Piglet, I fear you are greatly over-simplifying the situation. Please understand that each of these 31 different communities has a unique situation. Some towns were mostly wiped out. Some, have quick rises in elevation and will be able to rebuild, with some adjustments to zoning.

    "Fukushima Stigma"

Is that actually true, Zichi, or just some rumours being floated about to sell trashy tabloids?

I hope the company gets slapped fast and hard for trying to punish workers based on faulty testing!!

A precedent must be set quickly and very visibly. False positives happen.

"The plight of those in Fukishima":

Interesting that the majority of the discussion on this thread focuses only on Fukushima, and forgets the whole rest of the coast: the tsunami victims, the devastated communities. I wonder if it's because of the influx of readers with little or no connection to Japan. If you're based in Europe or North America, the only way to feel connected to the story is to worry about whether the contamination could spread that far, and to wonder if a similar disaster could hit a reactor near you.

I wish there was more focus on the rebuilding, the need for buses to an from temporary house clusters, the need to have ports rebuilt, etc..

problems that afflicted the public payphone network that also failed on 11 March?

What problem was there with the payphones, other than the long line-ups? (I didn't need to use one, but everyone I saw had someone talking on it and a long, long line of people waiting their turn.) Assuming that they did work, this idea is brilliant.

Anyone here use a payphone on March 11th?

Ramzel, we did. And the fact that you didn't feel it is something that you should be thankful for.

Whom should you thank? The people who work for manufacturing firms, mainly. Weekday work was shifted to graveyard and weekends, robbing their families of normal time together (meaning these people missed out on weekends with friends) in order to spread out power consumption. Their sacrifice meant that you and I didn't suffer. Please realize that.

Hmmm. I think he's just going to the wrong events. I've been to many really amazing outdoor music events in this country. Just not big commercial bands for the most part.

"How much is she walking away with?"

Possibly 10 million dollars less than what she could be walking away with.

She called the board of directors "doofuses" for not having sold to MS back in 2007 while explaining how they *f--ked {her} over", in an interview with Fortune magazine, which would (could) violate the non-disparagement clause of her agreement.

Nice to see the use of "reportedly" and "apparently". Innocent until proven guilty, right?

It does seem like there's at least a small possiblity that the mother/daughter combo are trying to set him up and send him back to prison.

Lunchbox, that's really quite rude. Lots of local government members lost homes, familiy members, lives, as well. No need to be such a dick.

Cleo, To be fair, we got through the summer thanks to the sacrifices of many a factory family. Weekday work was shifted to graveyard and weekends, robbing families of normal time together (and friends time with other friends) in order to spread out consumption. I'm not saying we can't get by without nuclear or that we won't be able to in the future, just wanting to point out that we should be showing some love to the people who got us through this summer of setsuden. Their suffering meant we didn't have to.

Entertainment tax, please: to be levied on adult-only entertainments (so as not to impact families going to for a day out. Rather, it will hit: pachinko, clubs, R-rated and above films, ... Actually, I'd be happy with just a straight up Pachinko Tax.

So it cuts future health costs but increases the longevity of pension payout. Increased taxes per pack are balanced by a handful of people quitting, more not starting, and others making a pack last longer (by re-lighting a half smoked butt, smoking fewer per day, etc.)

All in all, I don't see a lot of financial benefit.

    Still a good idea.

To be most effective, price hikes need to be significant. The small but frequent increments over the past 10 years have been designed along the frog in the pot of water principle. Slap a big tax hike and kids will give up on getting started. People who have been toying with quitting with have an incentive to do it.

Wolfbiscuits, let me be the first on your list of people who quite due to a price hike. It was long ago in Canada. The price suddenly jumped by 20%. Suddenly a pack cost more than my hourly pay, and that crossed a mental barrier. I sat down with a calculator and worked out how much I'd save by stopping smoking, sat down with Auto Trader and figured out what I'd buy for myself after a year of quitting. (In reality, all the savings just went to beer, but I did quit the tabacco!)
