WMD what did you learn in all your years of schooling? You can type well enough, yes, but can you read? I suggest re-reading the passage above, and re-writing your post. HINT: nowhere did she use the words "too difficult."

I expect your assignment to be posted by midnight, tonight. If you need an extension, please apply through the proper channels.

Which country started that "tiny t-shirt" trend for pre-teens, with words like "sexy" and "porn-star" on them?

The sexualization of young girls is for from being a uniquely Japanese thing.

    sicko stuff.

still, no country is actually innocent in this. it is legal for teens to have sex most G-8 countries I know of, while an arbitrary line of an 18 yr old boy having sex with a 17 yr old girl is considered statutory rape. many developing countries permit even children to get married to fully grown adults. child beauty pageants in the U.S. are equally disgusting in there attempt to push adult values on children. the jean benet ramsey case brought all this to light.

there's lots wrong with this junior idol stuff and I am 100% against it. however, lets drop all the holier than thou stuff already. laws are only a reflection of a society's values. so while Japan acknowledges there's a grey area and are struggling to draw the line, other G-8 countries let teens do all the dirty stuff, just not with certain people. if they were all really serious, they would enact laws prohibiting teen sex altogether, and enforce it (don't ask me how).

anything else is just lip service.

Finally, we get to deal without the noise of an engine, making for dreams of quieter days, and some people have to ruin it? I'm sure whatever sound they decide on it's going to be annoying. Why can't those with good eyes use their eyes? And if the visually impaired can't hear them maybe they can be given special quiet car sensors. Somebody should invent one, or at least invent some kind of motion sensor for the blind, anyway. I mean besides the granny bicycles, how do they hear the quiet ones?

So I guess the myth of better hearing is just that, a myth. I mean, no car is truly "silent".

    Cleo,

Very, very few live the kind of life posters seem to take to be the norm

You hit the nail on the head. Most posters here have little knowledge of what average Japanese people actually do all day outside of studying English. You can hardly blame them, though, if their only exposure is their Eikaiwa students, Roppongi, and TV shows that they can't understand.

This is the behavior of an idiot. I know a guy like this, and his wife wants to leave him ASAP.

Japan's landlords are notorious, and I don't know much about office space, but from everything I hear, London's apartment rental fees should be more than those of Tokyo. It may have to do with the yen's recent strength against both the pound and the dollar since the end of last year.

As for livablility, I love Tokyo. I've stayed in New York and London and Paris, and definitely prefer Tokyo, but it's all subjective. Anyway, I'm not a true ex-pat, and so don't fall under the conditions set out in these kinds of surveys.

Number one in Asia? sure. Number 3 in the world? not so sure.

    Just my 2 cents.

The only violence I've ever experienced in Japan were from other foreigners.

One idiot Aussie sucker-punched me in a bar because he didn't like my glasses. Another time an English guy started pushing me, trying to pick a fight, saying that I was cheap to let my date pay for my ramen at a yatai. She only happened to be my wife, but hey! Also, the only violence I have personally witnessed in my 11 years here has been between foreigners, mostly in Roppongi.

I find all the jealousy about these statistics to be quite pathetic. Aren't you guys embarrassed to make yourselves look like a bunch of whiners? Seriously! The amount of whingeing going on here is hilarious. So Japan is safer than your home country, suck it up and enjoy it! Or is it really just too much to bear?

Maybe you want to fight about it? lol

i wouldn't characterize is as a safe society, but an insular discriminatory society that views anything other than Japanese as below their interest

so it's safe to say, whatever the reality is, you've got an agenda to push and by golly, you're gonna push it.
