Good to see people not defending these journalists too much. They did enter the country illegally, a country which they know is very strict against people entering, and especially at a time like this. Did they think that nothing would really happen and because they are journalists they would be allowed to go wherever they want?

The cities are clean in Japan, but out in some of the smaller towns and villages, and even in ther countryside it can get bad. Someone has already mentioned the beaches, which are often full of Orion or Kirin beer cans in Okinawa, thrown in by fishermen.

smithinjapan - your comment about the Olympics is very valid, and I remember some of the comments about the Olympics not being important because star players weren't available. That will always be the excuse from some supporters of teams that lose or fail to perform to expectations in a tournament.

I think the fanbase generally considers the WBC as an international exhibition leading up to the start of the MLB season. It's similar to the way the World Club Champioship in rugby league is seen as a precursor to the NRL season in Australia.
