but how did he purchase the elements? I need special approval to buy them, and I'm a researcher, so I don't think he found them in the closest Ikea

Since I just returned from a business trip in Shanghai, I still wonder how comes I'm still alive. Those taxi drivers are completely insane! And beware the illegal taxis. I didn't have such a bad experience in Turkey (not Istanbul though). The worst thieves are for sure the Greek taxi drivers (3 years ago, hopefully things changed). They didn't want to take us unless we could find other passenger(s) for the same route, to charge twice/trice for the same meter. The locals told us that's the custom... We almost didn't make to the airport!

gogogo, even a non-specialist glance (and of course specialist opinion) all converge to the obvious fact that the shinkansen technology was stolen from Japan (initially bought, minor revisions made, then boasted as "Chinese super train"), and now they suffer from the issues associated with technology shortcuts: maintenance, compatibility, trained stuff, further developments.

ambrosia, we fail (graduate) students sometimes. they can extend their curriculum for maximum one year, then they are expelled. there are some ways of extending the period for medical reasons. you know, despite the widespread belief, not everybody graduates

so if I tweet: "I rode my bicycle while holding an umbrella", would I get suspended? how about "I forgot to turn on the light of my bike yesterday night"?

”The reason this happens is because most J employees have no backbone. If people actually stood and spoke out for a change, things just 'might' start to eventually change”

This is of course how we, westerners, thing about it. In Japan, as Miamum said, it simply does not work. You don't get fired, you just get more humiliated and downgraded to menial jobs.

I agree with a form a punishment for being late, etc., but this should be done "adults way": a cut in pay, proportional with the offense. humiliation leads to all kind of problems, worsening the morale of the employers and ending up boosting those numbers for depression and suicide

wow, I had a great time in Gold Coast last year, and everything seemed peaceful and safe. It's a very sad state of affairs, I wanted to go again, but maybe I'll wait until things cool down

    "The long-awaited, " by whom?

"the keywords “expansive” and “innovative” in mind." try "junk food"

"the stylish new design will shift the image of McDonald’s in a more cosmopolitan direction." how about new and better quality of food?

But nevertheless of my ranting, McDonald's sells great and except aggressive advertising they don't really need to change anything to cash in. unfortunately

in my job (research), Macs are really popular, because of reliability and speed mostly. Me and my students are satisfied, and I would never go back to PC. My wife bough a PC recently, but she still keeps on using my Mac most of the time. Reason: easier to use, faster and doesn't freeze. The only bad thing is that for some reason, we are using MS Office, and this guy sometimes freezes or gets slow

"Why are tabloids like News of the World so eager to exploit them anyway?"

because that's what the public wants. no interest in this kind of stories = no sales = no business = no exploitation

this hole story reminds me of Feynman working physics in the evenings in his favorite strip parlor. and testifying for the parlor when "concerned" citizens sued the owners for "corrupting the society values". Steve, do you know that in the Middle Ages, the Church tolerated prostitution as a compromise in keeping the lust evolving to rape, violence, etc?

well, I work their and we don't pass anyone, and not everybody graduates. at least in my department (science). but I do agree about the fact that paying tuition, not them, but their parents believe in the customer thing, decreasing their sense of responsibility and competition. which is a serious problem, especially for graduate students.

Jonathan, probably an electromagnetic induced one. Nevertheless, the statement that a magnetic field opens the airwaves and stiffens the palate is just populist belief not supported by scientific research. same with the magnetic water, but at least that belief led to some interesting discoveries
