I don't think people's reactions to this should be cried down as mere 'political correctness' - it is unresponsible to make rash generalisations based on race in a national broadcast, I would think.

What is it with people who have to bag every little thing - he went to show his support OK, better than doing nothing - damned if you do and damned if you don't with J-T posters. I'm glad I don't have your obviously miserable lives where you have to moan about everything.

Westurn - I'm from New Zealand. And I do approve of most of my country's recent political and diplomatic decisions. Any problems with that?

Hmm I bet they put this unflattering pic up to draw rude comments about how ugly Western women are compared to Japanese women again. Should fire the photographer if this is the best snap he got.

It's not sexism, I hate it when (female) politicians bring this sort of argument into politics. Doesn't help the cause at all. The lastest news is that Belinda Neal keeps photos of her hated colleagues in the freezer- now that's funny! Much more catty/woman-like.

I don't dislike Americans per se. But I don't approve of their diplomacy overseas and US politics/election campaign antics have to be the biggest joke in the world (except maybe for Zimbabwe's, for different reasons). And I shudder when I see the average carbon footprint of an American citizen - this has got to be linked to the obesity rates in the USA too. And do you know? I have NEVER met an American citizen who has confessed to voting for Bush isn't that unusual? I presume all the voters live (and hardly ever leave) their country.

Water bottles are meant to deter dogs-doesn't work for cats. Although lemon does - for a science project I managed to extract the oils and make it sprayable

Romulus you poo-hoo the 'demeaning' use of a leash for a child - have you ever tried keeping track of (for example) a young but active autistic autistic child on a busy street, at a dangerous beach, anywhere? And don't answer 'don't take that child somewhere risky' because that is far more demeaning/damaging to a child. Sometimes safer is far better than sorry -and it can be harder than you might think to watch and protect kids every second. I feel sorry for your wife because it looks like a child guide was considered by her (probably for a reason)- sounds like you leave the child watching/rearing to her whilst judging everyone else for their poor parenting skills.

Matada - pretty much any Non-US media I follow is regularly anti-US military - maybe you don't read widely enough?
And Statistician - your comments about Blair are interesting, I think Howard's support of the US/Iraq war was certainly a factor in his losing last year's Australian election too (not to mention all the other 'factors'...)

Bovinus - are you kidding me? How long since you've been to Australia? I live there now (I'm Kiwi) and don't go a day without hearing a reference to "abbos" "lebs" "asians" - 'assuming' that everybody in Australia is Australian isn't of much value if you still go around distinguishing by racial groups.
In contrast to morikun, I would prefer a term such as 'gaijin' which lumps all foreigners into one group, rather than distinguishing on race etc (although as noted by some already, 'kokujin' is also in use and other Asians are normally distinguished as well....)

What a ridiculous question. It's no more 'racist' than any other word used to describe a particular group.

I hate it how JT posters always blame the parents/victims for these things. These kids could have been playing on the footpath outside their houses or walking down to the shop just on the corner for some lollies for all we know - I don't think it's that unreasonable/god awful for 5/6 years olds to be on the street in their neighbourhoods.

Ha... I know it's stereotypical, but I can't help but imagine all the male posters up there who are boasting about how unattractive/overweight/inferior Western women are - could never actually score a date with an attractive/intelligent/successful woman back home. Hence (a) why they love Japan and (b) the bitterness towards Western woman. As for me, I can't say I have ever met a foreign guy in Japan who I would even want to date. Slim pickings indeed... J guys all the way!
