Haha - the biggest pot heads at my uni in NZ were Japanese students. Its not like they would just kick the habit after going back home. Still surprised this is such big news though

Blimmin fun police. I have coached gymnastics for 10 years and you would be amazed, about 90% of kids aged 5-8 have no idea how to do a cartwheel or a handstand. No wonder children are turning into fatties...

Hmm having re-read the start of the article I see that he is the 'first' Japanese Police Officer in NZ so I guess that might make it news? Although my friend is a cop and his mum is Japanese. Maybe the 'half-ness' of him means it doesnt count.

A mostly white police force? Wow someone has no idea of NZ - believe it or not, its police force (and most public service areas) have a pretty representative spread of ethnicitys. Especially in customs/immigration and the police force. I am not sure why this is even news - a PR in NZ has almost equivalent status to a citizen apart from the passport & reciprocal rights in Au/UK - they can vote, serve on jury, take out a student loan, study at domestic student fees...not sure why it is news that one is now a police officer?
There is a big Asia task force police based in Auckland - and a huge Asian population. For example, 75,000 Koreans or so living in Auckland which only has a population of a million. Increase in crimes targeting Asian residents stems a lot from Asian crime gangs too - like the group of Japanese students who bashed their slightly retarded Japanese class mate and ditched his dead body. And financial fraud etc. And plenty of overstayers! Makes sense to have native speakers with an understanding of the culture for these types of crimes, no?

Shame on Australian TV which showed the first two dives, skipped the rest to show only some of the final dives- hardly gives you an understanding of who was the best when you miss half the dives! OH well I guess they will show it about 15 times today so nothing will be missed...

I think a 'two seat' policy if someone can't fit in one seat is fair.

Of course the Olympics on their own will not bring about reform - could they act as a catalyst? Maybe but not likely

I thought the ceremony was great and I love seeing each team come through - the athletes were just glowing, weren't they? I think they need to limit the parade to athletes only though - would save time and no need for those coaches/officials really. Like some of the teams only had 3 athletes but still an entourage of 10-15 ppl. Thought some of the national uniforms were interesting - Japan's was nice and simple and NZs looked good too. Australia's was....ermm... no comment.

And as for theneworder and others reference to 'human rights' and Japan's lack thereof - depends whether you put priority over collective or individual human rights when assessing that. Eastern/Asian countries have typically emphasised collective rights over individual rights - it it one thing that distinguishes them from the West in a way. And I am not saying that one set of rights is more important than the other - for example some of the stupid rights the USA thinks are so important to protect - I could happily do without

Japan is not a part of the West. Not because of some of the stupid reasons written here, but more because of its historical background and how it has developed as a result.

Oh yeah, very fair - so even though 97% of viewers were from the traditional rugby nations, you want to go and put the World Cup in a random Asian country? Yes, this really shows that the IRB is 'undemocratic' and 'unrepresentative' by giving the World Cup to a country that lives for the game and hasn't hosted forever - besides the fact that its probably the biggest event NZ would be capable of hosting, given its size and infrastructure. Heck, the NZ PM went and begged for the World Cup, they deserved it. Playing the next RWC in Japan could give the game a boost like it did football (excuse me, 'soccer') - but there are a lot of differences between how popular football was in Japan/Asia before the World Cup ever came, the popularity of rugby in Asia - especially outside Japan.
