Saturday afternoon my convenie was completely out of beer but the happoshuu shelves were full. My assumption was that people were splurge buying. If were all gonna die, at least get drunk on the good stuff!
And then I saw Kakuyasu making a delivery to the neighbors. That was when I thought maybe things aren't really that entirely F'ed up.

Britt, about donating bottled water, by the time it gets shipped to Japan, and then up to wherever... I'm afraid shipments from the rest of the country will have more than filled the gap. And probably in large tanks, rather than little individual serving bottles.
It's hard to know of goods that can be efficently donated and distributed from such a distance in time for them to be needed. I'm trying to think of what people will need a month from now... And having a hard time. Work boots? Rubber boots? Blue tarps - so many uses!
I'd like to get up there in coming weeks and months to help individuals cleaning up, mucking out, etc.., but need to wait until the point at which I can be sure I won't be more of a burden on the infrastructure.

"All the shops in Tokyo and Chiba are empty!"
Hyperbole, much?
Yes, some places have seen some hoarding. Others are fine. My 7-11 got at least 2 shipments yesterday, including bread, onigiri, and cup noodle and the shelves at the AEON were normal.

Disillusioned: "the million or so Tokyo residents that don't read kanji!"
Sorry, but I call hyperbole. newbies + lazy long-termers from non-kanji countries< 1million. Not even close.

Silverhammer. we ARE doing all those things you listed. (dark offices. no heat, toilet seats all unplugged, etc. The buidling owners (Sumitomo Fudosan) have implemented loads of it. Each tenent in every bulding can then follow on. As for homes, we had loud-speaker announcements starting yesterday asking us to limit to absolutely essential power consumption.
A number of companies (Toyota, etc.) announced over the weekend that they'd keep manufacturing plants closed down.
All in all, these modest efforts are hopefully adding up.

Thank you people of Malyasia!
‘‘We apologize unreservedly if we had been seen to be insensitive to the gravity of the situation,’’ MediaCorp’s SVP.
That "apology" is as bad as the insult. "we're not sorry we did it; we're sorry you noticed." FU MediaCorp!

Do I have a kit? Yes. Several. Are they adequate. Not really.
I will do some reorganizing, but for now, I'm sleeping with shoes, gloves, flashlight, army knife in a small bag next to my futon. Bigger bag is further away. I always carry 1st aide stuff. The camping gear may come in handy during water or power outages . It's good having tent lights, and water jugs etc., around the house.

Narita Express isn't listed on the JR East website as one of the lines running, so I wouldn't count on it. Hopefully the limosine busses are running at full capacity.
Are you coming or going, Zaichick?

"Good, he'll never hurt or kill anyone else," says's Sarge, not being a believer in the idea of "innocent until proven guilty."

Sorry. I'm just not reading beyond that. Mr. Robson obviously needs to get around a bit more. Everyone has a first week on the job, but by and large, Tokyo's taxi drivers are fricking amazing!

It's not that I dislike them, I just don't know more than about 3 of their songs. All of conbenibento's references went over my head. I'm sure when they started playing them though, they'd be very familiar. Background music of my childhood.
And of course, KISS are showmen! It's not ALL about the music. And that's why I think it would be great fun to go see them.

I must agree with killdamessenger. This story is not about Japan. Neither does it have any "world" news implications.

"As police began to disband, bystanders began shouting obscenities at them. Some officers used police dogs to keep the angry spectators at a distance."
???
I wonder why. Did the police start by firing while neighbors were warning that there were kids in the house? Was this Boles fellow really, really well-liked? Are the police THAT disliked? What made the crowd so concerned and then angry?

I think not. Of course, I don't have any name lists of attendees / participants to use to confirm that.
Do you?
