come from a "free market" it was far more controlled than the other "Asian Tigers" which also had controlled economies.
Free markets with no control have aways collapsed right throughout history, "free markets" just don't work. The financial collapse through the use of neo-conservative idealogy had to happen, as infrastructure the wealth creating machine of nations is starved of money by low asset high return ventures. These higher risk, low asset ventures attract money from the lower return of asset hungry infrastructure in turn creating high debt levels and a bubble economy, as investers pay stupid prices for over valued shares with low asset values. Without a controlled economy the smaller bubbles burst regularly which is why we have a "business cycle" until control is removed altogether and we have a deppression. Japan had a soft landing because of government controlls and a culture that teaches frugalism the economy did not suffer from those controls as you suggest. Look to who caused the financial mess and it should be obvious their system did not work as well as the Japanese one.
Quote "For an economist this is simply a normalization of spending patterns. In the real world, it is a deep recession." This from an economist is the same as saying "We don't understand how economies work, we just follow the neo conservative bible and every thing should work out in the end and we will make a fast buck"

Scrote has a point "Copy Write" is being abused. The original "Copy Write" recognised that nothing is actually new but evolved from past work. It gave interlectual rights of recognition, to those who used past work to create newly defined knowledge from it and allowed makers of an inovated product time to market that product and recoup their investment in it. Now every company tries to claim "Copy Write" on every thing they produce even when their products are just copies of old stuff already forgotten in the public domain. "Copy Write" should return to its origins and only allow companies time to recoup investment and have a marketing edge for a short time and not allow them to claim existing knowledge which is always present as their property. As for Music and Art; music and lyrics have always existed each time you play or sing, some one has played or sang part of the tune or lyrics before you did. Just because you don't know what part you are repeating does not justify you claiming it as your personal property.

Why retrain workers when there is going to be no jobs for them? Motor industry crashes so does many other sectors. Why support industries that have not prepared for bad times? These industries will crash any way without inovated management and it is obvious their managements are not inovated or they would not be in the mess their are to start with. Start asking questions and define problems before trying to answer them or you just waste time and resources which is what the U.S. is doing now.

The hardest thing for non-smokers in Japan is to find some where to enjoy a meal. Japanese food may be good but not when eaten in a fog of tobacco smoke. Some places are providing smoking rooms but every time the door opens the stink spreads around the place putting non-smokers off eating. I asked for non-smoking in one restaurant and was led to a table with a big non-smoking sign, however on the next table less than a meter away 4 people were smoking and the smoke was drifting over the non-smoking table. After a few words and the offer of another table a little less smoky we walked out. The concept of non-smoking in Japan is just plain stupid, with many places just putting shoulder high partitions up to separate smokers and non-smokers. They don't seem to understand the problem is the smoke pollution, not the people. Even McDonalds have huge gaps around the top of their smoking rooms that let smoke out into the rest of the restaurant. The truth is for non-smokers Japan stinks and the wonderful people and scenery do not compensate for trying to find some where to enjoy a meal. Japan needs to adopt a non-smoking policy in restaurants to attract tourists.

What Beaches? do you mean the bits of sand between the boat ramps? The Japanese should stick to the "if you don't like Japan the way it is, don't come" approach. Why try to change Japan to Butlins holiday camp or the Gold Coast it will just attract the idiots and cost Japan more in the long run. If you want to go camping in the mountains there is nothing stopping you accept a few bears and 6 meters of snow in winter, no one else bothers you which is great, not like in some other countries where you can't find enough room to put your tent pegs in.

Why would Yoshio Sasajima,an economist at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, be shocked by the widening gap between the rich and the poor? He is an economist at a university that teaches neo-conservatism like most other universities around the the world. Meiji Gakuin University has even produce Finance Ministers and other high officials for the Japanese government. So must share some responsibility for the wealth gap or does this mean universities don't think about the problems their graduates are going to cause. I'm just a dummy with degrees in history and politics with a minor in psychology and I am amazed at how many university trained neo-conservative politicians are in "socialists parties" and don't understand that their concepts are neo-conservative. If an economist is shocked by the wealth gap it leaves little hope for the Japanese economy.

McCains done it again, now my network will be swamped by student downloading funny Hitler tapes with McCain and Obama swapping heads with Hitler. Every time McCain starts scare mongering it back fires on him, does the guy ever learn. Every body with half a brain has some criticism of Israel, like every other state they are far from perfect. If the tape was that bad the Los Angeles Times would have blow Obama out of the water to sell more print. It is obvious McCain has fallen for the 3 shell trick again they will let him shout then release the the tape which has nothing bad in it.

True ignor the credit crisis and this is a plus for the environment. All the factories and power stations would close down. China, India would revert like the rest of the world to fuedal economies and we could all have twits like Charlie boy trying to enslave us again.
He even got converting his cars wrong, a true environmentalist would have crushed fuel burning monsters like St George did to the dragons.

Some of the gas fields are not that stable and that is another reason they were not tapped a long time ago. Like this one the Aussies started in Indonesia and is still pouring mud out. Japan should look after its pensioners and get its own books right first. The share market was a Bear market, every one was getting savaged. Now it is a Panda market as well, any one jumping in is going to get a few Black eyes every time oil prices creep up. Japan better start thinking about winter oil prices before throwing money into the garbage can because a lot of Japanese may need help this winter. Fools jump in where Angels fear to tread.

Oil prices rising activated reccessions waiting to happen, when the markets crashed, oil prices went down as well. Nothing has been done yet to stop them rising again and when they do things will get worse. We could not afford high prices before the markets crashed and can certainly not afford them now. The biggest oil comsumers are now facing winter the speculators need to be taken out of the equation before winter demands send prices up or deppression is a sure thing. The Sky Falling In was not caused by fear but by the roof supports being kicked away by speculators.

GDP includes infrasture work in progress all the work that is going towards exports but not costed as exports just because exports only show as a small percentage of GDP is meaningless. Where Japan has dudded its self is in sending work off shore for cheap labour and letting its local economies die. What to look at is how many jobs will be hit by reccession directly and indirectly through loosing export markets and the effect that has on consumer confidence. Japan is now lucky that its population growth is low and the older generation has stuffed lots of money into their bank accounts at low interest rates making the banks rich. Japan is like all the other counries that embraced globalization, the government lost control of their economy through exchanging a strong local economy for quick profits through cheap labour.
