Wish it was me. Would love to visit Kenya and see some of the Masai Mara.

And where are the police? Hitting kids is assault. These "caregivers" should be shackled and paraded in front of the media (full face). Use shame as weapon and seriously drop them in it. Let everybody see whose mom/sister/wife/girlfriend, etc. has been laying into defenseless children (sorry infants). Also some details on where these women live would be useful.

Seriously, these two scumbags should be down the cells learning the secret art of telephone book usage. The nursery and the city should also be on the hook for letting this sorry state of affairs go on for so long.

Then again, I won't hold my breath.

Not going to get into a long spiel, however, here are a couple of random thoughts.

    • The reference to "excess meat" being sold on the market is interesting. Indeed, if Japan's whaling were indeed "scientific," then meat would not be sold for human consumption. Moreover, to stamp out this sale of whale meat, perhaps Japan should be made to only kill skinny whales (lol).

    • Who would want to eat an animal that effectively sits at the top of the food chain? Can you imagine how much chemical residue is in whale meat?

    • Japan has proven again and again that it cannot be trusted vis-a-vis the management of fishery/whale resources. Whether it was the deceitful practices of Japan vis-a-vis Southern Bluefin Tuna stocks, or whether it is Japan's past employment of drift-nets, the country just does not have a track record that instills confidence. As such, a resumption of Japanese commercial whaling would result in a holocaust for these creatures.

Japanese are too small, too small, too delicate

So what do you suggest? A racially-based league system for the Winter Olympics? Perhaps we could have the Northern Europeans Aryans in a super league, along with the Anglo-Saxon-dominated North Americans and the far-flung outposts of empire.

Meanwhile, the Japanese and others (those who eat too much rice for breakfast) could battle it out in a second division, focusing on sports they are good at like ice skating and short track?

For some reason I don't think this would work....

Evgeni Plushenko has complained bitterly about the results of the men’s competition, where the Russian finished second to American Evan Lysacek despite being the only top contender to land a clean quadruple jump.

Not American, and I have no real axes to grind. That being said, however, I don't really go in for competitors who whine when they lose. This Russian chappy was in the media before the event trying to wind up his American rival over the issue of how many times he could or could not pirouette. Now after the event, this same Russian chappy is whining because he lost. My advice is simple, get over it and grow up.

If Japan wants to live up to the hype that is generated by its domestic media, then it needs to take a good long look at its sporting programs. It went well in figure skating because domestic competition here in Japan for Olympic berths is very tough. It also picked up 3 skating medals which should be applauded. The other sports, however, sxcked seriously. Indeed, there were a number of events in which Japan was unable to field competitors because the standards in this country are so far below those of Olympic competition. Furthermore, although us foreign folks tend to take the Japanese media and their claims of Olympic supremacy with a large grain of salt, I wonder how the locals handle all this hyperbole? Indeed, if the locals are really that upset with their performance, then questions should be asked in the Diet, and spring cleaning conducted on mass at the JOC. Moreover, if Japan wants to truly compete on the world stage, then something needs to be done to increase the number of people who are playing these sports here in Japan. Only then will domestic competition result in competitors who are truly world class.

Served in the (Australian) army for about 15 years as an infantry officer, including 2 years and 4 months on exchange to the US Army (was actually supposed to be a lot shorter but I got dragged off to the Gulf War). Back then (the 80s and the 90s), I don't really remember what the official policy was regarding gays. At the same time, however, people around me used to turn a blind eye to the private lives of their comrades. Furthermore, during my time in the US, one of the senior NCOs under my command was halfway out the cupboard in terms of his sexuality. My attitude was basically one of non-interest. The chap in question was a very good soldier, and that was good enough for me (and the officer to whom I reported). Specifically, soldiers are soldiers, and as long as they maintain good order and discipline there is no reason that they should be discriminated against based on their sexual preferences, their beliefs, etc. Furthermore, the issue of unit cohesion is a bit of a red herring. Being in close proximity to female soldiers can cause just as much of a headache as if you have low-profile gays in a unit. Indeed, as long as soldiers are able to separate out their personal/professional lives, I don't see any reason why sexuality should be an issue.

Big difference between real quality and jmedia hyped quality

That comment hits the nail right on the head. Japan, unlike other countries, does not have the player skills to back up some of the outlandish claims that are made in the media.

Going to be in the minority here, but I actually have enjoyed some of the curling with the tactics and accuracy involved.

