I always smile the line of maniacs with tripods on the bridge near Ochanomizu station (I live near there). well, I like skiing, they like photos, no big deal. as long as they don't disturb others (like the dude in this story)

jason, I agree with you, we decided to quit going skiing by car and use train nowadays. it gets really dangerous when your exhausted after waking up at 5-6 am, then skiing all day long

the bike rental is cool, and it's by no means a new idea
I have mixed feeling about the pet rental. I really enjoy going out with my friend and its dog, so in a sense it may be a similar thing. I'm a dog lover and I would love one for myself, but my work schedule and housing issues are incompatible with the idea. so I guess it's for this type of people

Browny, I don't watch TV too much, but the few CMs I know on the topic show people socializing and having fun while drinking. which I don't find so outrageous. maybe if you show me a CM with a lonely, depressed, suicidal salaryman with a bottle of vodka and the subtitle "my only friend", I will be convinced :)
Sarge, I was talking about 25 years single malts (I needed it for an occasion, I usually drink the cheap Macallan or Bowmore). And while I agree about Suntory beer, the whisky is not bad. I actually like Yamazaki 12 years (18 years too expensive)

so Browny, in your country they advertise whisky in CMs with a poison mark or what?
I'm not a specialist in whisky, but I was appalled how expensive the good Japanese whisky is. I was looking for a 25 years old single malts, and while respectable foreign whiskies were on the 40-50,000 yen range, Hibiki, Yamazaki, Hakushu were all in the 100,000 yen range
Finally, I must remind Koyuki that highball whisky goes very well with chocolate salty balls

Goodguy, apparently her dad had 16 racehorses and a French wife :) But you are not right about talent: she was a child kawaii idol, then a gravure idol = big talent (actress, singer, you name it)

well, since her dad died when she was still young, I thought there was some French influence at home. of course, I may be wrong. and there was some research about aptitudes of mixed children, but as far as I know it was inconclusive. and Jung's work also suggested some related things

talking about stereotypes: you have a cute child idol, turned gravure idol, made to believe she can act, holding a teddy-bear and a big camera on an airport by the way, it shouldn't be that hard for her to learn Spanish, since she is half French

because there are many levels of hostess clubs, with many levels of pay, service and quality. there are seedy places where touching and a little more is allowed, there are high class places where customers spend more than 1 million a evening and their are delicately kicked out if they do anything inappropriate. a friend of mine was doing her PhD at a famous uni in Tokyo, and she was hostessing at a club where she didn't even pour drinks, just talk with the clients. but I also know some girls that do much more than that, in really seedy places.
