Smartacus - My comment was actually about Japanese people as consumers of a product, the product in this case being the information as it is being projected by these celebrities in their role as pitchmen for a particular product or service. Indeed, just the sheer volume of these events indicates that marketing as a technique (in Japan) has yet to think outside or beyond this boxed conceptualization of how a message should be projected to consumers. On the other hand, my comment had nothing to do with an ethnocentric bias or a projection of my own values regarding what might be funny/interesting/amusing.

Rather a difficult question. Taking the example of these product/industry promotion events, however, perhaps a lot of readers don't understand that such events represent a staple in the rather limited range of tools that are open to company's in this country to create a buzz about their product or service.

Furthermore, the whole exercise of having a celebrity pitch a product (or a movie) is sometimes undone by the inane comments put forward by such celebrities regarding matters that are totally irrelevant to the product (or movie) that they have been employed approach.

Finally, I think many readers on JT have been brought up outside Japan. As such, their critical faculties have not be lobotomized by the Japanese education system. As such, as self-thinking individuals, the JT readership is not so gullible as the locals vis-a-vis their acceptance of such "stories."

The other day we were getting ready for "the attack." Now we are "cutting off escape" roots. God I hate this arm-chair strategic analysis that is churned out ad-nauseum by press pool journalists. Just get on with the job, bring the enemy to bear, and ELIMINATE THEM.

We must all be grateful for these brave people who put their lives on the line to protect us from the scumbags who would torture and kill us without hesitation or remorse.

It's a job son, get over it.

Don't pussyfoot around. Based on what is written here, this is murder, and it should be reported as such.

Then again, the saddest thing about all this is that it is not an isolated event.

Combination of both. Certain people were out to get him, but he certainly didn't help his own cause. There is also the issue of perspective. Remember than another wrestler was involved in a car accident that resulted in somebody dying, however, he was just slapped on the wrist. As far as I know Asashoryu didn't kill anybody (beaten yes, but killed no), however, he was still shown the door.

What about giving them some real consequences for their crime like community service or something.

Be better off to bang them up with some time in juvenile detention. Society needs to stop pampering these "kids." They are 15 years old and they should take responsibility for their actions. I just wish somebody would force a case like this to trial. Perhaps the business in question should demand that these girls get their day in court. After that the business can pursue the parents through civil proceedings. Kick up a stink and really drop this delinquents in it.

YuriOtani - Call me old-fashioned, but back in the day thieves in this county (depending on the feudal domain) used to get their crimes tattooed on their face. Indeed, using such methods to fight crime among the young might lead to a dramatic fall in crime rates.

Great joke this one. Hope the Prosecutor's Office also gets a laugh when they stick these kids with a criminal record that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Have to agree with some of other posters here. Either this is suspicious or the woman in question should be cited for stupidity resulting in death. Nobody in their right mind leaves a 2 year old unattended. Furthermore, it is important to note that the dogs are described as "some dogs," not necessarily belonging to the family.

Would have to agree with USN on this one, reading the headline, you would think that they had arrested a member of the General Staff or something. The chap is just a colonel for CS.

By the way, with this on your service record I reckon this chap might just get passed over at his next promotion board.

Murderers in the military! Who woulda thunk it!

    Wonderful comment this one.

Cleo, although I respect your dietary choices, this thread is not the place to espouse your brand of vegetarian evangelicalism. Indeed, like dogs, human beings are omnivores. Furthermore, if this was not the case, then we would all have calluses on our knees.

Got to love the French, the Anglo world saves them twice in the last 100 years and they still have their own unique outlook on the World. Could somebody pass me another Freedom Fry?

Oh the outrage (not). This guy was just a kiddie fiddler in the making who got caught. By the way, I would also like to that the local cultural center for chipping in and meeting this chap's IT needs (lol).

A quick note on dog prices, using as an example one of our dogs (a golden retriever):

From a backyard breeder in Japan, expect to pay 90,000 yen for a dog of fuzzy parentage. You might get a pedigree certificate, you might not. Actually, it depends very much on the breeder. There are some good dogs around (by luck rather than design), that are free from hip, joint problems. Don't even ask for cardiogram or a eye clearance.

From a pet shop in Japan, expect to pay 150,000 to 200,000. Price will go down as the dog gets bigger (no longer cute). Then again, the longer the little doggy stays in the window, the higher the possibility of mental issues. You will see a Japan Kennel Club pedigree, and all dogs supposedly get a check up from the vet. However, this is nothing that you could hold up in a court of law. Again, no hip, heart, shoulder or eye clearances.

Reputable Breeder (A wish list based on the documentation I generate every time our dog gives birth - sorry don't sell to the public): Approximately 16 x-rays per puppy (knees, hips, shoulders, anything with a bone in it), cardiograms (no heart problems), eye clearances from a specialist, complete blood work, hip clearances from the two major certifying bodies (OFA/Pen-Hip), dental clearances, etc.

There has to be some sense of perspective. You cannot just single people out by their nationality or race. If the Japanese press wants to wax lyrical about "Brazilians" or "Black people," then they should be calling their own compatriots either "Japanese" or "XXXXX" (which is a word that the moderators would sure to delete) :)

Can you say puppy mill? This is a tragedy and in any first world country the owner would be on the hooks for breech of animal welfare laws (you cannot tell me that having 250 dogs in a small hovel is in the animals' best interest).

Here in the twilight zone, however, nothing will be done, as people like this bloke continue to churn out genetically-questionable puppies at a massive rate, and equally gullible consumers buy them. Shame all round!!!

Nationwide sales topped 28.11 billion yen in the two weeks since its release

Don't know if this is a mistake or not. Some of the fast food numbers in this country are amazing. I know an American guy who has his own company (about 5 people) who do half a billion US every year just importing fast food ingredients into this country.

I often dreamt of visiting the UK and glassing a couple of the locals. I guess this new glass will mean that I have to cross the UK off my to visit list (lol).
