    Don't know whether you are aware or not - out of most of 700 in death row for drug related sentence, at least around 90% are foreigners. Why are there so many foreigners bringing drugs into Malaysia? Could it be because they, like you perhaps are ignorant enough to have under estimated the law enforcement agencies and the foreign embassies in Malaysia?

    Don't know if YOU know are aware or not but a vast number of those foreigners are Indonesian and many of them are from Aceh provence which was pretty much destroyed on the 26 December 2004 earthquake (more than 100,000 dead) which is a short boat trip across the Strait of Malacca from Malaysia. So why do people from one country with a death penalty for drug trafficing deal drugs with another country with the death panalty for drug trafficing? Pure economics! They are destitute and this is a quick way to get money to support themselves and/or families.

    I'm guessing they are not counting the years 1942 through 1945 where the Japanese population took one hell of a drop.

    Maybe not so important in the clothing business but, unfortuately, languages that use idiographs and/or a combination of idographs and phonetics do not lend themselves to the expression of new concepts. They tend to try to combine the idographs into something close to the idea or use them and phonetics to "pronounce" the foreign word but the word root is missing so it makes it hard to understand.

    mtwildman: Depends on the barnd is Islam. Malaysia and Indonesia claim to be tolerant if other religions and for the most part they are. The Fundementalist religous governments of Iran, Saudi Arabia etc. are not so tolerant. As for Islam not being the religion of peace, do you consider the cursades and the Spanish inquisition prime examples of christian peace?

    @Elbuda Mexicano: There was a bomb planted at the American Councilate the same night as the Bali club bombings but was a dud. The terrorists switched their targets from Embassies and councilates to commerical establishments because security was too tight around the government buildings. Last year there was a failed plot to bomb the Singapore Embasshy in Jakarta and shoot anyone and everyone who come out. There was a Easter plot to bomb a christian church on easter sunday too but it was discovered literally hours before it was to happen. Scarry!!!

    One thing missing from this history is the fact that Perry's primary goal was to open Japanese ports as safe havens for ships caught in storms or otherwise disabled. Until then any ship entering Japan was burned and the crew executed. Opening Japan to foreign trade was a by-product.

    A local woman told reporters, " was really surprised to see so many police here. This area's very quiet during the day, although it's usually bustling at night."

    But the call came in at 10:40 at night. The "Local Woman" has a strange sense of day and night.

    Elbuda Mexicano:

    You ahve to consider three things here:

    1. He is 73 so surviving 9 years is prison is not an easy task, and if he does he will be well on in years.
    2. As I said, he still has followers and can preach his hate whether in jail or not.
    3. The government showing SOME lenience helps abate some of the anger over jailing him in the first place.

    They are walking and tightrope here.

    It's very difficult for Indonesian courts to iompose really stiff sentences on the clerics here. This is the most populous muslim country on Earth. These guys are even allowed to hold religous teaching meetings in prison where they recruit new fundamentalists. The government is trying to stop this but meeting some resistance. Generally the Indonesians are pretty tolarent of other religions but people selling or buying or eating food during daylight hours during Ramadan can get arrested (2 months in prison and a stiff fine). Police exempt most hotel bars and restaurants from this and some bars catering to foreigners open after sundown during Ramadan but I think of the Bali bombings and tend to avoid them.

    @Patrick Smash:

    People don't understand how corrupt some of these countries really are. A lot of the drugs going through Singapore and Malaysia are permitted by high-ranking officials and police officers. Even some of their politicians make a killing off this trade

    I assume you have proof of this?

    May I also assume that you do not live in Japan or have ever been there for recreational purposes? There may be someone hanging around the corner from you too.
