wow, I'll take Sharon, thanks :) Many Taiwanese go by their "American name". they basically get a nickname usually during the English classes, then they stick with it.

perfectly agree, lest point 1. we went to the countryside (mountains in Ngano, Gunma, Niigata) and ocean side (Izu), and the roads and scenery was absolutely gorgeous

I think this "car" is considered the same class as a moped in Japan (less than 50 cc engine). and thereof the speed limit should be 30 km/h, and the safety regulations pretty lax

TokyoHustla, you beat me to it. If she's on a student visa (which I assume she is, since she is a student), then she must have a working permit. However, the working permit clearly states that entertainment-related jobs (in bars, hostess, etc) are forbidden. But I'm not sure what's the legal status of this maid thing

Maria, Warabi city, I know that area very well. I was afraid of walking alone late at night that area (I'm a guy), full of yakuza and drunks. I don't blame the girl, but taking into account the circumstances, I say the police must be careful about this. The guy may be a scumbag, or he may just be a victim (see the fake groping accusations and so)

to detail josebove's post, to apply for a faculty position (is science, but I've heard humanities is similar) in Japan you usually need: (1) CV (2) publication list + accolades (3) recommendation letter(s) (4) an essay describing your previous work (5) a research proposal. I guess it's fairly easy to check points (2) and (3), and it's difficult to fake (4) and (5) in a way that actually makes sense
