The big question is, however, can Elvis in Pyongyang read? Perhaps the President would have been better off giving this assignment to his (younger) daughter. She could have whipped up some snazzy scrawls to get the message across.

The more things change, the more than stay the same.
Could never really understand the US fascination with firearms. Don't get me wrong, I received my first rifle at the age of 8, and then commenced to decimate the local rabbit population. But then again, I grew up on a farm in rural Australia, a place where firearms are tools, used to shot feral animals and fend off undesirables who are after the women folk (that is joke). Anyway, I just don't get it. Indeed, if firearms are so necessary for city folk, etc, is that necessity itself just a symptom of a sick society? Just an idea.

Tiger Woods to take 'indefinite' leave from golf
Let's just hope we don't see him turn up dressed in a black trench coat hassling young women. "Down tiger, down!"

No Japanese whaling ships are allowed into any ports in Australia or New Zealand.
So when did Tasmania leave the Commonwealth, perhaps I am getting mixed up with the Japanese Antartic research ships.
Indeed, thinking about this whole issue and the issue of global warming, perhaps the Southern Hemisphere should close the Antarctic to all Northern Hemisphere countries, and let then choke on their own CO2 omissions.

If Big Kev is so upset by the Japanese carrying out scientific whaling, why doesn't he just shut up shop the next time the Japanese whaling fleet stops at an Australian port for replenishment? Better still, if he believes that Japan is acting in breech of international law, why doesn't he impound the Japanese whaling fleet the next time it calls on an Australian port? That would sure get Tokyo's attention. It would also up the ante.
Come on Kev, get beyond the smoke and mirrors, everybody and his dog knows that your current comments are little more than bluff. There is no way that Australia is going to go toe-to-toe with Japan over the whaling issue, considering Japan's history of linking seemingly diverse foreign policy issues together.

Thanks for the laugh JT. Reading the reference to "a mercenary in Central and South America" reminded me of what an old friend of mine had to say about people like this. The friend in question was an old army buddy whose lack of political correctness ended his career in the army rather sooner than expected. Not being put off, however, my friend went into the protection business (in Columbia). That would have been in the mid-1980s, when his skill set (trained in everything from booby-trapping to assassination) was really popular in the region (he only worked for the good guys, however). Anyway, my friends tells some great stories about wasting about 90% of his time trying not to get people like Mr. Kato here killed, apparently there were lots of cowboys in Central America back in those days. Perhaps this chap was one of them, now selling himself on a resume that is somewhat overstated.

What a wonderful piece of work. Thinking about his hanging around outside railway stations, perhaps the local police could take a leaf out of Japanese history. Namely bury him up to his neck outside one of these railway stations and invite passersby to saw at his neck with a (rather blunt) bamboo saw.

This would be laughable if it was not so serious. Just out of interest, I wonder how far crime statistics would fall if the cops stopped freelancing and committing crime themselves.
With regard to this fine specimen of the law, how reassuring it is to note that he is a leader of 10 other individuals.

Firstly, I should point out that I am politically apathetic, believing that politicians in general are just a small step above the primeval slime. Secondly, I should say that, nevertheless, I am glad that Obama is President, especially when compared to GW, whose Star Trek personification was the Borg, basically a mindless automaton who implemented policy in response to the whinings of the far-right wing of the US political spectrum.
Coming back to Obama, however, I am not a happy camper in terms of the decisions he has made regarding Afghanistan. As a former soldier, although I personally believe that the US should be more aggressive in solving the Afghan problem once and for all, I do recognize that as a leader, Obama is more than entitled to make whatever decision he likes. What upsets me, however, is the time he has taken to make such decisions. Indeed, at a point in time whether decisions are correct or not becomes irrelevant with it becoming more important to act for actions sake. Having sat on his hands for so long, the thing that concerns me now is that US forces on the ground have lost any initiative they might have had. Moreover, this "shall we go or shall we stay" dilemma serious screws with the minds of people. Considering this, I would ask that Obama in the future act promptly, because no matter what you do you cannot please all of the people all of the time.

What's to sell? A decision has been made and orders should be cut. Does it really matter what critics or supporters of this plan think now? Rather than sitting around debating the pros and cons of this policy (which in itself took way too long to develop), the politicians should be shutting up and letting the field commanders get on with their jobs.
God I hate politicians who play at being soldiers.

Talking about the China connection, I don't know how willing the Chinese Communist Party would be with regard to the idea of a convicted druggie targeting Chinese youth with her brand of entertainment. Historically, the communists have been rather touchy about such subjects.

Be the Japan you created after 1945
That would be the Japan that was crafted in the shadow of an indulgent US, a Japan hiding behind Uncle Sam and under Uncle Sam's nuclear umbrella, a Japan with no real foreign policy of its own, other than neo-merchantalism to the detriment of trading partners. Yes, Micheal, I fully agree with you (not).
Then again, Moore might be getting his time-frames mixed up? Perhaps he would like to see the old prewar Japan re-emerge,the Taisho Democracy and all that. Just imagine, political instability, right- wing conspiracies, and a population whose status was that of a modern-day serfdom? What a nirvana!
Although I enjoy Micheal Moore and his shxt-stirring antics as much as the next person (his movies do make for good theater), he should not be taken seriously.

Very reminiscent of the demise in Vietnam. Talk about Vietnamizing the conflict (a fancy way of saying "cutting and running"). The hint of such a policy will give Karzai and his cohorts a severe case of the craps. Why? Because they have about as much legitimacy with the man on the street as professional wrestling. Any arguments based on the premise that Karzai actually runs the country are fundamentally flawed. The current regime in Afghan control only so far as they can project power. The remainder of the country is a twilight zone.
On another note, I am dead against getting out of Afghanistan until such time as the Afghan government starts to show evidence of being able to function as a true governing body (it might take while). Why? Because as it stands, as soon as the US and its allies pull up stumps, Afghanistan will implode, with a resurgent Taliban in the box seat.
Indeed, why all this talk about quitting. The President (Obama) has just made a decision (at last) about what he wants to do. Now it is up to the commanders on the ground to earn their pay and fill those body bags (both with soldiers and insurgents). Despite the sanitized version of the conflict that we see on our TV screens, what is going on in Afghanistan is actually a war, where people will get killed. But hey, it goes with the territory.

Don't know how flimsy the evidence is in this case. If the cops have any brains at all, they will keep an ace in the hole for the trial. Indeed, they must have something if they can convince the prosecutors to go with the murder charge. Given the high profile nature of this case, there is going to be a fair bit of pressure within the government to get a strong result on this. Furthermore, the police/prosecutors needs a conviction to help dispel the image that foreign victims don't get justice in Japan. Anything less than a murder conviction will not sit well with a number of foreign governments, who over the years have criticized the locals for their lack of enthusiasm in tracking down criminals in cases where the victims of crime have been non-Japanese.

A bit of good news on a Monday morning, if this guy did the deed, he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Then again, although I don't buy into conspiracies, it does seem rather convenient that the chap was already in custody for a similar offense. Who knows? A couple of hours down the cells and some grainy ATM footage, and we have a suspect. Hopefully the cops can tie this chap to the crime a little tighter before we all celebrate.
Now lets just hope the cops also make an arrest for the case down in Shimane.
