"But the damage has been done. “These are very unseemly debates,” said Yale’s Kelly. “Baseball has struck out.”"
Yes. When I want to know waht's happening on the ground in Japan, I seek out the athority of a Yale professor.
???!
The writer of this article seems to want people to believe that koshien is suddenly important, because the pros have dropped the ball, whereas Koshien has allways been something of great interest and importance to the populace.

(that is a "when this happens, it will be said" construct! Someone, please help! Have I lost my mind?)

Well, thank you for your highly formed opinion, Pamelot. I, however, disagree. White shirts, which require extensive laundry attention and are easily spoiled, are a sign of wealth & prestige. Neckties, also a silly bit of foppery, that should never have made it into Asia and certainly should be laughed off in any country where daytime temperatures are frequently in the 30s. Just not environmentally sound.
The work jumpsuits that the pollies are wearing show: 1) we realized the gravity of the situation. 2) this is not business as usual. 3) we are one with you.
Now, as for the powder blue colour - well that wouldn't have been my first choice.

Makes more sense than a white shirt and necktie.

Would April 28th be the 49th day (according to Buddhist funeary rites?)?
I'd like to suggest that we have a National Day of Mourning set aside. After that, things can go ahead, but I think everyone would feel better about it if we all had a chance to mourn together.
(And if it is the 28th, it would mean a longer golden week vacation for the people who just don't care.)

"When 80% of the trees’ flowers have opened, an area is officially designated as in “full bloom.”"
Yes, Whatthe. I am aware of that piece of information. Please read that article one more time. It is not saying, implying, or insinuating that anything is in FULL bloom yet. When that one bench-mark tree in front of the Noh Stage at Yasukuni Shrine reaches 80%, about 8 or 9 days from now, by my estimation, Tokyo will be upgraded from IN BLOOM to IN FULL BLOOM.

@whatthe, "officially in bloom" not "in full bloom" or even "in partial bloom". Just, simply, in bloom, which means it has started.
And actually, that official tree had about 20 open. I didn't get close enough to try to count. From the distance, it didn't look to be in bloom. But when you got closer, you could see them. There were a lot of people crowding forward to take photos. None of the other trees I saw had any open blossoms yet.
It'll be at least another week before it's worth sitting under them, but this year Yasukuni has signs saying that following the earthquake disaster, people are asked to refrain from hosting enkai.

Sounds like this was not the father's wife's kid. Perhaps son of his first wife? HeThe old fellow got custody and then let the next wife's cousin serve as nanny at "his son's apartment".
The little heir apparent had his own household already?
Very strange story.

No Tokyovisitor, I am not in minnetonka. I am in Chiyoda-ku. I ate lunch at Yasukunijinja today. And I took pictures of the "official" first blooms on the Official Tokyo cherry tree.

"Yes, but it save in electric light for businesses and homes."
I suppose.... If it means everyone leaves the office by what is now 4:pm (and still bright enough to commute home without any lights on in the trains.)

"I hope the lists have been transcribed onto a website somewhere for families to check?" Yes, but there are still plenty of people without PCs (or the electricity to run them), who are making the rounds of evacuation points, hoping to find family members.

4 day work week = good, but it should be staggered. Some companies run Monday to Thursday, and some Tues. to Friday.
With trains running at reduced capacity, hopefully even rigid companies can now see the benefit of flex-time and telecommuting. I'd be happy to work from a vacation home far from Kanto, and commute in 2 days a week.

Longer summer vacations: o-bon should be stretched from 5 days to 10 this summer and it should be staggered, so that companies in even-odd numbered wards should take the vacation earlier/later. Yes it will be disruptive to business, but if we can keep people out of the downtown offices during peak heat, that's a good thing.
Totally banning of neckties and suit jackets. Jimbei and yukata as the new business attire.
Does daylight-savings save energy in Summer? (I'd like for us to just jump two hours earlier and stay there, but that's for other reasons.)

True, some night events that would suck a lot of electricity should be postponed. But things must go on for the sake of the economy as well as the mental health of the population.
I like that idea of a national day of mourning. Perhaps the 49th day should be it.
