The main fault has to be katakana Engurishu.

People all over the world get to learn English through studying and through hearing it in films, songs, television etc. But when a Japanese child is taught Engrish such as reddo, hoito, buraku, lefuto, Misutaa Sumisu etc they can never enjoy the benefit of learning by listening. I'm wondering whether Japanese students ever question why they never hear Engurishu spoken in English films? (Films such as the 3-part Tolkein epic "The Road of the Ring" ...)

An extreme point of view. I don't agree with it but it's more honest than bolierplate blinkered political correctness.

So what's the difference between aborting/killing a baby one day before birth and killing it one day after birth? Especially from the baby's point of view?

whitepocky: as a Hammers fan myself I could see that Alf was joking about Upton Park. Anyway, NO Welsh or Scottish (or NI) grounds will be included in England's bid because 1 - it's ENGLAND'S bid, not the UK's - 2: England has more than the necessary number of suitable stadia - 3: Wales, Scotland and NI traditionally bid for their own tournaments and 4: Wales, Scotland and NI want no co-operation at all with England on international events. That's why they refuse to contribute to a GB Olympic football team.

Yawning without covering one's mouth (I've never seen a Japanese cover their mouth); smoking in restaurants; being completely needlessly barged into and then receiving no apology.

Sarge: you think walking up an escalator is bad manners?!

What a bunch of killjoys. This clock is a gas. Every morning Mrs Taiko hides it somewhere in the house. When it goes off it's damn loud and sounds like R2D2 on speed, so I have to leap out of bed and find it before I lose my mind. And it's great for freaking out the cat when you hit snooze...

Alf- I've been a Hammers fan for donkey's years, having visited Upton Park for the first time in 1972. I totally agree with you about ManUre fans (glory fans) but I don't share your contempt of ManUre. As you know, the mighty Irons (=West Ham for those that don't know) have a fantastic history of nurturing new talent at their 'academy' (recent England squads have contained many ex-academy students: Lampard, Carrick, Defoe, J.Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell.) And let's not forget West Ham won the World Cup in 1966! (capt=Moore, scorers=Hurst, Peters, all ex-academy.) But like it or not, ManUre actually bring on young players as well as buying top players with their limitless finances. This is in stark contrast to Chelski or the Arse.

As for this tournament: I don't understand the whingers. You like football, but you don't want to see it played?

zolt: so you think even known members of criminal gangs should be eligible for jury service on the grounds that it's not always possible to tell who's in a criminal gang and who's not? You have the shouganai attitude down to perfection!

But they are in breach of international and maritime laws. Which, at the very least makes them pirates.

Really? If you were to sail a ship with a broken navigation light you'd be breaking maritime laws, but would that make you a pirate? Pirates are people who are guilty of piracy, not people who merely break maritime law. Also, even boarding a ship without permission is at most trespass, not piracy.

Just because someone robs you of your money, you can't take the law into your own hands and rob them back.

If somebody snatched 10000 yen from my pocket I'd be perfectly entitled to snatch it back. But I see the point you were trying to make.

I agree throwing butter was illegal, as was boarding without permission (in order to deliver a letter!!!) illegal.

In these ultra-conformist times where the right of protest is being eroded all over the world, borderline illegal and sometimes illegal activity can be justified. But never violence (and throwing butter at a ship is not violence.) Insisting that the law always trumps morals just makes one a subservient, non-thinking drone (the way world governments want you.)

To be honest, I'd rather Sea Shepherd didn't do anything obviously illegal. But I fully support their right to obstruct the hunt.

Ah, the annual whale hunt slanging match.

    Nothing much changes.

Japan will continue to blatantly and cringe-makingly lie; Sea Shepherd will continue to grab headlines by being one of the few action groups in the world willing to actually go and do something, while people with absolutely no sense of proportion will continue to call them terrorists; Japan will hurl its toys out of the pram; and while all this hubbub is distracting everyone, Japan will continue to hunt other species (eg tuna) to the edge of extinction (as it did to the Japanese Sea Lion. RIP)

BTW I'm sure Sea Shepherd will be able to disrupt the hunt without transgressing any of the laws of Antarctica Prefecture.

    buttamimi:

Was the war against British occupation of Ireland justified? Yes

    For crying out loud.

So you're saying terrorism is preferable to polictal dialogue?

I'm sure my next door neighbour who was blown up in the London Victoria Sta bomb in 1991, and the hundreds of other innocent civilians slaughtered or maimed in terrorist attacks would be happy to know that it was all justified.

AFAIK, BA and Qantas are the few major airlines who are men-hating enough to force a man who ends up sitting next to a child to move to another seat.

Skin care is simple: don't smoke, don't frazzle yourself in the sun, keep hydrated, avoid too much coffee, use a moisturizer and (taiko's tip!) don't use soap on your face.

I think one of the reasons Japan makes such an issue about whaling is to divert attention from its hideous over-fishing of everything else, including tuna. It works too.

    Another "only in Japan" moment.

Not so much the actually story (although perhaps "only in Japan" do we seem to hear these peeping stories several times a week), but some people playing down the crime or even saying it's not paedophila.

You can't compete with Japanese phones

A large percentage of these 'Japanese' smartphones use the Symbian OS from the UK, 70% owned by Nokia. The 'engines' of these phones, which actually enables them to do things, are actually created in London. The cutesey factor, and place on which to hang a doohickey, are created in Japan.

I think Nokia found it hard to 1) strike deals with Japanese stakeholders in order to provide electronic cash services etc (I suspect being foreign didn't help things) 2) convince the Japanese public to accept something 'different'; 3) convice Softbank and Docomo to actually attempt to sell the Nokia phones they were stocking; 4) realise that in Japan it doesn't matter if your phone blows away the opposition in terms of power and capabilties- if it doesn't look cute, and Japanese, the public aren't going to be interested.

Nokia are now going to sell the Vertu, which is basically a fashion accessory phone which can do the basics. Thus I think they've finally understood the Japanese phone-buying public's mindset.

electronic wallets, train tickets, and even to watch television

Nokia has this technology and uses it in other markets. Technology is not the problem (especially since the mainly Nokia-owned Symbian OS powers many of the leading Japanese smartphones.) So there must be other reasons why Nokia was unable to provide these particular features (which require close co-operation with relevant Japanese companies and authorities) in Japan.

Let's hear it for the keystones for clearing up this mystery! Their diligence and perseverence in sitting around in the koban waiting for somebody to inform them of the whereabouts of this child('s body) must be commended.

If you report your kid missing, you will be investigated, and here is why

    It seems they weren't investigated.
