Once, I mind-farted and forgot about the "no-tipping" system in Taxis. A Kyoto cab driver was laughing and waving his hand back and forth when I tried to tip him. It was a wonderful experience. Honesty in pricing is the best system.

Japan at drift. But, the upper ten percent always knows where to put its money.
Posted in: As things stand, Japan is adrift, anchored neither in East nor West and scoring badly on virtually all globalization criteria. Japan has been a mainly mute global player.

'Got some news for you: Most of us don't know how to do it anywhere else, either.
Posted in: There are plenty of people who want a change in lifestyle, even to quit their jobs and head into the countryside to start again, but it isn't part of Japan's corporate culture to just leave in mid-career. They don't know how to go about it.

Really, a great actor. You don't have to agree with the political subtext in "X" to see a fantastic leading man and talented director in action.

I met an elderly, very-obviously openly Gay Japanese guy on the Airport train to Nagoya a few years ago. He wasn't making a spectacle of himself, nor was he hiding anything. No one seemed to give a darn. The other passengers weren't shooing their kids away or anything. Osaka supposedly has a bunch of gay bars north of Umeda. Maybe Tohoku is a lot different from the rest of the country.

The fact that these Japanese Police officers are getting arrested for these screwy things (uninhabited panty fondling, shoe mirrors, up-skirts on the escalator, etc) shows their fellow police take a very dim view on bad cops. Other places, the offender would flash an ID, say "hey I'm on the job", and the investigating officers would let him go.

I once took Johnny Hillwalker's tour of Kyoto, and we went to Higashi Honganji. He said it was the "Vatican" for that branch of Buddhism. There weren't any bald kids, however.

I hope he gets a backer, rents a theater and shows the movie in Tokyo.
Posted in: It is essential that Japanese people see this film. They have the same reaction as an American audience, but they have the added emotion of shame.

It ain't the crows' fault! They thrive in the big city because that's where the food is. I saw a documentary showing how they locate food by sight: They can see right through those cheap, translucent garbage bags. They couldn't see through dark colored bags.
The crows know what neighborhoods have the best pickings, too.. and thousands of them make a circuit from Ueno, to the Kokyo, to the west Yamanote loop (Shinjuku and Shibuya) and back across the neighborhoods to Ueno Koen.
Eliminate the food source. Tighter controls on waste.
Posted in: The older, more clever crows never go near those traps. They are catching only young, stupid crows, not the breeders.
