this stir about the book and the movie is actually great news for the foreign guys around, since the scoring chances around those Roppongi bars will increase considerably. I have no problem whatsoever with the stereotype: "hot Japanese girl + average, nerdy Gaijin", let it bloom

I may be old fashioned, but somehow the idea of a 16 years old getting married with a 40 years old sounds uneasy to me. but that's their business and they seem to have a happy marriage, so all the best

LoveUSA, many gays work out and don't look herbivorous at all

Moderator: Readers, a discussion of gays is not relevant to this topic.

Dead Man is also one of my favorite Depp's movies. but you have to enjoy Jirmush's weird style to like it

it's end of fiscal/academic year. you have to finish lots of stuff for the current year, and prepare lots of stuff for the next year. at managerial level it's crazy busy, and young lads just don't keep up. used to just be around pretending working, when pressurized with work, they crash. the solution in Japan is: "work longer hours". but of course, if they can't do the work, longer hours don't really help, and you end up with a vicious circle. and all of this on the gloomy background of the Japanese corporate culture described by the above posters

I think it' also a Tokyo or big city thing, people are way colder here than in Fukuoka or Hokkaido for example. Interestingly, I've been in Tokyo for 11 years now, and I have about 4-5 very close friends. All foreigners. I speak fluent Japanese, I went to school in Japan, I went with them to countless parties, drinking, excursions, etc., but still something doesn't click. While I completely agree with Shaolin, and I tried really hard, still there are sme barriers I couldn't cross.

the hole point of a "blacklist circulating among graduates" is that's a list based more on gossip than verified facts. but probably most of them are true, to some extent

paulinusa, if you go skiing in Japan, you can see girls in miniskirts and/or high heels struggling to get from the bus/car/train to the hotel. work in Tokyo sucks, at both ends of the social ladder. same with most of the big cities in the world. but I believe anybody has a choice. and so few people take advantage of that

Love, you see, I had this friend of mine, he was a foreign student like me, and he was crazy about motorcycles. He put all his savings from scholarship and part time job into a Hayabusa, and one night, he tried the power of the bike. He got caught, the speed was almost 200 km/h on a 50 road, he had to quit school and go back home, with police record and all. His life was pretty messed up, he gave up uni and started all kinda jobs, from a bright future student in Japan he became a low paid worker in a poor country

all you have to do is sign up with a bike club, pay a fee and go riding on the circuit, it's really great and perfectly legal (I'm a speed freak myself)

LoveUSA, you are completely missing the point here. the heroes are on the circuit, the idiots that endanger the public roads are not "man". if he wants to show he's cool, let him show it with the real guys on the circuit. otherwise, he's just a loser who is desperately trying to get some attention

yes, he is cool and brave if he does it on one of the many race circuits in Japan, you can use them for a certain fee. he's a complete and dangerous idiot for doing it on a public road (and yes I'm a rider and I like speed)

I'm doomed, I'm a chemist, I won't be able to use the train anymore to come back from work... seriously now, I hope this is just a test for the detector, I can't believe that anybody really thinks about installing it to all the ticket gates in Tokyo
