Pretty poor translation of the title given the tome of the book, don't you think?

I agree, the train riding porn reader's conscience is certainly dormant. Mine isn't, and if that's a hang up, then long may I dangle!

In relation to the subject matter of this book, a friend visiting Japan asked an associate why there was so much pornography readily available and read so openly on trains. "This country is full of wkers, I guess." was his reply. I see no reason to dispute this, frkly.

    Rurika,

I find this article rather naive and ill-informed.

Are you not perhaps a little naive yourself? Granted that some pedophiles may have been victims themselves, but if you're looking for a way to break the cycle, then we need to break the criminals. Having been abused yourself may be a reason for your evil, but never an excuse. Counselling is a soft option. We must put these "unfortunates" in gaol where they can do no harm to the innocent. We should keep them there indefinately (Would you raise your hand to have a single one released?). Can you think of a more effective way short of execution or something equally barbaric that would be as sure of breaking the cycle to which yo refer?

It is ironic that as hardcore as he is, he would be posing with a Japanese peace sign.

Hardcore??? With a pout and a bent kneee like that it seems that YOSHIKI (not Yoshiki, by the way) is available for a different kind of hardcore to the type you're thinking of, hugs and kisses.

    questions over media freedom remain.

Questions? There's no question that freedom of the press does not exist and frankly, should not exist. Not if the regime there wants to stay in power.

What could be better than a smiling face greeting you at the door?

An terse NHK guy saying that they've made a mistake and thrusting a refund cheque into your hand.

As a Christian, I have no choice to be pro-life in all respects, but I sometimes can't help wishing that someone would "recognise" Mugabe through a telescopic sight.

A fellow teacher at the Nova branch I used to work at once came down from our conversation lounge to tell us that a student had just confidently announced that Japan could never be invaded. This was because Japanese air was different to air in other countries and as a result, the parachutes of the invading country wouldn't function. I see evidence of the same mentality in operation here and suspect arguments could run something like "Yes, China has soy sauce, but it's different to Japanese sauce because the air around the beans is different!"

And people complain about the "corrupt" Japanese political system and society in general? Shoot nothing beats Zimbabwe at the moment.

Hear, hear. Except the Japanese government isn't "corrupt", it's corrupt, but angelic in comparison to a host of other "governments" like Mugabe's.

    rjd_jr,

my bet is that most here will reply to the last paragraph, lol.

I admit that it was tempting, but I've got to say that one of the real insiders, the old bloke who said he was just happy to have someone care for him regardless of nationality is probably voicing the opinion of most people. As you said, lots of positives in this article, and I for one am not going to let a couple of dodgy quotes about singing ability and hikkikomori having jobs stolen from them spoil it!

    knucklerap,

It seems that young women are growing up much faster these days. Isn't the onset of first menses about 1-2 years sooner than, say, 30-40 years ago? It's still a shocking crime, but not as shocking as it used to be, I'd say.

Yes, you'd say that. And you'd be wrong.
