"The students gave such lame excuses as “Since the newspaper can be read online for free, it’s stupid to pay for it”."
The newspaper company had better be hiring some of these kids quick, because those students are right-on-the-money and the kind of person who thinks that a "lame" excuse, rather than "crisis of the industry's existence", is a person who needs to step out of the way.

"The U.S. spends more on health care than any other nation yet ..."
Does that mean they get/use more health care? Or could it simply be more expensive?

Do you think senile dementia is not a nightmare for everyone anywhere?
As for putting the senile into a facility,... that's not always 100% either. I can remember an old guy escaping twice from the hospital I was staying in when I had my tonsils out. The RCMP had to be called both times to comb the neighborhood for an old fellow in gown and slippers with his name written on them. He couldn't remember his own name but he certainly knew that he didn't want to be where he was.

"12 p.m." does not exist. It's 12 noon or 12 midnight.
Are we to assume this is from noon?

"“Has anybody, any family in America, any single mother, any spouse, any child, any grandparent met a more bureaucratic system than the American health insurance system? There is no more bureaucratic system.”"
I haven't lived in the US, and I don't trust what I think I know from TV and movies, so I'd like to ask the Americans here, who've lived abroad. Is there some truth to that?
((I've lived in two countries and always just went to a clinic, hospital, or pharmacy, for what I needed. No HMOs. No worry about pre-existing condidtions. No worries about whether I was employed or between jobs. No checking in with an insurance company to make sure something was covered, before a procedure.))

"the profit of these killers"
profit? I thought it was unprofitable, and therefore a drain on the taxpayers.

DenTok2009, you wouldn't remember Nobuyuki Sato from that time, as it wasn't until much, much later that the girl was discovered. He wasn't even a suspect in 89.

Wouldn't you want to have me arrested if I started firing bottles of, say, human feces at you while you worked?
Funny you should say that. We were just discussing whether that were the case, right here yesterday. Welcome to the board, Shrkb8. Please do feel free to catch up on the discussions that have already been had.

Zenny, Joyful Honda has "EVERYTHING" household; indoor and out. I love the gardening supplies. The Tsuchiura store (nearer Tsukuba), is HUGE.

"a period widely considered to be representative of Japan’s fall from grace within the world of game development,"
"Japan’s fall from grace within the world of game development,"
Hmmm. I would like to hear the opinion of the JT readers on this statement. How widely considered is this?

"BDL has been giving Christianity a very negative image in this country."
To me, it's about the noise pollution. I'm fine with a guy standing holding a placard, but when the sound trucks come around, ... I don't care if they're political, religious, or commercial, I HATE THEM ALL.
repentjapan, ever hear the old honey/vinegar argument phrase about winning flies? Maybe a better tactic would be to not piss people off. The right-wingers use sound vans as intimidation. Is BDL aiming for something different?
Again, I'll just repeat what plastic monkey said, "BDL has been giving Christianity a very negative image in this country."

270000 yen over the years of 1999-2008? That doesn't actually amount to that much per season. And seriously, not a big deal. At work we have our "global policy" of zero gifts accepted from clients, and our local policy: declare and share anything you expect is under 10,000 and refuse anything above that. Refusing ALL gifts is really culturally inappropriate in most cases. Government officials that we do business with are very strict though, and that is a good thing.

I think a lot of westerners mistakenly expect justice in a family court, whereas justice and family are entirely unconnected for Japan (and most Asian and African nations).

pointofview: "He should have the right to see his kids" Screw that. His rights should amount to nought. He was the lying, cheating scum how left them behind in Japan in order to shack up with another family, while establishing 6 months "residency" in TN so he could get a favorable divorce there. Selfish. And I maintain that his new wife is an insufferable bully.
Now, that said, the kids should have the right to see their father.
Along with the right to live in their native country.

"Japanese law forbids him to see them." ???
I read all the court papers and reports from the original mediation. Chris is a narcisistic pr:ck. And his new wife a bully.
That said, Japan really, really needs to change it's family laws, to put priority on the rights of children.

"I'm for the scanners. Not the pat downs.""
But what happens when the scanner shows an "irregularity"? The person is then sent for a grope. It's not just people who fear excess radiation (flight crews, cancer patients/survivors, frequent travellors, etc.) who get the enhanced hand search. It's anyone who voluntarily takes the scan, but the scan picked up on something.
