I also wonder what is going to happen with Chris's Japanese citizenship. While he has that, he can't simply be deported, but neither can he claim support of the US state department. AFAIK, to have gotten the J-nationality, he had to swear that he had given up all other nationalities. If he's claiming he is an American and it turns out he never did give that up, can his Japanese nationality be stripped from him? That would make it easy for him to be deported without any charges. (And I'm not sure what they could charge him with. Was there some pushing and shoving as he grabbed the kids from Noriko?)

In court proceedings regarding from Chris's attempt to prevent the pre-agreed vacation in Japan, the judge clarifies that Noriko realizes that if she absconds, she will not have access to the $800,000 which is being paid into the court. Anyone know how that works? Is it supposed to beslowly doled out to her over time?

Part of "taking an interest in" the new husband's children should surely include showing some sensitivity to their freshly uprooted and tossed aside mother, with whom they were living most of the time. At least for the first couple of years.

"...I cannot hold it anymore if you keep bothering me.”

I wonder what that was referring to. Amy's coming around or Chris's taking all these emails to court, having their passports confiscated, trying to change the terms of the original agreement stating that the kids could travel to Japan for vacations, or something more.

    No means no, right?

The victim says "no" to further prosecution, that should be respected. Right?

hydro-electricity, water supply for 4 prefectures, and flood control IF the dam is built.

excess highways, bridges, tunnels, at two levels of altitude that will need to be maintained, whilst getting less and less usage if the dam is not built.

Who's going to go in and buy or build in the area now? No one in their right mind. The whole economy of the area will remain in limbo while the project remains half complete.

NOT finishing this particular project is the biggest waste of our taxes.

Calls for tougher punishment would mean = what Japanese prisoners get, right?

Perhaps someone can confirm this, but it is my understanding that the US military provides for some additional comforts for servicemen who end up in Japanese prisons, for example, with additional food rations.

Normally in Japan, death sentences are reserved for someone who has killed at least two people. There was some case recently of someone who got it for a single killing, but I can't remember the details and it may have since been successfully appealed.

I wonder if this guy was assessed by a US military issue psychiatrist. I'd like to think so.

Thanks, Cleo. And I agree. A survey of public opinion today would probably already show a significant drop in support over this time last year, just based on the Tochigi case.

I would like one, but only if the music function could be turned off. (I've been looking for a good "piggy bank" for my spare change, but I don't think I'd appreciate the audio on a daily basis).

I thought this sort of thing belonged to famine stricken countries, not to Canada.

Please remember, Canada is made up of lots of sorts of folks, such as for instance, Ms. Jean, the current head of state, who came to the country as a refugee from one of the world's most starving nations. I wonder if her background has given her a slightly different view of food from what some of us have. (I could never have eaten raw carcass of any sort!)

Michaelle Jean is neither a "fishing-for-votes polly" nor typical. Despite my own vegetarianiness, she's just scored points with me. (Weird that.)

Wow! I want this as a jigsaw puzzle! Do you have it in high res, Mr. M? Anyone know a company that will convert photos to a proper 1000 (or more) piece puzzle?

Fabulous array of colours and textures, but it is the structure that really makes it. Noripinhead, I fully agree: classical chinese landscape painting. Perhaps the paler colored blossoms in front, help to add to that fore and background in equal detail effect. The random looking stairs just stringing in and out of the shot really pin it.

Does JapanToday now own the rights to this photo?

Moderator: The photographer owns the rights.
