Yes there are riot police in Japan. These units stretch back to the social upheaval of the 1960s (anti-US/anti Vietnam) and 1970s (people like the Japanese Red Army). At the same time, however, the apathetic attitude of the modern population has meant that the riot squads don't get much hands on practice these days. I would assume they still park in front of certain embassies (as a warning to the right-wing crowd in their black buses), but I don't know what else they do.
With regard to this Shimane case, I hope the "search for clues" headline does not mean that the local plod have reached a dead end. Purely based on the details that have been released to the public (body parts, etc.), it would seem that this case should be No. 1 with a bullet for the police. I really hope that the cops find the nut job that did these heinous acts sooner rather than later. Moreover, any result that ends up with the assailant DOA would draw no criticism from me.

Violence against weaker members of society really pxsses me off at the best of times. While saying this, however, this case and the one of the student down in Shimane really upset me.
What a complete and utter waste of life. These kids (both girls) had their future in front of them, with friends to make, sites to see, and experiences to be had. Now there is nothing. What a complete and utter waste.
Although I often malign the local police (of whom my brother in law is one), I seriously hope that the police get a result in both cases. Only by doing so will the parents of these children gain some form of closer. And only by doing so will other parents of children feel a little bit safer.
RIP.

Don't do this. Giving these clowns a forum from which to lecture us on their perverted views can only cause grief. For one, there are certain elements in the Middle East that would welcome the stimulus that any such diatribes can offer. These folks should be given due process in-camera, and treated accordingly afterward. The other option would be to hand them over to certain Middle East countries after any trial. Why? Because in the eagerness to score brownie points with Washington, Saudi Arabia and Egypt would more than willingly do things that would be considered cruel and unusual here in the west.

With regard to animals, coming from a family that is very heavily involved in the breeding of dogs for social/work purposes (guide dogs, social service dogs, police dogs, etc), and also coming from a family that lives on the land, my attitude towards animal rights is rather diverse.
On one hand, I cannot stomach organizations such as PETA, whose employees have been known to claim animal rights, while at the same time killing unwanted cats and dogs in the back of a van. On the other hand, I don't like the idea of slaughtering animals just for the sake of fashion. Killing for necessity is one thing, whether that necessity is farming or for personal consumption (and I must have knocked over thousands of rabbits as a child), however, killing and torturing animals for the sake of fashion is something totally different.
Indeed, while no friend of PETA, I am very proud to be a paid up member of a number of animal rights organizations, such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Not into PETA and their grandstanding regarding animal rights, at the same time, however, I am not into women who adorn their bodies with bits of dead animals. Such photos are obscene, in much the same way as a photo of this young lass showing her own fur would be obscene.

Couple of points here.
Firstly, if Sarah Palin has the audacity to grandstand at an event with serving members of the military while those persons are in uniform and/or on duty(thus possibly inciting criticism against the person who is their commander in chief under the terms of the Constitution), then she probably does not deserve to be the President herself for a number of legal and ethical reasons.
Secondly, I would agree with the banning of any coverage of such an event if it does turn into a grandstanding exercise, because some clown in the media might be stupid enough to overstep the mark, and report on such an event in terms of uniformed members of the military taking part in political activities. Merely the hint of such actions is definitely contrary to the practice of good order and discipline. Indeed, if she wants to preach to members of the military, Palin (and her supporters) should organize for a facility off base, where member of the military can attend her meetings in civvies on their own time.

The police are obviously in cahoots with Mr. Ichihashi, treating him with kid gloves. If they really want to get a confession out of his (irrespective of whether or not that confession is accurate), they need to take this chap to the mat and start using enhanced interrogation techniques.

Not into this argument at all, basically because it will be corrupted by some countries and used as an excuse to cut down on freedom of expression in their own countries.

Note to the bureaucrats organizing the jury system "make sure all jurors have no 'nads before you impanel them, or otherwise juries might actually start thinking for themselves like this chap"
Boy talk about the wheels falling off, obviously this juror did not get the memo regarding how to behave in court. Specifically, in this jurors are only supposed to nod their heads (preferably in unison) and yield to those in charge (the judge).
Then again, it good to know there are people who can see beyond the pantomime that is the Japanese legal process, where defendants often escape a sentence that is in keeping with their crime, simply because they shed a couple of crocodile tears. Anyway, I hope this juror and his colleagues bang up this rapist for a nice long sentence.

