I agree with Yasukuni@1:23 regarding the low popularity rating of Kan and his cabinet. The people are DISCONTENT. They are pissed, not only about this cabinet's response, but that things were allowed to go along as the did at Tepco for decades. If asked, probably no one political party or politician (expect possibly Edano) would do any better. Just because 2/3 of people were dissatisfied with Kan, doesn't mean they wanted him replaced with someone else.

Thanks for the update, Hiko, about Kan's resignation.
I was just going to respond to your 12 noon mail saying of Ozawa, "I don't see any outcome from this where he gets power" by saying, he'll be back in full power if Kan resigns.
Would you disagree with that statement? Sure, he'll let someone else be the punching bag, but he'll be the one calling the shots.
Moderator: Readers, please note that Kan has not yet resigned.

I just booked my summer flights. The first suggestion of the travel agent had me saving a few thousand yen by flying through and changing planes in a third country. And had me spend more time in the air, by going past my destination and back again, rather than have a five hour wait at one airport in my home country. When I suggested that alternate route, they wanted to make sure I was aware of that long stop-over. Even with it, I started my journey an hour later and arrived 15 minutes earlier.

I was surprised to see Ozawa's face all up and down the coast of Iwate. The people there seem to support him - or at least they have up to this point. I wonder what the disaster victims think of all this grandstanding. (Or perhaps they wouldn't use such a negative term as me.)
To me it looks like a bunch of opportunistic asshats jumping at the chance to grab more power for themselves.
My views don't count though, and I realize that.

yep. need a button for "a combination" as no one of those alternatives is going to pack the punch of nuclear. And as we are now increasingly aware, putting too many eggs in a single basket makes you vulnerable. We need redundancy and we need to be less reliant on power for everything. (ie: the toilets in our office building that need electricity to flush fer chrissake!)

I used to love Shimura Ken's weekly show, which was entertaining even when I couldn't understand a word of Japanese. I still enjoy the old Drifters rerunds, but then, I was raised on the Carol Burnett show and later SCTV.
I hope this works out. I don't really care about celebrity guest stars or musical guests. I'd also be much more interested in seeing a "Daily Show / This hour has 22 minutes" type show that entertained while making people see the news and politics in a different light.

"Call me unorthodox, but I actually think these firework displays would SAVE ELECTRICITY"
Good thing there is data on power consumption, so we don't have to rely on our assumptions.

You've really hit the nail on the head, Fredster. And Driveon's follow-up comment is bang on as well.
If I were a Ford shareholder, I think I'd be calling for a replacement Japan CEO.

fireworks do not run on electricity.
but the trains do. and the fireworks lead to massive crowd turnouts and massive crowds on the trains - which will likely be running at lower capacity.
postponing the fireworks is a fine idea. beats the hell out of cancelling them all together!

The "remodeled" Explorer. Does that mean they made a right-side drive for export? Or that it is a smaller, less guzzly version for export? Surely Ford has something more suitable for Japan in it's line-up than that monster. Why wouldn't they be drawing attention to that?
Although Ford has been making some progress in quality in recent years, I expect German cars will continue to dominate the import business here.

Hard to imagine that the police enforce edicts laid down by religious leaders, when there is no actual law to be broken. Here's hoping the women have more impact this time around, than they had in the late 70s.

Name is vaguely familiar, but I know zip about him, so I'll agree with you, lostfune2, on my behalf. I do expect many others are better informed than I am though.
It's hard to imagine anyone who would be a bigger hypocrite than Newt or a bigger clown than Trump (who sadly threw his towel in, rather than his hat). Is this fellow on the Mitt Romeny, "actual contender" end of the scale?

"more or less of a daily basis"
fortunately for most of the year, that's a bit of an exaggeration. I've always heard that April / May are the worst months. People starting new jobs, new schools on April 1st suddenly feel homesick or overwhelmed after the initial euphoria has worn off. I've never seen the statistics to back that up, but it fits with my experience of commuting here over the past couple decades.
I'd also venture to guess that the numbers of deaths by Chuocide have dropped in the last 20 years, but I have no stats - just a gut feeling. What do the rest of you think?
