I'm sorry, but anyone who compares themselves to a "soccer mum" is not winning my vote to becoming #2 leader of my country. Pity (or perhaps fortunately that it's not my country), I don't have a vote.

I own a DS portable. Yet every DS game sold here in Au is targeted at someone aged 6-9 years old...and I cannot see the value in adding camera capability

In my opinion, the difficulty of learning (and maintaining) Japanese to a certain level depends on what that level is and whether you are in an everyday environment or a learning environment to learn & maintain in. The upper intermediate-advanced style Japanese that I studied at University, just does not pop up in my every day life. Don't use it at home or at work, and no longer study/revise at school. So it just disappears. In contrast, my everyday Japanese and comprehension just gets better and better. I'd prefer a balance but not willing to study much more.
I've only every learnt one other language- Maori. Learnt it before Japanese and it made pronunciation a lot easier. But you can't compare learning a language which is largely static (and was never a written language) with one which continues to evolve...

Oh, I'm sorry - in my country, when someone screws up their job it is OK to criticise. If for example a policeman shot a totally innocent person - no, let's say, shot another policeman - then I would call them an idiot.
Well, when coming under fire I would prefer it if the fire was returned at the people who started it.

Speaking of world leaders and Palin... Australia's K Rudd PM appeared on a local comedian's show on Sunday where they grilled him about which potential US leader he preferred. He rightly stated that it was up to the USA people to choose their leader and he was looking forward to working with either of them. Then something about Palin came up...he literally grinned and said the cryptic "I like moose". Look, even other world leaders can't take her seriously!
But having read this article, I would be looking forward to her political debate....

'Friendly fire' - awful euphemistic word that should be banned. What a great way to get off-side with your allies, idiots!

It's funny - in a Western style article reporting these types of details, it would also state whether the girl appeared to have been sexually assaulted or not - I mean it can be pretty easy to work out for a 5 year old. Is it not standard to give that information to the press here?

The one in the middle has classic bow-legged stance - I HATE how they stand knock-kneed toes in. Looks like a jockey or the wicked witch of the West. My high school friends told me they stand like that to make the 'gap' between thighs look bigger (ie they think their legs look skinnier and longer....) I just think ick

Personally, being educated, I would prefer a leader with more education than myself. But there are a lot of voters out there with (a) less education than either Palin or McCain and (b) a complete disregard for the value of education to go with it. So unfortunately, I don't think the lack of study will affect a large proportion of voters :(

I thought this sort of thing started in the USA? Anyway, I don't necessarily disapprove - hell if my kid could make money/be successful at 6 why not - its not like a 6 year old has a busy life. What are you depriving them of, exactly? Less time in front of the TV becoming a fat blob, anyway.
I looked at the little girl's photos on that link, she is gonna have a massive eyebrow problem soon those things are like giant caterpillars! Also don't approve of colouring a 6 year old's hair, who needs regrowth at that age...

Haha maybe they could get a cheap and nasty tabloid show like "today tonight" on air which revels in bringing these controversies to light. Shame them into fixing it.

Hah - I'm not Australian either but I live there and maybe not trash on the beaches, but I have found syringes. You choose what is worse. That is really sad about the beaches in Japan. I lived for a year in Shimoda next to Kisami beach - never saw any trash at all although come summer the beach was packed. But maybe the local lifeguards did a clean up job along with saving lives?

I love how she was pestered about whether she was pregnant or not. So rude! Who care if she is knocked up, anyway? She's certainly old enough to have a kid.

This freaks me out - I shared the elevator at my apartment block yesterday with a seriously stressed British mother with 2 toddlers and a baby in a pram. She screamed at the boys twice and whacked one of them around the face - in front of me and in the short span of a lift ride. Maybe I should have made more an effort to work out where she was living. 'Cause this is something I can totally see her doing.

I think it's a nice form of respect. No reason why women's equality and men offering seats to the ladies can't both work together, the latter is just a politeness thing. Besides, I will offer my seat to an elderly person - there should be a pecking order for those seats.
