I'm hoping that potential protesters decided it would be better to let people get home for their holidays and then snarl things up on the return days...

"Liberals around the world are high-fiving themselves over this issue since they want all governments to control every aspect of their lives."

Romeo, I don't think you know what "liberal" means.

Bluefin tuna stocks in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean have dropped 60% from 1997 to 2007,...

Did something happen in the late 90's or early 00's that contributed to this decline? The Atkins and South Beach diets? Surely they couldn't have had such an impact. Did the Japanese consumption suddenly increase? Not that I noticed. Were quotas increased in Europe willynilly to make up for lost cod fishing income? Possible? Warming oceans leading to stock migrations to cooler waters?

Or is this just a snapshot in time of an overall fluctuation in population?

Both ship captains to blame in whale protest sinking: NZ gov't report

Editor: I haven't read the full findings, but according to the article both ship captains to blame in whale protest collision according to the NZ gov't report, not the sinking. Watson and Bethune blame both admit that the sinking was done by Bethune, after the fact. They disagree on whose initiative he scuttled the vessel on.

Limbo, you have something against msg?

When I was a kid, mom used campbells soups in meat dishes at least twice a week. They really did a great job of marketing through recipes.

Chains can do it, but not mom&pop or any place that uses fresh produce to determine the menu of hte day.

Those places, that do their own cooking, can simply answer questions about what's in the dishes and labelling of chemical components isn't necessary.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise."

    (Attributed to Socrates, by Plato)

Really, kids are as they ever were. Adults, too.

Posted in: Do you think children of past generations had better manners than kids today when it comes to gestures like saying "please," "thank you?"

I think it weird/wrong to refer to a druken home-owner's banging on about the nightly disturbance from a noisy bar next door as an "innocent cultural misunderstanding". Or a dj reacting badly out as the drunk tries to stop the music for himself.

first Asian showroom ...in a fashionable Tokyo neighborhood,

Now I guess the next thing I need to look up is WHERE the showroom is. Too bad that wasn't included in the article.

I can't wait for then next two years to pass, so that I may be in a better position to buy one!!

Wikipedia's info is dated, but from a slightly more recent source, as of 2007:

"less than 10 percent of electricity produced currently is oil-generated. The number of natural gas-fired power stations is increasing in Japan and roughly 30 percent of electricity is natural gas-fired. Coal remains an important fuel source and accounts for roughly 25 percent of electricity generation."

More than I would have imagined.

(electricity made by coal) Bebert61 - interesting point. But how much of Japan's electricity is produced from coal?

"Why be a long term immigrant when you have the opportunity to become a citizen?" I ask myself this on a regular basis. And I still don't have an answer. Part of it is that I grew up with the idea that dual nationality is common and I am eligle for EU citizenship, in addition to Canadian, and the idea of giving up both of those options for just one single nationality seems wasteful. Not that that is a satisfactory excuse, but I still haven't gone to the bother of naturalizing and getting myself the right to vote here, where I live, work, pay into the pension scheme, pay all my taxes,...

Forced retirement anywhere sucks, goddog! Some of these people will be employed. Fewer youths to fill those dish-washing / table-setting jobs. It'll have to be seniors or migrants.

    Agreeing whole-heartedly with sensei-man.

"... threatening visits to old people by burly people wearing sunglasses were not so uncommon"

I was recently warned by a neighbor / slashed asked to help watch out for this very thing. An old building with just one little old lady tenant has been getting visits. The owner died and the offspring want to sell or redevelop. The neighborhood folk are rallying to protect the slightly batty old lady and keep the shady from harassing her. (I love my neighborhood!)

What was the name of that bar in Roppongi where these thugs walked around making sure you were holding a drink? Is that still around?

Gas Panic? (the orignial one, anyway, had big guys (parti-time models) who'd now and then walk around with a big bucket, which they'd bang with a stick to demand tips.)

What is it with Asian countries and towers/tallest buildings?

Probably the same as it is everywhere. You need a tall communications tower. Adding a bit more will give you a record that will probably bring in a few more tourist dollars, so why not?

Makes perfect sense to me. (As it did for Toronto when the CN Tower, which held the record for so long, was designed and built.)
