Hey don't be so tough about the dog cosmetics thing - could just be lost in translation, especially since in English "cosmetics" is defined as any product to care or beautify the skin, scalp or hair. So could just be a nice doggy shampoo range.

Bush said that the spirited campaign between McCain and front-runner, Democratic Sen Barack Obama, reflects a political competition that is an “essential part of a healthy democracy.”

I see it as the unfortunate and embarrassing part of USA democracy, but OK

    ImperiumMondi -

i don't think that is what bush was saying.

Reading back, I suppose he didn't say it outright. But he did label it as "one of America’s greatest strengths.”

I am going to elaborate - off the racism comment. Still mystified how USA's election system is a "representative democracy". Only two people have a shot, those in States traditionally pro-Republican or pro-Democratic who want to vote the other way know their vote in hopeless and if you don't like either candidate, then you are really just out of luck. At least in my country, if you don't like the big guys, there are lots of little guys in there you can pick from AND it is almost guaranteed that some of the little guys will then get in to parliament and actually represent their voters. (case in point: Green party/Maori party). Granted, USA's system is nowhere near the worst hey it beats Zimbabwe's elections hands down - BUT it surely isn't a model the world should adopt.

With Iranian sensitivities in mind, the Iraqis also want an explicit ban on the U.S. using Iraqi territory to attack its neighbors — a demand that was reinforced by last Sunday’s U.S. raid against a suspected al-Qaida hideout in Syria.

I think this is only fair.

YangYong - in a country with the death penalty, letting them live is letting them off the hook. And its difficult in this case (no win situation) if they die, they become martyrs. If they live, they still have plenty of admirers. Scum.

I enjoyed this article and many of the comments (not all). Especially Jean Colmar's - some persuasive arguments for socialism (note: DIFFERENT to communism)

You know how they still publish the lyrics on the cover books for Japanese CDs - reading whilst listening, great way to learn Japanese/kanji. Although pity the lyrics are usually nothing special. So I can see why music might help. But I see him as more of a children's entertainer (Wiggles style) rather than an educator.

t's a five cent levy in Australia.

Disillusioned - not in NSW. I pay nada for bags. Also, they have made the supermarket bags thinner so, so now all they do is double bag.

I have some suggestions: drink tap water stop buying endless plastic bottles of water Never buy/order more food than you need or can eat - besides the food waste you throw away, there is whatever packaging etc that came in.

I think 'cool' should be banned from English conversations as an adjective for people. Everyone sounds about 9 years old and/or Japanese using that word.

I don't approve/agree of half the stuff Sugimoto says, but boy I wouldn't mind having those legs at 40.

    • Jacobson likens hostessing to teaching English: “Both jobs basically require one to act as both a cultural exhibition and an entertainer.”*

Hah - bet there's some English teachers out there taking offence to that comparison.

The Japanese ex-pats I know here who go to hostess bars - don't have sex. That's not the point of the hostess bar. They go to enjoy the fantasy that younger, pretty girls are interested in them. And as they point out, no girl at a free bar would deign to drink/chat with them. Some of the hostesses have then come along to watch their baseball games on the weekends- and the guys have declared "never paying to drink with them again" - I mean, who pays for something that comes free? But then again, the guys I know wouldnt touch a foreign hostess with a barge pole. Can't imagine a lot of stimulating conversation in that environment...

sad :( Imagine being that baby and hearing the tale of your coming to the world when you grow up - apart from no idea of who your father might be.
