Interesting that nobody has commented about the CEO being awarded a 71% pay increase. Such an increase is bound to cause more anger amongst workers who are looking for an increase more in line with inflation. As far as I can tell, it's not the pay increases that have stalled negotiations, it's the demands for job security.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the designs woven not painted? Beautiful designs - I'd love to see them larger.

Why does everyone assume that she knew she was carrying drugs? Isn't it possible that her story was true and she carried a bag for someone else thinking she was doing them a favour? Even if she did know, she was probably just a courier and the penalty is too harsh - it's the person she was carrying the drugs for that deserves the harshest penalty. That person probably walked away without suspicion - or wasn't even on the flight.

By when? I presume it's by 2017 since the next paragraph says that it's a six year strategy? Anyway, I hope this means that zero emission or lower emission cars become more affordable. I'd love to be driving a more efficient car, but the cost is a major issue. Hopefully it will lead to the manufacturers competing against each other, and that will help to drive innovation as well.

@utrack - both Caesium 134 and 137 produce beta radiation which will not travel far and can be easily blocked. There shouldn't be a reason to evacuate anyone unless the hotspot is really close to a house. As others have pointed out, if this is from the rain, it begs the question of where else there might be hotspots. It also goes some way to explaining the high levels of radioactive material in sewerage sludge. Of course, the "hotspot" ought to be removed.

@Cos - you sound jealous. His family lived in Australia for many years so I don't see why he shouldn't have an Ozzie passport. It's hard to tell anything from the short Japanese trailer I just saw, so will have to wait for a longer trailer or the movie.

@Borat - inappropriate and unnecessary.
I'll have to ask some of the young people I work with what they think about the Queen's visit. I don't think it's true to say that "republicanism" has waned, but I do think that people have realised that there's more important things to worry about than whether the Queen is the ceremonial head of state or not. Australian's were given an opportunity to make Australia a republic, but weren't given the option of being able to vote for the head of state. It's not strictly true to say that Australia became independent in 1901. Australia because a federated Commonwealth in 1901. True independence happened in 1986 with the Australia Act which prevented the UK from creating or changing laws in Australia. (http://www.aph.gov.au/library/pubs/chron/1999-2000/2000chr01.htm) The Queen is in Oz to open CHOGM. If people enjoy her visit and she enjoys her visit I don't see any harm in that. She and the UK government don't have any control over Australian laws anymore, so I don't personally see why any "fitful starts toward a republic" are necessary. Why change an independent system of government that already works?

It's a shame that nobody noticed the glow from the radium when walking by at night. It's also a shame that so many people choose to turn this into a conspiracy connected with the Daiichi plant. What it demonstrates is that nobody has done extensive street level testing for radioactivity for a long time, and things are being found which would otherwise have gone unnoticed. I wonder if I still have any watches with luminescent faces?

How sad that she had got herself into a state where she believed that it was ok to take someone else's baby. Glad though, that the baby and real mother were reunited without any great harm done. It sounds like Sugimoto needs help from a psychologist.

The instant dismissal of the information in this article by so many people making comments is ironic and sad. Humans can't pump billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere without affecting the balance of the system. The sooner we can all reduce our impact on the environment, the better for everyone.

Give it an SD card slot and make it portable. Frankly I think a headset like this is likely to be a more effective way of doing 3D than expensive TVs. I'd much rather use a headset than spend thousands buying a new large screen TV that I still have to wear glasses for if I want to watch 3D.

Hurray! Well, not really - this is an old, existing plant. But hurray if Japan gets serious about using geothermal. The fact that it has been largely ignored in a country that must have the most abundant geothermal resources in the world is astonishing. If the same investment had been made in geothermal as has been made in nuclear energy in Japan - probably even only a significant fraction - could have provided cheap energy without any radiation risk and no need for decommissioning concerns. The atomic plants will be a radiation hazard for generations to come - all of them.

why do we still talk about the dimensions of TVs in inches when the weight is given in kilos? The TVs sound good - althought right now I'd like the wireless antenna more than the TV!
