It sorta was too good to be true and i can understand why budget approval has not been given. I don't think it would go down well in any country.

Burger King Japan's whoppers are horrible. I couldn't believe how different the meat tasted to what I was used to in New Zealand or even Hungry Jacks in Aus. To be fair Maccas was the same, the meat was horrible. Can someone confirm whether the patties are all beef? Cause I know some chains use a beef / pork mix which would explain the strange taste. The best burger I had was at Wendy's in Tokyo, the patties were imported from Aus and they tasted the same as back home.

madinagaijinboy, the figure was actually 380 BILLION not million. Anyway, I have played a fair bit of pachinko while in Japan and am currently researching pachinko in comparison with pokies (a type of Electronic Gaming Machine played in New Zealand). Initially the noise and smoke put you off but I think to truely understand why people enjoy it you have to find a machine you like, play and win on it (for me this is the Evangelion machine). It brings a certain level of satisfaction even if you know that overall you lose. I generally stick to 1 yen (ichipachi) pachinko these days as you can have the same fun for 1/4 of the cost. It you played standard 4 yen pachinko you could easily go through 1-2man in an hour. Another important thing to realise is that if you cash out at a TUC shop you're only getting about 62% of the value of your winnings. If you can find a parlour with decent prizes you'd be better off cashing for prizes as you then retain 100% of your winnings. All that aside, I think, as many people have pointed out there are many many life destroying negatives and as pachinko is officially classed as a "leisure" activity rather than a gamble there is insufficient regulation, problem gambling awareness and help. This combined with a deep sense of shame that Japanese can feel results in an extremely sad situation for some people.

That is not a pachinko machine, that is a slot machine. Pachinko works with balls, that has the 3 red buttons that you use to stop the reels spinning. Not pachinko.

Not unless it is relevant to the story. What purpose does it serve otherwise, other than to villify the named race of people and create/reinforce negative stereotypes. I'm pretty sure this is a widely accepted principle of journalisim.

Even Satan can appear as an angel of light, there are many religions that have some aspects of truth in them but are not the way to life.

I saw the article about jetstar's new low fares from Japan to Auckland via Gold Coast, I rang AirNZ to see if they would price match because I would rather fly AirNZ but they said "No". Guess that means I'll just fly JetStar to save money even though I hate JetStar's budget service.

Went a few times while was in Japan, got the legit deal Japanese girls not some gaijin like described above (shudder). Got out of there when it turned 6pm and everyone started smoking, not sure why that was, must be changing to night time zone or something? Need to get better at language so can communicate better. Anyone know what a typical conversation would go like in there?

Yeah the answer is not providing daycare in the pachinko palour, that would only encourage more mothers to play pachinko, probably not something you want to encourage.

Pretty sad, I have heard of the same sort of thing happening in New Zealand when mother's go and play the "pokies" (poker machines). I feel sorry for the mum and of course the child in this situation. It is really sad that her addiction got that bad that she didn't mind leaving her child in the car. Was this the first time or had it happened before? I don't think it is the pachinko palours responsibility but that being said the cause of this is probably problem gambling... it seems as though pachinko/slot halls are not really that regulated in Japan and its a bit of a grey area, due to this I wonder how much help is available for problem gamblers in Japan?

Sounds good but it will obviously take a bit longer going via Gold Coast. I would be interested to know what sort of time the journey would take compared with the 10hour 30mins odd time for Air NZ Tokyo to Auckland. I would also be interested in the price. What other airlines do people use to fly to NZ?

The meat at Japan mcdonalds, burger king tastes bad/strange compared with in NZ. The kfc is also quite weird but I am have accidentially ordered the hot and spicy so im not sure. My favourite western fast food in Japan is Wendy's, the burgers and chilli there are pretty much the same as NZ and really tasty. I have found them in Ikebukuro, Shibuya and Harajuku.
