68 years old and working the night shift at a convenience store... sad way to go. I wondering what kind of training he had to deal with a situation like this.

I completely agree with Northlondon on this one. It's a shame that so many people out there try to mitigate the actions of a criminal just because they don't think drinking and driving is a big deal. The law is very clear in Japan.

Here is a suggestion for those who worry about being blamed for an accident just because they were drunk behind the wheel even when the accident wasn't caused by them. Don't break the law, don't use poor judgement and don't put yourself into that kind of situation. Take a taxi, call daiko, walk, stay at a hotel, have a friend pick you up, designate a sober driver before drinking or anything else you can think of... it's not as if there aren't options. If you drink and drive and anything happens, whether it's your fault or not, you can't play the victim if you've already broken the law.

Overlooked in all the desperate attempts at valid castigation of the Tea Party is that it is the Repubs who appear to most of us to be the party with the ideas and enthusiasm at the moment.

Party of ideas? HAHAHAHA! I needed a good laugh!

Actually, according to the CBC because he pleaded guilty to first degree murder he is not eligible for parole until he serves the 25 year sentence.

The faint hope clause is still law in Canada. It was killed when Harper prorogued parliament last year. The second bill to kill it has passed but won't be read into law until sometime this fall (unless there is an election). But that's beside the point. If he is declared a dangerous offender, which is most certainly is, he won't be eligible for parole until his 25 year sentence is completed and he can be kept in prison indefinitely.

I'm sorry, but killing those bears was the only choice. I'll guarantee that those criticizing the decision to do so either grew up in a city or a country without animals like this.

Enough is enough! NRA shame on you! When are you going to start fighting for child gun rights??? If these children had been armed they could have defended themselves against their mother and saved themselves. Everybody knows that if everybody had guns (yes even children) we'd be living in a safer world. (end sarcasm)

Is there a limit to the amount of gun violence we'll see? Doubt it...

You have to get out of Tokyo more if you think Enoshima is nice.

Sorry but it looks like someone used their keitai to take this picture. Try using a tripod next time unless you like out of focus shots. As for Enoshima... it's somewhere near the bottom of the list of nice beaches in Japan (unless the plan is to pick up chicks! :) )

That's not a tax bill! THIS is a tax bill! Looks like we might be treated with my more Croc movie so he can get out of the red! Looking forward to it!

all4faj, the case you present is correct IF it's premeditated. Very very very unlikely that anyone would get the death penalty in Japan for such a crime. In fact, I would argue that it is very unlikely someone would get 20 years in prison for such a crime in Japan.

Moderator: Stay on topic please. What the penalty for such a crime in Japan would be is, of course, irrelevant.

Give me a break. This was a crime of opportunity, not something premeditated. You wouldn't even get 20 years in Japan for a this crime. Other than the death penalty (which this crime wouldn't fit the criteria for) the toughest punishment you can get is life in prison which is 25 years in Japan.

WilliB, that's total BS mate. Bali is predominately Hindu and are very proud of this difference from other areas of Indonesia. Anyway, 20 years for murder seems like a pretty standard sentence anywhere in the world. Just think if this were a crime committed in Japan by a Japanese male against an Indonesian woman in the same circumstances?

BS detector is red lining right now. If the fire department get a report of fire of course they have to respond to it but they certainly have absolutely no right to come into your home without your permission on unsubstantiated reports with no evidence. Years ago I trained as a volunteer fireman in my hometown and there was a well established protocol for entering residences where no one was home but a fire was reported. You simply can't just started kicking in doors because you get a phone call for some anonymous caller claiming there is a fire. That argument aside, lets not forget that it was the POLICE who responded and entered this persons residence without any evidence of fire based on an anonymous call.

@knowitall... ever heard of the expression 'where there's smoke there's fire'? If the police and fire department can't tell when an apartment is on fire I think we all need to be a little worried.

Wow a new trick for the police to avoid actually doing real investigating. Every time they have suspicions about someone they can just phone in a fake fire alarm and then go and investigate the person without warrants. Don't firemen usually respond to fire alarms?

More parents need to teach their children how to avoid being victimized. They shouldn't be relying on schools and teachers to handle these problems. Most teachers I know in Japan really do care about their jobs and students but when you have hundreds of students passing through your classrooms its hard to monitor everything. I think that if this little girl felt the love of her family she would have been able to overcome the bullying problems at school.
