I lived in Europe for over 10 years..... Here's the list:

    1. Andechs Speziall Hell - A wonderful Lager made by monks in Bavaria.

    2. Grimbergen Blonde - Another good lager, but from Belgium.

    3. Ayinger JahrHundret - From a town I lived near, a very special beer.

    4. Erdinger Dunkel Weissen - A Dark wheat beer from: Bavaria

    5. Almost any beer that I don't have to pay for...... Those always taste good.

mokgohan: Um, if it was my daughter, that doctor would be in the ward in the basement of the hospital, with the chilled "individual" rooms.

If this were underwear theft, the J-Police would investigate it.

There shouldn't be any excuses. The guy has done this more than once, and needs to be thrown in jail.

So according to some, we should live with the "slight risk" of him reoffending, for the sake of keeping a doctor? Well, then what about the poor patients that are traumatized, what about their rights to privacy and self respect? Their trust in doctors is shattered, and we're supposed to look the other way? Don't think so.

Kind of similar to the way public toilets in parks are built here. Where the men go, is fairly visible to see the wee wee just hanging out.

And I agree, these guys need some psychiatric help, not jail time. The heavy hitters, or underwear thieves, they need penitentiary time.

NK is a bit desperate. Kim Jong "Mentally" Ill knows he can rattle the nuclear sabre and get the international community to cow tow EXCEPT the US won't follow. Those people are starving, but their military is fed with food that was meant for their starving masses.

I think the US/SK/JPN want China to at lest come to the table and say something. They have been reluctant to do so because they are the main route for anything going in. China gets a cut, and they do not want to lose that.

Could it have been a mine? Maybe, but accidental at best. Even that might be too much for the US, knowing the fall out if that were true.

Alpha: Cute story, but the hypothesis consists of two things (not really facts):

    1. the Chinese dispute the findings. Hmm, one ally of N. Korea, go figure. And the international team that looked at this had the US, South Korea, and Sweden. the Swedes are not really pro anything.

    2. And all of this detail analysis / hypothesis is done a a news reporter. Not an expert in munitions or navy ships / maneuvers.

So tell me Alpha, Is Michael Moore a truth teller in your world? Just curious. But for anyone who likes to take conjecture and turn it into a "fact", this may read like something that is true.

So an international team that investigated the sinking, producing a NK made torpedo is not enough for anyone? Hmm, go back and think some more.

Funny, I was in traffic as the protesters moved from Futenma to in front of Camp Butler/Foster. There were about 2000 people, and about half were utterly amazed as they looked around. Obviously from mainland, being of pale complexions, and totting their kids there.

Did I count the people? No, but counted a segment, then timed all of the people crossing 330 and 81. I was only there 10 minutes, and was there from start to finish. 17,000 people will take a bit longer than 10 minutes to walk across a busy road blocked by police.

And for those that doubt the economy without the Americans, take a look a the "period of reflection" that LTG Zillmer placed on all Americans stationed here in 2009. The mayor of Okinawa City, Tomon, was screaming to lift the ban because business was hurting so bad. If 2 weeks was bad, just wait until everyone would be gone.

Get rid of predatory bank loan practices, make qualifying for loans more difficult (basically lower risk through stringent qualifications), and enforcing some sort of regulations on countries that have little to none.

A country like Greece operates with a lot of government officials getting kickbacks. Slow spending and get them on track. Agree with the above.

Masswipe: I think it serves both purposes, but no one wants to hear of a re-militarized Japan. Look what happened the last time the world saw this.

The ad is a flat out lie. To wit:

"The new base would damage the safety and health of the people" - How is this possible, if the US is basically expanding a base that already exists, and moving flight operations to an area entirely over water? This is an improvement, whereby flights are no longer flying over populated areas.

"Last Sunday, tens of thousands of Okinawans gathered to protest the building of a new military base on their island" - No, it's an expansion of a current base. And the realistic number was about 50,000 people out of 1.4 Million. So if I do my math right (Badsey), this equates to a little under 5% of the population.