All riders please ride defensively, and assume everyone else on the road is an idiot.
Amen to that advice brother. I worked through a casualty rotation many years ago at a major Australian hospital, some of the injuries I saw really shook me. Please if you are going to ride a motorbike (or bicycle for that matter) take heed of Anthony's advice and assume that everybody else on the road is an idiot.

So despite giving Sakai the boot, her old production agency is still helping this convicted felon with her personal affairs.
This would be the same entity that organized the teary press conference for her after she was charged (despite having terminated her employment).

Pathat - Foreigners winning big in Japan is no big deal. Sumo's greatest start is half-Russian (Taiho), Japanese baseball's greatest home run hitter is Taiwanese (Oh-san), and there are also a number of other "foreign" sports standouts: Victor Starffin (baseball), Isao Harimoto (baseball - Korean by birth).

I don't hate Sarah Palin, I just think that her popularity indicates that there is nothing to the leadership talent pool in the US. It also shows that because she was/is considered a serious candidate the USA has become a joke, a bad joke.
I must say that I fully support this comment. During the last election, whereas Senator McCain always portrayed the image of somebody who had a vision for the country and somebody who would be able to lead (he looked Presidential), on a number of occasions, the image projected by Palin was of somebody who was clearly out of her depth, when discussing issues of policy. I don't know if this was because she was badly briefed, or because she just does not have "it."
Furthermore, when put under pressure, Palin displayed a tendency to become a little bit too folksy for her own good. This in itself is not a problem, with many Presidents (Reagan and LBJ) making their careers by just being "normal guys." However, there was just something about Palin that failed to click with the electorate. Anyway, I hope that the GOP can come up with some serious other options before the next election, because I don't think democracy would be best served by trying to make this souffle rise twice.

I am in two minds as to whether to buy this book or not.
On one hand, I would like to read up on contemporary republican ideas, then again, I gave up browsing through comic strips when I was about 10 years old.

Here we go again, let's list the charges.
One would be breaking and entering. Another might be destruction of property. Obviously the female officer (off duty at the time) was scared in the situation, so you can add in a charge of assault if you consider that the litmus test is that victim feel a sense of fear (as opposed to a charge of assault and battery).
All in all, it would appear that the senior constable has been rather successful, in terms of actions that warrant say 5 to 8 years hard labor. Let's just hope that the prosecutor's pursue this sordid case with its undertones of a deep-seated perversion to the full extent of the law.

The US is a free country and this woman has every right to run for President. At the same time, however, I would like to think that the talent pool on the republican side of US politics was a little bit deeper in terms of coming up with a candidate who would be competitive.

Here we go. We are not even into the World Cup year, and the JFA is already setting the stage by coming up with some rather original excuses for Japan's guaranteed choking on the biggest stage of them all.
The next step of course will be that the JFA will start complaining that other teams are using players who are better endowed with natural talents than the Japanese team.

So to sum up some of the arguments here, the woman in question got what she deserved, by dressing in a manner other than a bed-sheet that covered her from head to foot. Sorry to burst your collective bubble, but such arguments are rather old hat, being widely espoused by great world citizens such as Osama bin Laden. Boy, I wouldn't want to keep that sort of company.
@Kyushujoe - So you have my comments pinned down as a form of satire (a word with which I am somewhat unfamiliar). Sorry buddy, I am not that easily classified. My comments were for real. I fully believe in a zero tolerance policy with regard to those who break the law, any law, whether it be assault, or a lesser crime such as being in possession of an ugly spouse. I have an even poorer opinion of clowns who try to use drunkenness as an excuse. Let's just say this policeman is very lucky that yours truly is not the Minister of Justice here in Japan, because if I was, this chap and his family would be looking at a minimum of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, them being condemned both to a life of scavenging for moldy potatoes and sharing a privy with one Noriko Sakai, a noted drug addict.
