Intimidation. A few thoughts:
Over the years I have met so many Japanese guys who are not intimidated by foreign women(I know because they date foreign women), I wonder if these women who complain about this intimidation thing aren't just falling for a stereotype. In this case, a change of attitude is definitely in order. Anne, above, apparently has no problem finding Japanese guys who aren't intimidated by foreign women. Could it be that the stereotype isn't true? OMG!
There are Japanese guys who are intimidated by foreign women, but as far as I can tell they are intimidated by ALL women, regardless of their background. There's a distinct possibility that they may not even like women...in that way.
If these single women who contend that they intimidate Japanese guys indeed ARE single, then maybe they aren't just intimidating to Japanese guys, but to all men, including those in their own country.
There are guys who are intimidated by women, and they exist in every country. Here's a solution, don't blame them for your troubles.
If you are having trouble finding dates, maybe it's not the fault of the people who won't date you...or am I just repeating myself?
If indeed personality is the problem, just because Western guys put up with you, it doesn't mean that Japanese guys have to.
Just remember, it's always good to keep a sense of humor.

Shouganaika, Zaichik, I'm not saying that it's ok not to have fully enabled facilities. I'm all for normalization. I'm just pointing out, especially to those a little too eager to slam the whole country, that things are not perfect, but they're improving. Changing attitudes are an indication of this.
When I arrived in Japan, ten years ago, there was nothing. Now, I'd say 95% of the stations and stores I see are fully enabled. The ones that aren't are really old and literally carved out of the rock, like Bakurocho station.
Still, the station attendants who take people up and down escalators do it with a pleasant attitude that I never see on the faces of station workers in Canada. There, I feel like just buying a subway ticket is inconveniencing them. Many Canadian subway stations have no toilets too. And forget about using the toilet in a restaurant where you haven't bought something.
People with physical disabilities still have to put up with in Japan, but to say that the whole country is backward, like one of the posts that was deleted did, is disingenuous at best.

Actually "access" can be had, even at many places that don't seem to have it. Station workers are always taking people up stairs on little stair-climbers, or closing off escalators and reversing them.
I guess some people don't like the inconvenience of having to ask another person for help.

Libertas, tell Canada to catch up. My home country sucks compared to what I see in Japan.

likeitis, you don't think there would be an outcry against the BBC refusing to air an Israeli charity appeal?
Hmm, so you're saying anti-Jewish sentiment runs high in England. Well, with all the fanatical Muslims I keep reading about that live in England, I guess I'm not surprised.

The only solution is an British/Arab-nation peace-keeping force occupying the Palestinian territories. Permanently. After all, they are just as at fault for this situation.

one apparent contrast: israel seems to be trying to protect its civilian population from bombs; hamas seems to be holding palestinian civilians in contempt.

dogdog, so you're saying Japan should not strive for higher food self-sufficiency? I'm just trying to figure out the logic behind your diatribe.
As far as I see it, your arguments about safety etc are moot when compared to the power the almighty yen has over the average consumer doing their daily grocery shopping. This is not a situation unique to Japan, so I don't see why you're so critical.

we rent even though we have 2 kids. we only drive avg. once a month. public transport and bicycles are just too convenient to pass up. toocoo offers good deals on car rentals, for anyone interested. trips off the beaten path or shopping at costco are the only reason we need a car.
still, i do recommend getting your japanese driver's license if you're going to be here for a few years. it's well worth the headaches involved...that is, if you're not American. the US gov. gives its citizens extra headaches to enjoy. diminishing returns, i think is the appropriate term.

environmentalism, conservation, alternative energies and recycling do not contradict growth and capitalism, in fact they have nothing to do with it. there is oodles of money to be made in each of them.

herefornow-
Commercialism and materialism are rampant everywhere. I learned that lesson in grade school. It's nothing new. Get over it. I'm 37, married with 2 kids and happy living in Japan. Stranger things have happened. Your friend's girlfriend is superficial. Plenty of my ex-girlfriends in both Canada and Japan were superficial too. I didn't marry them. Your friend needs a new GF.
Japanese who stay at hotels on Xmas eve are a minute fraction of the overall population, and only confirm the fact that in Japan, as in every other country in the world, there are materialistic, superficial people. Again, this is something you and Mr. Fields above need to get over, and not make more out of than it really is. Of course, you only really need to get over it if you want to stop focussing on the negative and make the most of your life. It's a choice everyone has to make in their life. That's another lesson I learned a long time ago.
Enjoy Christmas, and enjoy Christmas in Japan. Lots of us do. There's no reason you can't too.

herefornow-- firstly, have you actually experienced this "Christmas hotel booking for sex" thing or are you just going by the sensationalist rumors? I have been here for 11 years and not yet met one Japanese or foreign person who has had this experience...not a one. secondly, none of the foreigners I know who have been here the length of time i have make minimum wage. that's why they're still here. i think you're referring more to the kind of people who come here for short periods of time.
Seriously, if you're going to write a comment, or commentary like mr. Fields above, I have just 2 requests: 1) base it on more than just rumor, false stereotypes or trashy magazine fiction, 2) be informative, and tell us something new. I don't like to read the same articles year after year, just by different writers. indeed, it seems like people have forgotten the origin of the word "news."
