There is a great book about hitch-hiking through Japan following the cherry blossom front called 'Hokkaido Highway Blues'. Probably one of the funniest and most accurate portrayals of Japan and its people I've read.

At one point, I expect some irate non-muslim group to get so upset with the religion of peace that they'll blow up the Kaaba.
Good on Japan and Sri Lanka for trying to stop this destruction, but why was the rest of the world not made aware of the Bamiyan sculptures' impending doom at the time?

No, but people should pay to make comments.

And if it is a pay version, I expect a reduction in fees for every ad I see.

The problem isn't who is at fault here.

The captain or the person who was commanding the Shonan Maru should be arrested and tried... but not for ramming the boat.

Ignoring a distress signal from any boat, ship or watercraft is a serious crime in all navigation and marine laws, including international waters. When the Shonan Maru took off after the collision, leaving the Sea Shepherd to rescue the AG's crew (whose lives were in immediate danger) they committed a crime worse than the collision.

A korean piloting a tanker faced 10 years for accidentally ramming a smaller fishing craft and ignoring the Mayday signals in 2007. However, he was granted bail and fled Australia where it happened.

ronaldk: I agree with you. Nothing will happen quickly. It will be years and years before change happens. People need drama in their lives, this situation might as well be it for the Okinawans.

They reason they hide the handcuffs is that in some cases where guilt or innocence is unsure, the act of being photographed in handcuffs is a sign of guilt, and the defending lawyer uses it to throw out the case.
Leads me to think that anyone in a media frenzy case like this one could throw the case or at least add a lot of drama to it by pulling their hands out of the jacket or pouch the police hide the cuffs in. If he's starving himself, as soon as he's unable to stand, he'll be transferred to a hospital and put on an IV drip. Hopefully the police will be clever enough to handcuff him to the bed.

Bad news because the 'world wide web' becomes the 'country wide web' for many sites. Korean sites only accessible (through direct input) by people who can type in korean; same goes for Japanese sites, etc.

Expressionist Movements in Japan: The exhibition design didn't originate from the Shirakawa-koen museum, it is a touring exhibition stopping at several Japanese museums, including Hyogo, Tokyo, Tochigi and Nagoya.

Easy: Permanent ban from the train company on which the crime occurred. Men unable to ride the train would have to find a new job and new place to live: serious social punishment.

I wonder how much of this comes as a result of the impending olympic city decision.

From the perspective of what happened in the world cup, I don't believe that Tokyo deserves the Olympics. The Games are a time for the world to gather and watch the best athletes in the world compete with eachother. The Games are NOT a time for Japan to gather and watch the best athletes competing, while broadcasting the games to less than welcome foreigners.

Wow, Jesse writes an article for metropolis in hopes of promoting his production company and instead gets ripped to shreds by the people here. I filmed a short visual documentary last year at Yasukuni on the 15th of August, but I didn't bring a boom mic with a 'fuzzy thing': just a handicam and small tripod were good enough to capture the scene without attracting too much attention.
Why would someone filming non actors in a documentary film shout 'action'?

I believe that officially, the tables are on the street and the restaurant can't put tables down and look too official. Also, the beer crates have a certain natsukashii effect.

Why didn't they start with uranium enrichment instead of the more difficult method of creating atomic weapons? It would have made sense. Oh wait, the whole country makes no sense.

Does this mean that all the naggers in the area will have to go nag elsewhere?
I think we are all forgetting that the naggers also include the Chinese massage ladies.

I have learned that if you're on a mamachari in Roppongi, you are pretty much invisible to everyone.

This issue is one of the big ones holding me back from getting married to a Japanese. Do foreigners have more rights if the children were born overseas and have foreign passports?

I'm tired of being a visual minority. Some people thrive on it, but at the end of the day, it isn't the sort of positive attention that the revelers think they are getting. I'm packing up my 5 year stay in 1 year, nearly to the day.

I'm very tall, and can see over a lot of the fences in residential neighborhoods. Should there be some 'Prevention of tall people walking in residential neighborhoods' act?
