I don't think it's really a new thing, there was a song called "Tokyo Sabaku" = "Desert Tokyo". My girlfriend, who is from south, is also shocked how cold is the society in Tokyo. it probably has to do with overwork and over-convenience of everything. I remember myself getting philosophical when I lost my bank card, and they put me in front of a machine that did all the paperwork. Including me signing and submitting the necessary documents

well, in a country where me and my girlfriend were asked to say we're engaged and to mention the planned date for the wedding by the housing agent (otherwise the paperwork becomes "difficult"), and the office of the University where I work discontinued my rent allowance because they can't fill the paperwork for two unmarried people, both having income and living together, there is no wonder for me that having different surnames after marriage is a bureaucratic utopia

Miamum, the business is flourishing. I don't know about the small sleazy parlors, but the luxury hostess bars in Ginza are doing great. I don't think that girl has a case here, since she was paid by the rules in the contract she signed: deductions for being late, etc. However, the mama-san may have breached some laws with the contract itself, since I assume there are some regulations about these contracts

I agree with Sarge, since she is one of the top paid tarento for advertisements, and she decided to the "first ever" campaign for the demonic alcohol, why not start with Yebisu or something drinkable?

it's not about being historically-correct, which is more or less impossible, but about being politically-correct. that's the big obsession nowadays

when you have restriction of 50 km/h in the city and 80 km/h on the highway, it doesn't really worth to buy a fast bike in Japan. except circuits, but those are far. I have a Yamaha 250cc, and it's perfect for Tokyo.

for an insider's point of view, read Feynman's memories. a bit technical, but lots of interesting stuff. He was the scientist in the panel that evaluated the causes of the accident, and he proved the O-ring fault using a glass of ice water

of course, it may also be a prank to get into the news. but better safe than sorry, the bullying issue must be investigated and addressed. both the bully, but also together with ways to deal with hypersensitive kids, or with kids lacking social skills. and not only in Shiga

you can wear a kimono, but as a rule, you should avoid being more "medatsu" than the bride/groom. I had a similar problem recently, I am used with western-style weddings in Japan, but I was invited to a traditional Japanese wedding. I had a hard tme researching, because most of my friends and coworkers never attended one, and had no idea about the rules
