trucks? there are no trucks in japan, only big vans. try driving the 401 in canada surrounded by huge 18 wheelers who drive in packs, block the passing lane, ride up your a$$ and cut you off without the slightest hesitation. "how's my driving? call 1-800-f-off!"

oh, and that signal before braking thing? first of all, montreal drivers signal with their middle finger. if mr bonds had his way, we'd all be turning corners at 50 kph because of those little side streets and driveways that are always before the big streets. japanese signal for the corner they will turn at, not the one before it. if they have to slow down first, that's just reality.

and 40 hrs of driving lessons? more than enough. I had 10 hrs and was thrown to the montreal testers. in the test, the guy told me to turn the wrong way on a one-way street, make an illegal turn, pass a car on the right (left in japan)and park in front of a hydrant.

btw chiba is not considered the countryside. it's part of the megalopolis of 38m people called greater tokyo. you want nice roads? go to gunma. if you're really desparate for a drive in chiba, go tothe hills of kisarazu or take the back road between kamogawa and ichihara. not great, but not bad.

I can't believe he didn't mention traffic or scooters and motorbikes. those were my pet peeves, a while ago.

buddy has probably lived here for about 3 yrs, just gotten his japanese license, and is having a little culture shock. one word of advice: RELAX. Enjoy the traffic jam. it's a great time for conversation.

and thank his lucky stars he doesn't drive in montreal.

Anyone here complaining about this girl's looks is just posing. They'd take it in a flash if they were lucky enough. Thing is, they aren't.

Oh, and they offer deals at Disneyland, Budget rentacar, some onsens, some hotels, condos they own a piece of, fitness clubs, restaurants etc. The CC also acts as your ID you show, to get their special rates. I recommend it.

It's a Shigaku Visa/Citicard. Got it a few years ago. Verrry happy with it. Now they offer JCB, Mastercard and maybe a couple of others from what I remember. Shigaku is the association of private school teachers, but many other unions/professional associations offer the same kinds of deals if their membership is big enough. If you're paying into the union health/retirement/unemployment plan, try to get one. They should be free, mine is. The airport lounges are free too etc. In many ways it has the same perks as some gold or business cards.

psapiri, I don't know if you've checked around (it doesn't appear that you have), but you can get mileage or points from just about any CC. I get them on my citibank card which, by the way, is... free! Double/Triple point promotions and all. I use it for Air Canada tickets. I charge everything from satelite tv bills and phone bills to movie tickets etc.

In the end, it all depends on how much you spend. You might be getting 2 free tickets, but these aren't really "free" if you get my drift. No company is going to give plane tickets away for 12,000 yen like the way you state. I'm guessing that you folks are spending just a wee bit more than the average JT poster if you get enough points to get 2 free tickets. If you're willing to put up with the extra service charges that AMEX tacks on, I'd bet money on it.

12,000 yen for a free ticket? Right, lol. Who is really getting fooled here?

I don't see why everybody here is surprised at how crap commercial tv programming is in Japan. I come from Canada, where it's the same except a triple dose of it: English Canadian, French Canadian and American commercial tv (easily viewable if you live near the border) is all crap.

Japanese commercial shows are crap too, juts crap with a Japanese bent. Japanese quiz shows are a means for those tv stations and their useless tarento to make money by making fools of everybody. They make fools of the people on the show and they make fools of the public by creating such drivel. Why would anybody expect anything else?

Want better quality? Get a dish, rent what you want, or better yet: turn it off and write stupid comments on the internet about inane topics like this...hey wait...

I've been trying to figure this kind of thing out for years, and I think I finally get it. Check it out:

You're backing into a parking space so, with your foot on the brake, you turn around. You slowly give it some gas, but your foot feels funny so you move it taking it off the brake with the car slowly moving. You shift your butt, and try stepping on the brake but the car still moves and is speeding up. You jam your foot hard on the brake and the car lurches into the convenience store window.

    What just happened?

With all your shifting around, your foot got out of place. You panicked and pressed harder on the accelarator because you felt the car lurching forward and thought it was the brake. Fairly simple explanation.

No doubt about it, Japan should take in more refugees. The only problem is the verification process. Canada as well as other countries have been burned by their overly lax rules.
