I once got on a subway in Osaka, sat down and the guy opposite me had his Mr Johnny out standing at attention and he was milking the cow. I ran as fast as I could to the end of the train. The other passengers just sat there on the carriage and ignored it. Bizarre-o Japan-o.

I will give you some advice. Buy a pair of reflector mirror sun glasses. When someone looks at you stare at them. In Japan people think reflector glasses are only worn by Yakuza. Absolutely no-one will bother you or look at you when you wear them. I tested it out and it works like a charm every single time.

I have taught conversation English to over 20,000 Japanese over 8 years. About 4 years ago I decided to stop teaching English and teach people how to make friends using English.

I teach all the core principles of friendship including the following: 1. Encouragement. 2. Praise 3. Sympathy 4. Empathy 5. Interest 6. Inclusion 7. Acceptance 8. Approval 9. Appreciation 10. Respect 11. Understanding 12. Effort 13. Celebration etc

Unfortunately as a previous commentator posted friendship is not highly prioritized in Japan due to a large number of social reasons. Japan prioritizes work first, Italy prioritizes family, maybe some other countries prioritize self. Every culture is different.

What a Japanese person thinks is friendly someone from another country may find unfriendly.

What has happened today though is that all the people around the world are using English to make friendships with people from other cultures and there are now emerging common universal principles of friendship that will allow you to make friends with anyone from anywhere.

Unfortunately many aspects of Japanese culture are generally considered unfriendly by universal standards. If everyone does it then its not unfriendly. This is fine if all your freinds are from that same culture and think the same as you. But when you live in a multicultural city like Sydney fro example that has 200 different nationalities of people you cannot except everyone to accept your definitions of friendship. You must defer to the common principles.

Some examples of what I find unfriendly in Japan is: 1. Not praising but criticizing 2. Not showing interest in my life or culture, i.e. not asking me how my weekend was or anything about my country 3. Saying sorry instead of thank you 4. Not including you in what they do 5. Making no small talk 6. Never inviting you anywhere 7. Rarely discussing emotions 8. Constant use of emotional blackmail 9. Always agreeing 10. Criticizing you behind your back 11. Showing little sympathy 12. Showing little empathy 13. using stock phrases to communicate 14. going silent when they are upset 15. Avoiding any responsibility 16. Lack of genuine interest in what you do 17. Endless obligations and the avoidance of being obligated to you.

    Please comment everyone.

I did a lesson 2 months ago to about 40 elementary kids about things they like to eat. I asked the class who likes whale and 80% of the kids put their hand up. I asked who likes dolphin and none did. The teacher said Japanese don't eat Dolphin. I was surprised as I had just watched The Cove the night before. Japanese people don't know.

From my experience Japanese have conditional Take Take relationships based on obligations. Rather than unconditional Give Give relationships based on genuine sincerity, mutual respect, and enjoyment of each others company.

For example so many Japanese that I meet are excited and say, "Let's be friends; you can teach me English." It is like saying let's be friends because I want to use you for a free English lesson. It immediately turns me off. I am waiting for the day that a Japanese person says "Let's be friends, I will teach you Japanese, show you around and introduce you to all my friends and family". It will never happen in my lifetime.

In fact I am convinced that Japanese culture is fundamentally narcissistic. 1. The criticize and put each other down all the time 2. They show no interest in others 3. There is a fundamental lack of empathy and sympathy 4. There is an obsession with appearance, money and status 5. There is an underlying superiority complex masking deep insecurities. 6. They try and manipulate each other to do things using guilt, fear and obligations. ie Emotional Blackmail. 7. They can be dismissive of those they feel are inferior.

This is almost a classic definition of a Narcissistic Personality disorder.

Most of the comments here are intelligent and well-informed. BUT... I was shocked at BarakuminDes, saying, amongst other things: "These dolphins are being killed specifically for scientific research. At least 1000 of them per year must be killed to gain a representative sample - and they must not be killed quickly - but over a lengthy period by incompetent (elderly and possibly drunk(?)slaughtermen. The meat is an incidental by-product." And then he says that they "have to" eat dolphin meat, because they can't cultivate rice in Taiji...

love2allanimals - That poster is being sarcastic and comparing the Japanese attitude to whaling to illustrate how ridiculous it sounds in the context of dolphins.

Anyway, enough of all this empty rhetoric. Take em to court. Get a verdict. Enforce it. Move on everybody.

I am convinced the criticism of Japan is often racist or ideological in motivation.

No one is criticizing Japan. This statement is absurd.

They are criticizing the few people that hunt whales for profit in contravention of the Ban on Whaling and the politicians that protect them. If Japan wasn't selling the whale meat for profit then they probably wouldn't be criticized. A few selfish and greedy Japanese people are embarrassing an entire nation.

From my experience I have found Japan one of the most discriminatory countries on earth, they are "anti-cetaceanites". (p.s. I made that word up!!)
