Blair Herron - Why shouldn't they mention anything about "dowa" in the article? Surely if it's related to him winning the election then it's something that should be mentioned in the story. As long as it's legal to do so, the role of news outlets should be to report the news; not choose what news might be touchy for people and omit it.

    Just my thoughts anyway.

TorafusuTorasan - I doubt the BBC would make up quotes. Sometimes the editorials can get a little skewed by personal opinions but the stories like this, and especially quotations, are usually on point. Am assuming the red light districts are going to compete against the masses of hostess bars in Osaka. I swear if the rest of the Japanese economy falls on its face, it will be propped up by Osaka's hairspray sales!

Interesting how media can shape people's views on this. Japan Today gives the headline you see above; the BBC announces that, "'Gangster son' wins Osaka ballot"

What happened to this guy under the UCMJ? Also, do these new rules mean that Japanese courts can impose their own sentencing on someone who has already been tried under the UCMJ? Or will it mean the US military would have to relinquish their right to try that individual if the Japanese courts do?

If it's the former then isn't it similar to double jeopardy?

Who knew?! If only we'd known that a quick hosing down could stop radiation from being harmful then all those people in Chernobyl could have been saved! I hope the government is strongly telling them that this will do virtually nothing to stop radiation

Not heard much from DPRK recently. They're just making a bit of noise to let everyone know they're still around.

In the same way, would you class 2nd or 3rd generation Japanese people who might look completely foreign (non-Japanese) as not being Asian or Japanese? Looks can be deceiving, you know.

NetNinja - If that system you mentioned is so good then you can imagine it will get adopted as a rule for any car sold in Europe. If that is the case then Japanese manufacturers will be forced to use it, even if only in the vehicles made for foreign markets. If they implemented the system in Japan you'd still have the task of getting people to believe that they should strap their kids in.

Didn't the UK have a similar problem with seatbelts (or was it drink driving) in the late 80s? People weren't paying attention to the normal ad campaigns so they had a 6-month hard hitting campaign showing footage from actual crashes on TV and shocking people to watch and take note. Result was a huge decrease in the offences (from what I can remember). Japan needs the same IMO. Instead they have a campaign with a cute girl in her late teens in a fisting pose with "whatever it is... DAME!" on the poster and a cuddly mascot and think it's going to change how people think.

Passing all these extra budgets is great, but I think people are also curious to know what the Red Cross money and money from other aid agencies that was given to the local governments has been spent on.

pawatan - True. Apple are not really that original, but they market themselves very well to make people think what they are doing are original, and have been successful doing that. Prime example would be the iPod. Plenty of MP3 players around before it, but they managed to get people to believe an MP3 player had never existed before they had released one.

Google Music is shaping up pretty well on Android. Been using it with a VPN here in Japan for a while.

Think one of the reasons is that there is no punishment at all for children who misbehave badly/repeatedly in schools. They go to the staffroom, kneel on the floor while a teacher berates them and pretend to listen, do a bow at the end, and then are left to go back to class, where they instantly forget what they were being told and do exactly the same offence the next day. After a while some teachers regard the kids as a "lost cause" and so don't even punish them, so they feel they can do anything as it doesn't matter.
