FireryRey, You should be published here. Your post was much richer, more interesting, meatier than the tripe so kindly provided by JT. (I failed to read the original essay (?) to the end though.)

Thanks for the link electric 2004, and for the explanation, Cleo. Makes sense. And as Heda says, there is NOTHING luxurious about the temporary housing conditions.

Are you just peeved, electric, that you need to wait for the popular, and dare I saw, standard size, because all those free-loading victims got in ahead of you?

Utrack: > On April 28th 2011 when multiple tornadoes ripped through 6 states on the east coast in the US and left kindling and death in it's wake the American Red Cross was there. Japan is not the only country with natural disasters.

Yes, Utrack, and that's part of what is so amazing. 260 million just for the one single disaster. And plenty more on top of it for more disasters, such as Joplin's tornados, Minot's floods, etc., etc., etc. A dollar a person wouldn't seem like much for a total years worth of donations (even though it would be), but the fact is, this is multiplied by the time after time after time the Americans dipped into their pockets for additional disasters. And that's damn impressive.

No gogogo, I wasn't there this year. My group gets about 10 invitations a year and I have to wait for my turn to come round again. When I went, I was also the only visible foreigner (at least that I noticed), but no one paid attention to me. The weather was also poor with low cloud cover so we didn't get some parts of the show, but there were motorcycles coming out of the back of hovering cargo helicopters and other such exciting stunts, to go with the loud, loud, loud excitement of the big ammunition.

" for wasting on flat TV sets."
Dude, have you seen the size of those temporary houses? What could you use besides flat screen? Can you even buy non-flat TVs anymore? Does someone still make cathode tube clunkers?

As for the "32 inch", citation needed.

gogogo, I've been to this even before as well. I think of it as the annual "use-up-before-the-use-by-date" stock clearance. And even though I'm a raging pacifist, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And for that I have no explanation. :-P

“You do not need to express gratitude to us,” Biden replied. “You’d do the same for us. Our only regret is that we could not do even more.”

    well-said, Mr. Biden.

This is about readiness. Matsumoto was talking about reconstruction.

And he was saying that devastated towns needed to come up with their own recovery ideas or they'd get no money. Which is highly insulting to towns that just lost all infrastructure including most of their town councillors.

    Ian Duncan:

Isn't this exactly what Ryu Matsumoto said, and he had to resign for saying it?

    No, It's not.

Who's she? He's been playing Sakamoto Ryoma in Jin, (and Jin II), and has won best supporting actor awards for this role in one of Japanese biggest hits in ages. Why no picture of him? Are all the employees of JT men? Don't forget to give some eye candy to you femaile readers.

No apology needed, but as DentShop says, this whole thing is just publicity for the restaurant. (not really news. original reporter must be a friend of the restauranteur.)

The huge difference between this and the Nigerian 401 scam is the motive of the victim. In the Nigerian scheme, people get sucked in by greed - the chance to get money for nothing. Ore ore (or grampa/grandson) scams hit the people who are willing to make a sacrifice to protect a loved one. Even more despicable in my book,

Thoughts are with friends working in the field up there today. Hope everyone got shifted to high ground smoothly.

Areas that used to be well above high tide, simply aren't anymore, so even for a small tsunami the recovery workers need to evacuate.

herefornow, how do you explain Walmart's take over of Seiyu? How did they do what Steele couldn't? Maybe Steele just failed? Remember, Steele doesn't make anything, They are just a takeover fund. Different ball game entirely.

FFS! We've been so close to eradication for so long. It seems to me that 20 years ago we were down to only 2 countries. Now Pakistan, a nuclear power FFS, is seeing an increase in cases?!?

Pretty impressive effort to minimize our power consumption, I must say! Congratulations people of Kanto. Big thanks especially to the companies who shifted factory hours to weekends and night shifts and in particular to those workers and their families for sacrificing normality for this extraordinary period of time, to help everyone out.

    Kudos!

PS: the government has been telling people To USE their airconditioners for at least the past 10 days.
