hoserfella, that was in my next post. the transient nature of a beer buzz makes the transient nature of cherry blossoms even more appealing.

Total misunderstanding.
It is not a "Love of nature". It is an appreciation of the transient, fleeting nature of life in general. The beauty of cherry blossoms lies not only in their physical appearance, but in their limited existence. It is a metaphor for the human condition. Why do Japanese ceremonialize everything? It comes from the same appreciation of the transient.

I'm sure that Tom knows about and has probably seen THE DESERT FOX. I can't believe that he didn't know about this story.
Erwin Rommel is a far more interesting figure, but I guess it's hard to outdo James Mason. He directly opposed Hitler's orders to send Jewish prisoners to concentration camps, and among other insubordinations was also involved in the plot to kill Hitler. I guess Claus von Stauffenberg was the second most interesting guy in the whole story, because of his cool eye-patch.

I can't strand Mezamashi with its useless ENTA news and annoying background music. I swear that music is responsible for half of the suicides in Japan. And probably more than half of the random murders.
As for cute girls, I love 'em. Cute chicks from Jouchi Dai, even better.
Still, first thing in the morning, just give me homely old NHK.

bushlover, just look at the irony of the statement:
“If there ever was a time to put away that legendary Canadian modesty it is now.”
It's Harper who says that modesty is a legendary Canadian thing. So he, in one sentence, both promotes Canadian modesty and smashes it to pieces. And why is he saying this stuf in the first place? To pump up Canada at the expense of other countries. This just proves his arrogance. He could have said the exact same thing in a far less chest-pumping manner, but he chose not to.
Ask any Canadian which they think is a more admirable trait, modesty or arrogance.

rollonarte you don't get it. Arrogance is not a traditional Anglo-Saxon value. It's also un-Candadian.
Harper is an arrogant jerk. He inherited a fiscally reponsible government from the decade and a half under the liberal government, and now he's trying to take all the credit. Also un-Anglo-Saxon and un-Canadian.
He's probably right about Canada's fiscal viability, but if what he says is true, “Canada is receiving rare recognition these days in the United States and around the world for these strengths,” there's no need to actually say it. Very un-Canadian.
How ironic is that?

At least it's more interesting than Nicky Hilton's crap. Here, nobody seems to understand it, whereas in Nicky Hilton's case, there was nothing to understand.

i'm normally down on canada, but I actually think this is a good sign. the gangs are surfacing and getting caught due to the fight over drugs. this is a good thing to get over with before the olympics start.

Everybody likes these models? Wow! They are the most average looking girls I've ever seen. I'm serious. Nicky Hilton herself is a dog!

I can think of lots of things I'd buy with an extra 12000 yen. And, yes, I'd spend it on the same day i got it.

Dysprosium317 Shut-in, recluse, hermit, misanthope, these are all very good words to describe different types of hikkikomori. What's better, they're English.

id guess both are equally disdainful in numbers, but not percentages.
id say that meat-eaters who think about vegetarians become disdainful(or convert) the more they think about it, but not all of them think about it. while vegetarians, while in the minority, probably all disdain meat-eaters because they had to go through that process to become vegetarians in the first place.
that's my guess.

Take advantage while you still can. The overvaluation of the yen will not continue forever. It will sink more and if you've got foreign currencies, you should make some money.
