"Airplanes" are still "aeroplanes" in the UK, but I'm sure the American cultural bulldozer will 'fix' that soon enough.
Aeroplane safety often takes a back seat to aesthetics. For example, in many crashes passengers have been incapacitated by broken bones, blows to the head etc and can't escape burning wreckage. If all seats faced backwards instead of forwards, these injuries would be reduced drastically. I remember the person who put forward that idea was ridiculed mercilessly by people who said that it would be 'unnatural' - to which he replied there was nothing natural about hurtling along at 650mph in a metal tube at 30,000 feet.
Anyway, hats off to the Wright Bros, true pioneers!

Keeping ganja illegal is simply providing criminals with a lucrative line of business, just like prohibition in the USA in the 20s. I'd go further and say that all recreational drugs should legal, controlled and taxed, just like the three most popular recreational drugs- alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

Variety? Perhaps, but a vegetarian in Tokyo generally has to either (a)love eating Indian, (b)love British bars, or (c)learn to cook. Especially since otherwise veggie-friendly stuff, such as Italian or Mexican, is almost always made with chicken stock in Japan. How say you, Cleo? :-)

A large percentage of Japanese 3G smartphones run on the Symbian operating system from Britain. So Japanese consumers have already been buying foreign smartphone technology for a number of years.

MissWorldTravel: By your logic, Japan shouldn't import import anything that can be made in Japan. I imagine you possess many items made abroad. Do you want to restrict your choice to only Japanese products?

Nokia smartphones have been available from Softbank for years. I've got an N95; 5 Mpix, e-mail, web browsing, excellent audio, Japanese language support- and I can even watch British TV on it via my Slingbox.

Last night's softball match was much more exciting than any of the televised baseball matches I endured during these Olympics. Watching baseball is simply a chore unless you're at a stadium with friends being served beer by top totty in tiny dresses.
And I don't understand why, in both sports, the fielders are allowed to wear such enormous comedy gloves. How is it possible to miss a catch when you're wielding a scoop that wouldn't look out of place on a JCB excavator? It can't be anything to do with the hardness of the ball, because even though cricket balls are just as hard, cricketers don't rely on such absurd contraptions- they just use their hands.

What's to stop a Japanese simply buying a Java text book for 8000 yen and learning to program by him/herself?
And it's incredibly ignorant and arrogant to suggest that foreigners study IT using pirated software.

I came to Japan to join a famous European company. During the induction day, a Japanese staff member gave a presentation mainly for the benefit of Japanese newbies about how it's ok to disagree with your boss and voice your own opinions. In fact, they went as far to say that if you disagree with your boss you must inform him. This produced numerous 'huueeeees'. However, it was also stressed that it's possible (and necessary) to do this while still being polite. The approach 'Mike' had is not only a complete no-no in Japan, it would also ensure his failure at any European company. Incidentally it was interesting to see all my Japanese fellow newbies turning up to work for the first few days in immaculate salaryman attire, only to quite rapidly swap that for the jeans and t-shirts everyone else was wearing.

ihope2eatwhales: Then why not tuck into Japan's huge stockpile of unwanted whalemeat (instead of feeding it to dogs), and then hunt in your own back yard (as per 'tradition') and stop lying ?

Patrick Smash: even as a staunch veggie I agree with your logic. However, Japan doesn't hunt whales in 'Australia's back yard' because of its 'tradition'. It does so because its politicians like to whip up 'Poor Little Japan v The Big Nasty Outside World' fervour amongst the populace, and thus stay in power. And people such as 'ihope2eatwhales' are hooked as easily as a minke in a whale sanctuary. If Japan did something reasonably sensible as you suggest, there'd be much fewer protests and therefore much fewer votes for the politicians.
