this is a log due prize. The problem is that is was impossible to narrow it down to three guys, so basically the survivors got it, that's why it looks like a "retirement prize". If Mizoroki wouldn't have died, he should have got it instead of Heck. Japan is very strong in research development and especially catalysis and organometallics. And Shinjukuboy, you are wrong, at least regarding chemistry, Japan is one of the few places where you can still get funded for basic research.
Goddog, now the retirement age from national universities is 65. due to the senioral system in Japan, it's basically impossible to kick out a stubborn old senile dude, so they use the forced retirement. then you can teach at a private university, and actually they pay better (the basic salary at a national university is ridiculous)

I believe the nanotubes (Prof. Ijima) should have been awarded first, but that's a subjective view. Congrats! Sounds strange though that the student got it as well, usually is the Prof. that gets all the honors. There might be reasons I don't know, of course

working in a hazardous place, smoking is out of the question. some smokers used to puff outsides, near an emergency stairways, until one day some butts ignited and we had a very smoky and smelly fire. So now they have to go somewhere outside where there is a smoking area. it's pretty far and out in the cold/hot, so maybe it will help them quit?

well, you don't have to be an expert "Nobel guesser" to know that Prof. Yamanaka is a favorite. All the best to him, he certainly deserves it. By the way, the phone call is actually made by the president of the Nobel foundation (and Swedish academy). and he doesn't really have that much of a Scandinavian accent

I want to correct the author about Todai. There is a strong tendency towards internationalization recently: scholarships and programs for foreign students; recruiting foreign faculty or Japanese with strong background abroad; many short-term programs for visiting scholars; making English compulsory for graduate classes, and for the graduation thesis/defense, etc. Of course, it's a Japanese pace for this change, but I've been here for a long time and I can tell for sure that things are changing.

apart from the fact that she has a degree in commercial science from Meiji University (how about yourself, Mike?), the bottom line is that she's ridiculously hot and I would exchange her any time with the PhDs I'm surrounded by :) But I still wait for a Japanese actress who's not a former model, singer, talento or announcer

It's funny that when Romania tried to address the gypsy problem, they were savagely attacked by EU on grounds of human rights. Now that Romania is in EU and the gypsies can roam free, basically the human rights campaigners say "take them back and do something".

combinibento, they revolted for more serious reasons recently, just to be violently repressed. it is not that the general public likes or agrees with these practices (I have Iranian friends and I know their opinion), it's just they are afraid of their "enlighten" government.

we did a BBQ on a large veranda, the top floor of the building. we kept the smoke and the noise low, but nevertheless in no time the neighbors called the owner and a big circus followed. that was downtown Tokyo, I hoped Hokkaido is better, but apparently I'm wrong. And dude, if you're growing week in your place, keep a low profile!