On the other hand, I would be quite happy if some of the other events disappeared. For example, I don't see the point of the snowboard half pipe event (maybe I am getting old). I suppose if all of the competitors were equally proficient, it might be more of a spectacle. However, at the current Olympics about have of the entrants spent more time on their bxtts than on their feet. On a more general note, I will the coverage of sports available on Japanese TV was a little more diverse. There are only so many replays you can watch before you switch off.

Mr. Toyota has a clear choice, either he fronts up to these hearings and rules with the punches or the media declares open season on Toyota. Furthermore, as somebody pointed out, even if he goes to the US, the meetings themselves will be brutal as both sides of US politics look to one-up each other vis-a-vis their "concern" for the US consumer.

Finally, the worst thing Toyota could do is to try and bow and scrape its way out of this problem. Such tactics might work in Japan, but they will make things worse in the US.

Just to echo the sentiments of some other posters, it is good to know that there are people who are willing to risk their own lives when S hits the F. This young chap should be congratulated for having the moral fortitude to act.

Now with regard to the young lady, she needs to take a long hard look at herself.

And on the same day that the other chap saved the women from the train tracks. Where do you start?

What an absolutely atrocious act, 4 onto 1. If the victim dies as a result of this, these "kids" should be sent down for life. Even if the victim recovers, each and every boy who attacked him should go down for 10 years, hard labor.

And now we turn to the neighbors? Talk about gutless. Filling somebody in like this would make a hell of racket, the question is why didn't somebody intervene? Indeed, the cops might consider some charges for the neighbors. What about accessory after the fact? What an absolute disgrace!!!! (this one has really raised my blood pressure)

*He later opposed the surge that won the war in Iraq. *

The war in Iraq has been won? That is news to me. If this is indeed the case then why aren't all the troops back from Iraq? Surge or no surge, the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan are not going to be won by blowhards such as Cheney, who along with his lapdogs should have been put up against the wall for putting the invasion into Iraq with not enough resources. Remember "Eric was Right."

Don't get me wrong, I am far from being a tree-hugging hippie and indeed I have a great deal of admiration for people who served with distinction (Colin Powell) and those who continue to do so. However, Dick Cheney just rubs me the wrong way. The guy has a yellow streak a mile wide up his back, however, he continues to wrap himself in the flag. What a joke.

Saw this one on the news this morning (before NHK went into Vancouver overdrive). It was a real shocker with one of the vehicles destroyed to the point of non-recognition. Don't know who was to blame (yet), but one or both of these vehicles must have been traveling rather fast.

What a tragedy. Off for the weekend with some university friends, and down the morgue on a Sunday evening. What a complete and absolute waste.

And why don't the four years of Cheney's service as Secretary of Defence (under Bush Sr) count as service to one's country?

Sitting behind a desk and speaking shxt, and sitting in a foxhole being in the shxt are too totally different propositions. Then again, both realistically and figuratively, perhaps the Dickster just didn't have the heart for it, despite being rather good at shooting hunting buddies.

Cheney said President Barack Obama wasn’t taking the al-Qaida threat seriously

This from a man who received multiple deferrals in order to chicken out of his own military service. More so that GW (who actually put on a uniform), Cheney has always pxssed me off because when it was his time to serve, he had more important things to do. Nevertheless, this does not stop him from being a "real" patriot and wrapping himself in the flag. What a goose.

I must admit that I have been a live witness to a number of horrific incidents over the years, everything from car accidents to combat-related deaths. That being said, however, I have always felt a sense of revulsion when witnessing "news stories" on TV that feature some poor person dying in front of the camera, whether it is a sports-accident or a lynching. I also find the faux concern of talking heads on TV to be really irritating.

polypals should be grateful for the brave U.S. Marines and Afghan troops who are risking their lives to fight the Taliban low-lifes who would torture and kill him/her without hesitation or remorse.

Give it a rest, the "wrap myself in the flag" argument is well past its use-by date. While I respect the DFs on the ground that have to do the dirty work, setting these people up as deities is not right. As I said yesterday, its a job, get over it. Some of them will not come out of this alive, however, them is the breaks.

Actually, what really worries me about this "attack" and many of the others is the media build-up. Last week we had the intro, yesterday we had the warm up and today we have the main event. Talk about war by media proxy. Instead of worrying about getting the media on-side, the folks in the head-shed should be more worried about getting the grunts on the ground to get this job done.
