There's a huge difference between, say, central Chiyoda-ku and central Hamamatsu. The National Police force should mind their own business and let each city sort out what's best for it.
I live in central Tokyo and some of our sidewalks have clearly marked cyclying lanes, but no one pays any attention to them. One problem is dogs on leasheson the opposite side of the sidewalk as their owners. Tiny ones that wouldn't be readily visible to a cyclist busy minding pedestrians. I have trouble some days not tripping over stretched out retracto-leashes while walking.

Good to hear that the neighborhood around Zucotti park is looking to work with the protestors in a constructive way. I hope (and expect) donors can quickly be found to cover the cost of port-a-potties, if a place (places) can be found to put them. And I trust there are enough sensible people within the protest to help keep the more excitable onces quiet during the neighborhood's requested quiet times.

has anyone here seen the video? would it have been possible for the second driver to even see the girl laying on the road? I hope this leads to some sort of good samaritan laws in China. Even if someone doesn't want to move the child for fear of doing more damage, they could at least wave off further traffic and call for help, ffs.

I note that this article is written by Japan Today, not AP or Kyodo, etc.
This helps explain the inclusion of a statement of the likes of: "News of the incineration of potentially radioactive waste is almost certain to cause a public outcry. "
Is that a newsworthy fact?

Permissable protocol is waiting for the queen to extend her hand first. Extending your hand as if you expect her to take it is a BIG no-no. Gillard is very clear that she waited.
I would have chosen the same move, despite being happy to remain part of the monarchy, simply as I never have curtsied and wouldn't expect to be able to pull it off without looking like a total dork.
There's no flap to see here. Just the media trying to convince us otherwise.

Well, I will wait to hear HOW he said it before condemning him. Just the words don't give enough. I would not have guessed from Matsumoto Ryo's words alone just how truely dispicable his comments were. The tone and posture carried most of his contempt. I can imagine Hirano's words being said in a sad and grieving way - speaking of a lost friend with an affectionate "baka". I won't be surprised, though, if I later find he is just as mindless as so many career politicians.

I use probably 60% of the functions and apps I have on my phone in a given month. With my previous (stupid?) phone, I used the phone, camera, and address book only on a regular basis and text on occasion. The manual was over 1 cm thick so I assume there were plenty more functions but I couldn't be bothered.
With the iPhone (and I assume Android-based phones), it's all dead easy. And they're not pre-loaded with so much crap you don't need. Instead you download what you want.

Mother's milk is a gateway drug to harder stuff. Folks who get strung out on cocaine, heroin, meth, etc., all admit they started down their destructive paths by first sucking back milk.

I wonder if that "earlier case" was something that actually happened or if it's an urban myth that gets trotted out by snarky posters who don't see the damage that can happen as a result of repeating such rubbish.
(We get similar sorts of rubbish here, and I wish more people would call posters out on it).

I'd agree with that much of what you said. And to that end, I'd rather see money spent on cargo helicopters than stealth jets. Jet helicopters as well are handy in emergencies of all sorts.

Seems straight-forward. Guy with good business sense but inflated ego and poor personal skills. Hits fiscal targets but needs frequent warnings about his power-harassment. Just two weeks after getting new appointment, managed to do or say something egregious enough for a public shoving off.
I do not have any privy info on this. It could be different, but I've seen this sort of scenario often enough.

" the jobs plan would have been be paid for with a 5.6% surcharge on income exceeding $1 million that would have raised about $450 billion over the coming decade."
What? So that " massive tax hike that we know won’t create jobs, was on income over $1 million? Oooh. Poor rich folk. No wonder so many Americans are taking to the streets. Time for American Revolution 2.0.

Just below this we have a story of a mother prostituting her daughter for years. Why does everyone assume this mother was weak and innocent? Best not to assume anything, as really, anything is possible.

SouthSakai, have you been paying any attention to where Rakuten is expanding? eBay is a one market company. Amazon has managed to spread more broadly, but neither of them is truely global yet.
