Zero tolerance regarding such incidents. The policeman in question should have been fired immediately after he admitted to this assault. He should also be arraigned on assault charges. If found guilty by due process, he should receive a prison sentence in accordance with the law, also being registered as a sex offender for future reference.
Furthermore, the woman in question should sue this policeman through the civil courts, the aim being to bankrupt him and his direct family, forcing them on the streets. Any and all of his offspring, legitimate or otherwise, should also be made to shoulder the stigma of his actions for life.
Anyway, such actions would only represent the first step in any proceedings against this "policeman." Indeed, the authorities might consider more drastic action.

What about letting the Okinawans (as opposed to the mainland Japanese) make their own decisions regarding such issues. In other words, what about independence for Okinawa from the tyranny of Tokyo.

While I agree with the sentiment of using these pirates as a target for a live fire exercise (I would love to see a Phalanx System adapted for such a purpose), you have to remember that the pirates were not dumb enough to release all their hostages at the one time.
At the same time, however, I am rather taken by the idea of tracking the money, and then turning up with a helicopter load of special forces soldiers early one morning.
Finally, the attraction of money is that you have to be alive to be able to spend it. As such, perhaps the good guys are going about this the wrong way. Maybe they should seek vengeance in a couple of months time, once all the hostages have been released.

If anybody is interested, the autumn leaves up in Hakone around Gora are really good at the moment. Went up there on Sunday to take some photos. However, given the crowds, I would recommend that people try midweek.

Does such ideas just represent poor translations of the original Japanese? The reason I ask this is that considering history, an the Japanese preoccupation with the Great East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere (back in the day), I would have thought any contemporary Japanese leader would avoid using terms such as "fraternity" and "East Asian Community" in the same sentence.

I would refer those who would criticize President Obama to generally-understood diplomatic protocols, protocols that are also observed by the US State Department in its dealings with foreign countries, including those countries that have constitutional monarchs.
Generally speaking, when in the presence of royalty (specifically the reigning monarch), whether it be that of Japan or the United Kingdom or one of the North European countries, a bow (or a curtsy in the case of women) is understood to represent the formal method of greeting such personages. That is just the way it goes folks. Such protocols have been around for hundreds of years, and they will be around for hundreds of years more. Now if those who criticize the President do not understand such practices, you have to wonder about the quality of education that such people received.
At the same time, however, if President Obama could be criticized for anything at all, it would be his shaking hands with His Imperial Highness, such behavior being rather "daring" to say the least.

And just when you think you have heard and seen everything, some monster comes out of the woodwork and does something like this. Unbelievably heinous and totally unfathomable. Moreover, you can bet your bottom dollar that the clown that committed this act is getting his/her jollies every morning reliving the event by reading and hearing about it in the local media.
I also believe that if this person is not caught quickly, there will be a further escalation in their crimes (it is pretty hard to imagine how they could do any worse). Furthermore, I am all in favor of the authorities slotting whoever is responsible for these acts out of hand. Why? Because you just know that such a nutjob would love the attention associated with any trial.
Anyway, RIP the victim. And to the perpetrator the following - Your time will come buddy!!!!

And what about the charges of conduct contrary to good order and discipline?
This guy will be found guilty, but whether he is executed is a whole different can of worms.

This could very much be a case of Japan heading off any US criticism at the pass. With the President in town, followed by the media cavalcade, Japan has probably been worried that having this case on the books might cause some embarrassing questions to be asked. As such, by giving this guy his freedom, Japan can now breath easy, without having to do anything to really address the underlying issues, namely its failure to ratify the Hague Convention, and its failure to hand over a number of Japanese nationals who remain as fugitives from US justice.
At the same time, however, although JT has repeatedly referred to Christopher Savoie as an American, the fact still remains that he at some time reportedly took out Japanese citizenship, and thus under various international conventions should at least be considered as a Japanese national for the purposes of Japanese law while he remains in this country. Moreover, while considering the issue of Japanese law, what is the government going to do with regard to this gentleman's supposed acquiring of Japanese citizenship, while also retaining his US passport (in breach of Japanese law). Have there been any developments on this front?

I killed him and was going to kill myself
Oh yes, that old chestnut. It is funny how these people know off their loved ones only to survive themselves. Sorry dear, you will not get any sympathy from me. Your current financial problems are of your own making, Mrs. Unemployed. Turning around and smothering your child it totally unacceptable.

