". . . let the real leaders lead and let America be America."
When you say "real leaders", do you mean leaders like GW Bush & Dick Cheney?
Leaders like that are not part of the solution but a huge part of the sticky mess we're currently in.

Looking at what's happened and what the U.S. is doing is kind of like that song by the Talking Heads . . . "We're on the road to nowhere".
Anyway, Obama is between a rock and a hard place regarding the sticky mess he's inheritted. It's gonna take a long time to get out of this hole that's been dug for him & us, and to think of the Republicans taking the ball back is like giving the keys back to the arsonist responsible for the building he's burnt down.

They said, she said. It's all gonna boil down to who do you believe most and that's going to depend on the reputations of all involved. One woman having consensual sex with 3 men and then raising a stink by going public is odd, not proof, but unusual in itself. I also find it strange that he requested her to come to his apartment in order to discuss something, not to engage in sex with multiple partners. Anyway, the reputations of the 3 firemen and the single woman should be carefully investigated.

Quite clear to everybody that it's a power play. China wants in and wants to push Japan out of the way in this particular neck of the woods.

As allied POWs from the UK & the USA soon discovered, the Japanese soldiers considered surrender shameful. Thus, their cruel treatment of allied POWs and their willingness & desire to die rather than surrender is a documented historical fact.

I remember hearing a story about a man (early 1950s) who used to suddenly wake up in the middle of the night at a boys' univ. dormitory screaming "Kill them all! Kill them all!" This really startled the newcomers who would ask what's wrong with that guy, and the others would calmly reply, "Don't pay any attention to him. He was in a Japanese P.O.W. camp." And that was that. Everybody would show their respect and sympathy for the guy by giving him his space.
It's impossible to imagine what cruel conditions these unfortunate P.O.W.s had to endure.

It's amazing what a little group of 50 people can do to shape world opinion, isn't it? This wouldn't have even been considered newsworthy a few years ago, and now something as small as this has become a huge global event.

I believe the conspiracy theories and that it was actually ET and friends letting off steam during a gallactical romp through time and space.
But seriously, Al-Qaida had an ax to grind with the U.S. and GW Bush had an ax to grind with Iraq. The actions of these two nuts played off one another for the perfect storm, and Saddam was merely an unfortunate, yet intended, bystander who happened to be standing too close to the action. When you think about it, it's hard to believe the planet is still in one piece judging by all of the nut jobs who have been and continue to run our lives throughout the world.

Well, sex is their tool & trade, so it seems to make sense that they would want to band together and fight something which is regarded by many as a sexually transmitted disease.

Today I had a senior citizen stopping and going suddenly in front of me and I was wondering what was going on. He had one of those blue & white handicapped symbols on the back window, so I was patient. Upon closer inspection I could see the driver, an old guy, fiddling around with his cell phone while he was stopping and going. Unbelieveable! If it isn't bad enough that their own reaction times are impaired by age, they have the arrogance to do 2 things they can't do properly at the same time. People, and this isn't just for the seniors out there, stop your car off the road if you have the urge to fiddle around with your cell phone on the road!

Sad to say, but it wouldn't surprise me if the little girl committed suicide. TV being what it is today in Japan and bullying being what it is makes it all possible. In the area I live in here in Japan, there have been several strange incidents of murder and suicide involving teens and pre-teens, and, for the most part, bullying has been a factor.

Perhaps Obama could pay official visits and attend peace ceremonies in Hiroshima, Nagasaki AND Nanking, provided that the Japanese PM joins him the whole way. That would cause more than a few heads turn.
Just curious, but has a sitting Japanese PM ever attended any special ceremonies in Nanking out of respect for the 300,000 civilians who were murdered there during WWII?

This issue is rather strange to me. My father always taught me to open doors for women and children and to let them go through a door first. I even hold doors open for other men, as I'm sure many other men do. Nowadays, however, some women consider such acts as discriminatory and chauvinistic. Forutunately for me, I married a woman who is more feminine and ladylike.
I recall one time holding a door open for an American woman who happened to be behind me. She became quite upset and excitedly informed me that she was perfectly capable of opening the door by herself. It seemed rather nutty to me as it was the same act I would taken had she been a he. The funny thing is that women like this want to be treated in this manner by other men, but even men don't treat other men in this manner. It would be considered rude.

The refereeing has been really bad. The FIFA needs to think of a better way to gather better, more competent referee officials for the next World Cup to prevent this kind of disaster from happening again. They should try something akin to a jury selection program.

Being a parent and having had some experience with this problem in Japan, it always surprises me at how inept a lot of the Japanese teachers are when it comes to dealing with bullies. As far as fighting back, it sounds good but the way they bully here is in groups against individuals. Unless you're Bruce Lee, these isolated kids who are being tormented by groups are quite helpless. Thus, it's critical for the schools & teachers to take a more responsible & decisive role, but in Japan schools & teachers are almost never willing to take such a stance. They would prefer to see the tormented student quit and go on to a different school and, in effect, leave the bullies (note of the pluralization) in place and undisturbed. It's a truly a miserable situation. However, there are a few schools which do nip the problem in the bud, and that's where the best solution to this problem lies.
