kinniku, I hardly think spending 5 years of your life on death row for a crime you didn't commit as 'a fair shake' at a trail. Was he compensated for that time spent in prison under false charges? Were those who committed perjury to convict him punished in any way?

How can an 89 year old man possibly defend himself against 60 year old charges? I can barely remember what I was doing last week... let alone be able to prove what I was doing.

“It is a race against time,” Charlotte Knobloch, a Holocaust survivor, said in a statement. “For survivors of the Shoa it is intolerable to watch how a suspected Nazi war criminal, who knew no mercy for his victims, seeks sympathy and compares his deportation to torture.” After rushing to judgment like that what kind of apology would ever be adequate if he is found not guilty for a second time?

Demjanjuk had been tried in Israel after accusations surfaced that he was the notorious Nazi guard “Ivan the Terrible” in Poland at the Treblinka death camp. He was found guilty in 1988 of war crimes and crimes against humanity, a conviction later overturned by the Israeli Supreme Court.

If he were truely guilty he would be rotting in an Israeli prison.

I tend to agree with Cleo on this one. I think for the most part the end justifies the means in Japan. There are a number of short comings but Japanese education is hardly the 3rd world caliber that many would have us believe.

Having studied in three different countries and worked in three different education 'systems' I can honestly say that I was most disappointed with universities in Japan. Jr/Sr high schools, for the most part, produce respectful and honest kids who are generally interested in continuing their studies, while many universities are far more concerned with the bottom line than they are educating their students.

If a society is a reflection of it's education system than I feel that Japan has done very well but there is always room for improvement.

Whether you like it or not, animals are resource that a nation has the right to responsibly harvest as a means for people to live and make a living. These are not endangered species, there are no Victorian style expeditions to the ends of the earth to capture these animals and furthermore, there is a market for seal products.

    Cleo to say

There's no legitimate reason to kill a single one of these animals. Not a single one.

ignorantly ignores an important part of Inuit tradition. Seal fur is prized for its warmth and being waterproof. Whether or not you agree with the commercialization of the seal fur trade and whether or not there are any 'legitimate' reasons for killing a seal seems to be a bit of an illogical emotional argument. The fur trade is older than Canada and until there is no demand it will continue to thrive.

These men are heroes. They are putting their lives on the line to defend our freedom and they deserve our respect. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply trying to score political points.

It is very rare that you have a Canadian citizen coming on a site like this and criticizing an American lose of life but as soon as it's a Canadian there is someone trying to score political points by attacking the Canadian commitment. Well, it's shameful coming from our allies.

Unilateral ceasefires aren't ceasefires at all. Israel's game is to always 'respond' to Hamas attacks. A childish 'they did it first' game. Of course, the 2 children Israeli soldiers shot the day after they called their 'ceasefire'...? Nah, nothing. Not important. I'm sick of the BS from both sides. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who supports either position is not using their brains.

    Noborito,

Sorry, I'm not wrong (especially since I never said the police determine guilt or innocence, that is for a court to decide). Police can and certainly do determine who is at fault in accidents when there is clearly one party responsible(otherwise every minor accident would end up in the court system). It would be pretty unbelievable to me that I could be in 2 separate accidents where the other driver was found 100% at fault if they aren't able to do this. As I said, at the scene of the second accident, the police asked me to write what kind of 'punishment' I saw fit for the other driver and there was a clearly marked section on the accident report form for exactly that purpose. Now, why do you suppose such a section would be included on the report if they do not determine fault? I don't know about the specifics about your accident but I would guess that you were found partly at fault precisely because you were 'parked' or 'stopped' on the side of the road as there are very few places where you can do this legally.

If you are ever in an accident INSIST that you were not moving at the time and I guarantee it will go a long way in helping your case ;)

BTW, does nobody else think it's strange that the driver hit the child with his rear tire while driving forward? Something very suspicious about that little fact.

He won't be sent to prosecutors and he won't be found guilty.

If he wasn't actually negligent, that is.

    SmithinJapan,

Did you know, according to law, that if you are in your car at a stop-light and someone crashes into you (while turning, from behind, or what have you) you automatically assume some of the blame simply for being in your car?

This is absolutely untrue. Do you even own a car in Japan? If you are stopped it is 100% the other drivers fault. I've had the misfortune of being hit from behind twice. Once while stopped at a red light and once while in stop and go traffic. In both cases the other drivers insurance not only paid for all of the damages but for all of the medical bills (one of the companies also called me personally on several occasions to check on my condition). Not only that but the police determined at the scene that the other drivers were completely at fault after interviewing both myself and the other drivers. There is even a section on the accident report where the victim can specifically demand certain compensation.

There are a lot of myths about Japanese road laws floating around out there. I suggest you do a bit of homework before making such false statements.

As for this case, my guess is that the driver will be released without incident, as happens in most cases. He won't be sent to prosecutors and he won't be found guilty.

While I wouldnt make the argument that companies base their entire decision on race, I have had the unpleasant experience of being told not to even bother filling out the forms because my bank does not issue cards to foreigners. There was no question of permanent residency, guarantors or anything else of the sort. This from a financial institute that I had been a customer of for over 8 years. I was offended enough to actually close the account at great inconvenience to me as I had to reroute salary payments and home bills etc...

Wow, how many times do I have to read stories like this before I disconnect the internet forever? I'm about to toss my computer into the river behind my house. Makes me sick, sick, sick... both individuals are total low-lifes... 21 and expecting her 3rd child? I really hope someone either educates this young woman or removes the children so they can grow up in a safe environment...
