    As Pukey said, the garden is very nice, and usually not very crowded. Beautiful and quiet in the middle of Tokyo (Todai haters, you should know that it's administered by the School of Science :) My students went there Saturday afternoon, but despite the 35 degrees or so, there was a 2 hours queue, mostly old people that saw the news on TV. I'm curious if everybody survived, good that flower is in bloom only for 2 days (I thought it was 17 years though)

    Wanderlust, a guy at a bank for example has 10 times a higher salary by moving money from one place to another, or speculating on the stock market, than the guy who actually discovers the new stuff that all our modern lives are based on (the Todai was just an example I know firsthand; replace it with Harvard or NASA or Toyota). "developing products that make money for a company". exactly my point: the guy that actually develops the product (researchers, engineers) earn much less than the executives who just talk and vote their salaries, as Frungy said

    and a Todai masters graduate who works as an engineer at these makers barely makes 200,000 yen a month, and patiently waits for the years to pass under the amakudari system. an assistant professor at the same Todai (PhD, leading a group of 10 people, and making interesting research) works an average of 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for something around 300,000 a month.

    timborder, usually they say it's not recommended to work with weights before 16. these guys are probably from a lower weight class, and they are well conditioned, even if more muscle mass won't do them bad. however, bodybuilding became a freak show of oversized, drugs-pumped huge muscles, I hope in time it will come back to the standards of proportion and definition, and the steroids will be severely banned and punished

    Unfortunately, yellow carding some fellows in front of the combini does not solve the main problem: truck drivers and taxi drivers. Where I live, at night there are always long lines of taxis idling, some in target spots waiting for customers, some in quiet places for a good rest. And when waiting at the traffic stop before my home late at night, the cars running consist of 80-90% taxis (expected), but most of them without customers (disturbing)

    Tatanka, I beg to differ. I came to Japan when I was 20. the deal was: learn level 1 Japanese in one year, to be able to enter and study at a Japanese university. And after one year I could speak, read, and write enough to survive all the exams in uni. I'm European, and I can tell you those kanjis were a nightmare, but my career developed very well because of that initial effort

    dreamland, some people have a PhD, work as assistant prof at a top university long hours 6 days a week and still don't make much more than that...

    and I know plenty of people who commute more than one hour under these conditions. horrible way to start your day, the stress, suicidal tendencies, sudden bursts make more sense now. NeoJamal, usually the train that comes after 3 mins is similarly crowded. and 3 mins may be 1 min late for work, and you have to take all the crap for that

    Mikanojo, exactly what I was trying to suggest. I don't like too much the rice in the average bento, but when my friend from Niigata brings some quality (and expensive) rice, there's a huge difference.
