In the 80s Tsukuba was a commonly floated idea for decentralization: close enough to Tokyo to be convenient, but far enough to reduce congestion. Then in the mid-90's the topic heated up after the Kobe quake, with the focus this time being on redundancy and cities such as Nagoya and Sendai were among the most discussed.
This time round, I wouldn't be surprised if discussions didn't focus even further afield. Fukuoka, Sapporo,...

Keep in mind, this is one private company and NOT the Korean government.
It's unfortunate that they are getting any publicity.

I must respectfully disagree on two points.. 1) This little teapot tempest is great publicity for both Top Gear and the Nissan Leaf, and Nissan is smart to take the publicity. 2) There's no point in dismissing Top Gear as simply a "foreign television" program. The Nissan Leaf is being marketed in the UK, not just in Japan. Also, this very popular BBC program is shown in many countries around the world, including Japan, which is where I (a Canadian) have been watching it for years.

beggars belief? I'm guessing you've never experienced true despair. Here's hoping your life continues to be so kind.
It would appear that these parents were frail enough that he could carry both. Were they aware? Complicit? Drugged? Senile to the point of vegetation? His mother was still relatively young.
Too bad there isn't more social support for elder care. This sort of thing is too common and horribly tragic.

NetSamurai, in the case of the meeting with the Iwate governor - fair enough. I could let that slide as some badly chosen words; a bad attempt at humour in a stressful situation. The meeting with the Miyagi governor on the other hand, is NOT simply circumstance. There he showed his character. An arrogant, petty, callous excuse for a human being. Worse than the bumbling, attention-seeking Ishihara. Matsumoto deserves a good shunning.

I don't think Kan picked him. Matsumoto was a loud voice calling for Kan's resignation. Ryu-chan was a political appointee - ie: intra-party politics. Kan's possibly just as happy to see him self immolate so promptly.

KobeKid, re: hospice work. I think that must be about the toughtest sort of volunteer work there is and you have my extreme respect. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see data showing that people with afterlife beliefs have an easier time working in with the dying. I wouldn't necessarily expect that would hold true across disaster relief, however.