Please don' read any political meaning into my comments, however, one way or another, the head chap in the White House has to be seen to be making decisions. Sitting on your hands and doing nothing does little for the folks who are out there everyday risking their lives. If Obama wants to quit Afghanistan (a decision I would be against), he needs to act. If he wants to continue a US presence in Afghanistan, he needs to give the commanders the troops and tools they need. For god's sake, the last thing we need are commanders in the field who have a politician looking over their soldier (like happened when GW and Rummy stuffed up the invasion of Iraq). Anyway, Obama needs to act, to allow those who are leading in theater to get on with their jobs.

I will assume that this question is made with regard to US-Japan relations. If that is the case, I would like to talk to President Obama about the need to have Japan sign the Hague Convention regarding the kidnapping of children. Indeed, I would impress on the President the importance of forcing Japan to act on this issue. Moreover, I would suggest that he give Japan a simple and nonnegotiable ultimatum. Either Japn sign the treaty or face the consequences, namely, punitive measures regarding the rights of Japanese nationals to travel to/reside in the United States.

Actually, if you remember the story about the Japanese TV producer who caused a storm in South Africa last year with his drunkenness, lewd remarks and outrageous behavior(remember this is South Africa, a country not know for its shrinking violets), the local population are probably more than happy to have the Japanese football team kept under lock and key.

Saw this on the news the other night. Apparently since bounties have been posted for cooperation in criminal cases, there have been some 36 incidences of tips from the public leading to arrests. Of these 36 cases, in not one case has the committee for deciding who gets the cash actually recommended any payments to people who have given information. Furthermore, this Ichihashi case is the largest in terms of any possible payout, and if money actually leaves police coffers, it will be the first time that it has ever happened. Whoppy Do!!!
As such, I would recommend that the vigilant employees of the ferry terminal hold off on putting down deposits on new motor vehicles, etc, because you never know, the bureaucracy might still find a way to screw these responsible citizens out of their reward, deciding instead to pool any funds for more deserving causes, such as police drinking parties, etc.

Here we go. Some people are going to be dissected for their decisions regarding this guy. I particularly would like to know the military's excuse for putting this guy in his last posting. A chap who has over time radicalized being assigned to work with people coming back from deployments in Muslim countries. As I have said previously, gasoline on a smoldering fire.
Also what about these arguments that the guy wanted out of uniform? Given his poor evaluations, was he such an asset to the army? There are also lots of questions regarding base security? Why is it that the civilian cops had to turn up and shot this guy? What every happened to having an armed response unit down the guard room for incidents just like this? Given the often-used army that the "US is a country at war," why aren't there invasive body checks of people coming on and off base. The weapons that this chap had were not army issue, they got on the base somehow.
Anyway, I can see the finger pointing over this issue is going to go on ad-nauseum, with all the folks who should have known better ducking and weaving like a bunch of boxers.

Another shocking crime committed by a real nut-job, I just hope the police and their canine buddies can find all the outstanding pieces before the local wildlife does.
Moreover, although this girl does not qualify for missing white woman syndrome, I seriously hope that readers possess a similar amount of outrage as has flowed forth over the Hawker case.
Moderator: There is no such thing as "missing white woman syndrome." Please refrain from making such pointless remarks.

Bottom line on this story, Ichihashi-san has been arrested for the alleged murder of Miss Hawker.
Let's get it straight. At the current time this piece of pond life has been arrested on suspicion of abandonment of a body, nothing more, nothing less. Rather, before police got to put him in the frame for this girl's murder, he did a runner. The first thing on the agenda for the fuzz is to tie up the lesser charge of abandonment. While doing so, they will try and get enough evidence to upgrade the charge to murder.

So what about a sentence for this chap folks. According to NHK, the police down in the big O are wasting no time is dragging Mr. Ichihashi back to Chiba to face the music. Given all the hoopla surrounding the case, the plod down in Osaka probably cannot wait to get rid of the chap. Lets just hope he doesn't do a runner when they open the paddy-wagon doors back in Chiba.
Thinking about a sentence, the first thing the cops have to do is put him in the frame for Lindsay's murder. At the moment they only want him for abandonment of a body. Once they get this over and done with, there will be recriminations about him doing the runner, which will probably hurt him when this thing finally gets to trial. Considering the unpredictable nature of the Japanese legal system, it is pretty difficult to imagine what sort of sentence he will get. If he cries and sobs like a fading idol, he might get off with a good behavior bond and his bus fare home. This is imaginable if you consider the lack of worth that has been put on the lives of foreign murder victims in the past in Japan. That chap who strangled the American down in Roppongi only got a good behavior bond. Anything is possible in this country.
On the other hand, Ichihashi might get hung, drawn and quartered just to quench the blood lust of the JT readership. My own prediction is 10 to 12 years on a murder rap, with a career in Japan's entertainment industry afterwards, just like the guy who topped himself in LA last year.
