Sarge, Patrick was forced into paying shigaku Kyousai the private school teachers' pension plan from the start, but that's DEFINITELY not all I've done. I don't trust the gov't to have any money when I retire, so I'm paying a monthly private retirement scheme (foreign company) on the side, as well as having foreign investments and savings in Canada. My wife and I make enough to keep this up, and we should be fine even if the J gov goes bankrupt, but I feel bad for the foreigners who have little left after Kasumigaseki takes its cut. I'm always advising foreign friends to double up on the savings/retirement plan.

Patrick, like you, I have no confidence at all in the J gov't to keep any promises to foreigners. Regular Japanese are fine, but the Pols are the same as anywhere. From the way it looks, though, the changes shouldn't really affect how my financial planning is going.

The student building at my university was voted the William Shatner building, after someone had proposed it during the naming process...as a joke. Probably some American.

Beelzebub, by the time 2011 rolls around, separate digital tuners will be available for less than 10,000 yen, if they're not already. also, i read a while ago that the gov't is planning to subsidize the changeover for low income households, iow, buy them a low end digital tuner.

that's the thing, you don't actually need a digital tv for the change, just a tuner attached to the analog tv.

very BS ish. my electricity bill has gone down with a flat screen tv and laptop instead of the old cathode ray behemoths. oh, and thats despite having more appliances now and double the number of people in the family.

Do you really think people are being hoodwinked by the LDP? Do you guys actually talk to real living Japanese people or what?

The flu scare made the economy worse. How does that help Aso? The LDP doesn't run TBS and all the other TV stations guys, sorry to burst your bubble. I know you like conspiracies but the fact is that the media smelled profit in a hot button issue, and they pushed it and pushed it and... still, the economy is in the headlines.

I had lunch with a bunch of Japanese friends yesterday, and the flu got about 2 minutes of talk time vs. about a half hour for the economy, salary cuts and ways to save money etc.

Anyway, the real issue is that Cinco de Mayo was cancelled in New York. Who cares? It's not even a real holiday in Mexico. Why do Americans care so much about it? Maybe it keeps their minds off the economy?

    Get real!

jonnyboy, for every girl like either of those, I get an eyeful of panties, and enough cleavage to make my 6 month-old daughter think it's happy hour. Japanese university girls dress like Aki Hoshino, and I've got nothing to complain about. Then again, it's the same back in my hometown, Montreal, just with longer legs and bigger... happy hours.

prevent discrimination by going after the companies who do it. maps do not discriminate, they merely indicate.

"Yes, the United States is going to be ruled by the Democrats forever."

in political terms, 8 years can sure feel like an eternity. but in reality it will probably end up being more like 12 or 16. wow, 2 eternities. doh! that really is forever.

Bet you can't see 10,000 other J-gals dressed the exact same tomorrow in Tokyo.

I'm more worried about the bad driving by the elderly than realistic images. Anybody with blurry vision should either get their vision straightened out, or not not be driving. period.

And the braking issues where elderly tend to step on the accelerator by mistake seems to me to be an unfixable problem. The only way around it is to have the cars drive themselves. Not too far fetched, it seems with all the sensor and Navi technology available today.

At the root of the problem is the pride of some elderly. Many realize that they need help and seek it out, taking advantage of pick-up/drop-off services, but still many see driving as a sign of their independence. sometimes at the expense of people's lives.