More on Okinawans protesting: More people showed up at the protest the Okinawans had AGAINST THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IN TOKYO (100,000 plus) concerning rewriting textbooks. The Japanese wanted to "play down or erase" the fact that Japanese soldiers were telling Okinawans to kill themselves or they would do it. This is fact (attested to by many Okinawans that were there and saw it happen), and lends credence to what the Okinawans see as being important. So nearly 10% show up for this, but less than 5% show up for a base relocation? Hmmm... (moderators, do not remove this, as it lends credence to the protest argument. if you do, then there is really no point in posting because you are slanting arguments)

"This island in Japan already devotes 20% of it's land to US bases" - But they leave out that what will be built is smaller than the base it will replace, and 3 more large bases will be given back, so the overall footprint will go down. Plus 8000 Marines would be relocated to Guam.

And for the comments about the US not allowing Japan to build their military, um, it's their constitution. Not the US. So Japan can change it and build up if they so desire. But they don't. Because they are able to keep the US here in Okinawa, away from Tokyo, and treat the people here like second class citizens. Just ask Okinawans how Japan treated them before the Americans got here.

    Penguin:

Plus, the US bases cause tons of trouble for Okinawa. There are young soldiers going around just causing loads of trouble.

Not even close. You troll the internet too much. US military crime is less than 1% of per capita crime. It does happen, but is very small. If you lived here, you would understand. But you don't.

As I stated on another area of JT, I'll paraphrase the military implications of not having forces here:

Does China and South korea want a re-armed Japan?

Would North Korea see this opportunity (once the US was gone) to wage a war?

Would China then try to overtake Taiwan once the US left?

Does the US see this as a way of sustaining an Asian presence and keeping their Asian policy status quo?

    Would Japan amend their constitution?

Would another country step up and say they want a large US presence to assist with defense and allow the US to stay in Asia?

There are a lot of scenarios that could play out. And there are a lot of questions, more than I listed. If there is a vacuum of military power in the region, one of Japan's adversaries will fill it. If anyone here thinks Japan can just be like Switzerland and vegan Cal-Berkley grads and hold hands, singing "kumbay-ya", then they really are lost. If you think China will sit by if the US left, well, you will learn Cantonese, very quickly.

5SpeedRacer5 at 10:27 AM JST - 23rd March "1. Dont design cars that speed out of control even if the cause is something as simple as car mat (something Toyota had already admitted to). 2. Dont lie about known safety defects for decades and then pretend like you are innocent (seized internal documents and past employee testimony point to this). 3. And most importantly, dont do all this in your largest market, especially if you are a foreign company."

Well, all of that above remains to be proven, doesn't it Elephunk. My points don't. Way to speculate rabidly. By the way, I guess you heard that another case of "runaway Toyota" was shown to be driver error yesterday. I think it was New York this time.

I don't know about proving this, but State Farm Insurance pointed out an alarming disparity in "sudden acceleration" issues with Toyota versus any other brand in 2007. Here's the link:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/08/AR2010020803830.html

There is a problem with Toyota, and they need to fix it.

Oh, and as for all of the lawsuit stuff? If Toyota lied on their 10K, then they should be sued. If you don't know what a 10K is, look it up.

Daijobu Oshirosan. You had stated that you were anti-base, so I responded as such. No harm, no foul 大ジョブ

I understand your points, and do think there is too much military here. A reduction is what would happen with the move of the air station, but off the island is not a bad option either as long as it makes sense militarily for both countries.

And the 5% issue that some people throw out there as the only impact. You obviously were not here when all Americans that have an ID card here were confined to their place of residence. The towns and cities were screaming about this, as the income lost was huge. hell, they even kicked some Americans off island because they couldn't go without Starbuck's (they deserved it, as it was a punitive order)..... My point is the GOJ is not helping the people of Okinawa, wether it be putting manufacturing jobs here or moving bases. It does not matter if it is LDP or DPJ or Communists.

Military commanders are only here for 2-3 years. They get their ticket punched and move on. Talks of this nature should be done by senior state department people, not local commanders.
